Gives some marvelous indication of all the color we’ve lost in so many of our ancient monuments.

I wonder how much of the stylized arcs were intentional, versus instinctive

Considering this is a work by an artist who spent many years training in some of the most advanced centers of art production and ascended to the most prestigious position an artist could hold, I think it is safe to say, he knew what he was doing. That he did it consciously and with intent. Particularly since it is in keeping, as we say in the video, with mannerist distortion.

The figure would have also had a dynamic interplay with the forms used in the architectural program of the altar. What seems like an exaggerated pose as a single object would have appeared more natural, albeit highly dramatic, in situ.

I really like the museum ambiance added.

It's sad that I immediately thought of selfies, but he looks like some of the dramatically-posed guys I've seen online, lol.
Loved Dr. Zucker's commentary on his mannerist distortions - I might not have noticed his beard in particular. My best guess at who he is... Abraham. It would help if I knew what he was holding.

come on guys you should know this. its St. Jerome he has a stone in his hand. St Jerome identified part of OT book of Daniel chapter 2 that Jesus was the stone not cut by man. Jerome was great thinker and writer of the early christian church hence stone and book. AD 342.

Well, it's not that recognizable, Saint Jerome is mainly depicted as a Cardinal, I didn't know the identification of Saint Jerome with a stone and book.

@@RezaChity-G sorry tend to disagree. a simple google image search shows Jerome mostly as a monk holding a stone. I think he gave up high office to be a hermit. only one image of him in a cardinals hat but also with a stone carved on a wall. see catholic encyclopedia and others. I just thought that if these guys are art "experts" either need to know more or do more research. A lot of the comments on these pages are to "Arty" without any understanding of the subject in the work in question. If you don't know the subject of the work you have lost half the story.

I made the exact same comment about it being Saint Jerome holding a rock before reading any of the other comments. When the narrator said we don't know what he's holding, it seemed to be obvious to anyone with more than a passing interest in Renaissance art that it had to be a rock if the figure was a saint.

The first martyr, St Stephen, is also depicted holding a rock.
