A tribute to his old school, Gillis's 7th Symphony is a colourful, picturesque, bustling celebration while, at the same time, an idyllic and idealised scene painting in sound. Like many of his orchestral works, with imaginative choreography I'm convinced this would make a wonderful ballet. Though no Texan himself, Wolverhampton-born conductor Ian Hobson would seem to have reached the heart of the composer's largely optimistic and deeply-felt homage.
