I get such a wistful, overwhelming feeling from this. I nearly have tears in my eyes. I don't even know why I stopped to watch it. I guess, in my youth, I found Kuralt and Osgood maudlin and corny. But as I get older, I find these stories closer to the mark of what it means not only to be an American but to be alive, decent, and free.
Still running today with Steve Hartman although in moderated form . Im irish living in Dublin , not anerican but these stories are fantastic now and back then . Thank you for bringing these to use Charles Kuaralt and Steve Hartman .
Another wonderful collection of stories showing the best of Americana - especially the heart warming example of the Chandler family. So many people n today's society could learn a thing or two from them.
Truly love and miss Mr. Kuralt! The last in a long line of newsmen and great storytellers. He always found the best in us. The best in America. I often wonder what it would've been like if he had traveled the world and not just criss-crossed the USA? Would their have been a giant block of cheese from Bolgaria or a pair of dancing grannies from Transylvania in our future from the Road around the World? I'd like to think so. Iconaclayst. God rest his dear soul.
Sometimes the telling of the story is as special as the story itself. Charles Kuralt had a gift of finding the small town and backroads stories of this beautiful time and place in this country. Now (nearly 50 years later) we can still enjoy his great work...a good fix for the eternally nostalgic.
I consider him a father to me who refreshed my belief every Sunday that we live in the best country on earth. He celebrated our differences and was the kindest and noblest man. I really miss him.
I grew up with the sound of this man's voice in my ears and watched his show whenever it came on. I also bought his book and read it from cover to cover. We all felt blessed by these stories as they put us in touch with the rest of our country in a very special way.
Im sitting here today during an extended deployment after quarantine during covid19 in Camp Shields Okinawa. Im "skating" (aka not doing a d*** thing) in the camp librsry reading this books "On the Road" by Charles Kuralt, just loving the America I still believe in, no matter how much bullsh** people want to claim is back at home. Thank you Charles Kuralt and Co. you all are amazing!
This is a representation of the finest of America. Where people cared, and took care of each other. This is what we need now. I'm not saying that this is unheard of now, but this sort of compassion is becoming more scarce, and it's bothersome to me. We need to open our hearts & homes to others who are less fortunate. Charles Kuralt was a wonderful journalist. Steve Hartman has taken up the thread, but Charlie was the master.
Not sure we still aren't that way Wilbur What has REALLY changed is what things our media and tv bring us. prioritizing the sensationalistic and the negative Those of us fortunate to work w the public every day know that generally we are still good Fortunately I'm wise to those games We've been seeing them increase since the 1960s
The problem today is that we receive information overload. It used to be the opinions you heard were from the newspaper, the 3 or 5 television channels and your family, and friends. Now we have a smart phone and we are bombarded with so much information, most of which are opinions, or video clips showing the negative portions of an incidents. I think most people are still kind and caring but that doesn't make for ratings for news channels so we are blasted by the media with messages that are intended to create anxiety, same goes with youtube and tiktok, some times we search for this and just increases our anger. I have stopped watching tiktok and now limit what I watch on youtube.
I agree. I am likely the biggest Paul Frees fan you would ever meet. We probably never hear anyone like that again? Plenty of TH-cam videos in here somewhere featuring him. Once you hear him, you'll say, oh, that guy. :)
I had seen the show with Charles about the gandy dancers and I'll never will forget their songs so when I worked at kwajalein missile range in the 1980s always sing the songs!!!!
Thank you for giving us this wonderful memory. I recognized a couple of the stories, which is what they were...told by one of the great storytellers. I still miss him and his crew...I guess I always will, but it's so good to come to this and to the other videos with Charles Kuralt. It was a different kind of television Back Then, slower, with time to think about what he was showing and telling you. Again, Mr. Williams, thank you for this.
Ive been looking for these but i couldn't find the name of the first host of this show"cbs's ON THE ROAD" With Charles Karult! But now ive find a gold mine with countless list episodes! Btw im an 1985 baby but i grew up watching 📺 on an ol' console TV ahh those were the days! BTW i was raised by my grandparents and they went "GARAGE SALE" Shopping on Saturday mornings, early b4 dawn just to be the first ones there to get first pick ! I got alotta toys like transformers BACK to the FUTURE toys teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"TMNT" ....& COUNTLESS toys i wish i still had! I was BROUGHT up by strict Roman Catholic standards and had to behave at that time my grandparents were in their late sixties and never had real children( gotta say i call them my grandparents because they were the best and closest thing i had to them ) they were my GREAT-Aunt&Uncle! They raise me better than my mom could of ever! Im grateful for the first time they took me in just hours old in 1985 and took me home with them to "Taft texas" i went everywhere they went and i HAD TO GOOD NO MIS-BEHAVING ! .... Also had one other brother but he stayed 24/7 with my mom in CORPUS CHRISTI TX and rarely came on the weekends to stay in taft with my Guardian's only bcus he cried 4 any little thing
22:58- It would be interesting to see where the kids in this story are today, and if they remember going to get a pumpkin from the Venetucci farm. It always was interesting to see where Charles Kuralt’s “On the Road” travels would take him, and us. But it meant something, when that destination was someplace you knew in the backyard, like the Venetucci farm-less than ten or so miles from where I’m typing this. It’s nice to see there is a CBS reporter who has taken up the mantle, and is “On the Road” himself these last years…
Love this! Thank you! He was wonderful! I just would have loved to have been in that rig with him - meeting all those people and seeing all that magnificent countryside! Thanks for sharing.
"And I...had sex with her." Norm Macdonald roasted this dude on SNL and turned out to be right, as Kuralt had a second family in Montana that he hid from his main family. The good ol' days! Americana!
I also love the motorhome that Charles Kuralt rides around in. I'd do the same today if I had an RV like that. Of course, I'd use a computer with email, etc. to talk about my experience driving around the country.
I know this might be a stretch but in 1993 he interviewed my great great great grandmother Lula Watson and I’m not able to find that footage anywhere 😕 could you possibly help??
It's a longshot, but I would contact the Beverly Hills Public Library in Beverly Hills, California. The library is the temporary home of the Paley archives, which has over 160,000 different digitalized clips/shows. It will house these items unitl early 2022 when a new permanent home for them is to be determined. Best of luck!
The last family should be shown today on tv...to prove that if you work hard, you will succeed in America no matter your skin color. But the democratic party doesn't want you to see this type of thing

I grew up watching him bring the world to our tv room… just as inspiring now as it was then ❤️
Bless the algorithm, I had forgotten about this.

Who's Osgood Maudlin?
@@WildChildMcCloud Hilarious!
Then you find out he had two wives and two families living two separate lives and no one knew.

This is real journalism. And that voice.....
Pictures of a long, gone country, to be sure.
Wonderful stuff.

Ride on Charlie. I miss you Sir and this Show. Very good memories of me and Grandpa in front of the television Sunday Morning, 1983 to 1996
It meant al ot to me too. It's always nice to see the original of something so cool they have to make reruns for them.

very true.....and very well said.

I always looked forward to watching him on Sunday mornings.
Something about the voices in the older days of TV, the news anchors, the sports announcers. No one has that now.
I agree.
I am likely the biggest Paul Frees fan you would ever meet.
We probably never hear anyone like that again? Plenty of TH-cam videos in here somewhere featuring him. Once you hear him, you'll say, oh, that guy. :)
Lester Holt
You're so right!
Ty for the upload. I miss this feeling of our 🇺🇸America. Takes me back
What a great man he was!
RIP Charles Kuralt
well remembered in my home. The Sundays were always better with Charles.
Except for his first wife and children. Cheating the whole time he was "on the road." A shame.
CBS Sunday Morning is STILL good..thanks in large part to Charles setting the mold for it.
I don’t think he and his wife had any children. Loved his girlfriends kids like his own.
I just found heaven. Thank you uploader.
I had seen the show with Charles about the gandy dancers and I'll never will forget their songs so when I worked at kwajalein missile range in the 1980s always sing the songs!!!!
i loved this show so much as a kid!
He did his job with heart.Tony
