The song's a classic, the vocals are otherworldly, no more can be said. And while Agnetha is certainly incredibly gorgeous that cute smile from lovely exotic Frida at 00:57 absolutely melted my heart. Thanks for bringing me back some of my 70s.
Absolutely one of the best pop songs of all time. the arrangement is so beautiful from the classical intro and then into the chorus of SOS. By itself that would be enough to still be a great song but when the refrain kicks in of "When your gone" it takes this song to a completely different level. The angelic vocals of Agnetha and Frida are still stunning. I grew up in the 70s and love all the diversity of music we had back then even though I am more a heavy metal fan. Totally agree with Townsend and Lennon, the best pop rock song ever ! At 58 I still vividly remember the first time I heard this song at age 12, in bed listening to a little AM transistor radio late at night, station broadcast out of Chicago ....when the chorus comes crashing in with that wall of sound it just blew me away ! I wonder if anyone realizes the magnificence they're hearing with much of ABBAs music. Incredible singers, classical music infused with rock music, haunting harmonies, soaring harmonies, great rhytms, incredible lilting melodies, wonderful poetry, universal lyrics. Thse dudes went on to write Broadway music scores. Many of their songs don't just start and fade out they have a distinct intro, middle, and end.
