    If you open your gate when the bale almost hits the ground let the gate down and hold it there for a few seconds and it will flat spot the bottom of the bale so it won’t roll unless your on a step grade

    Grazon is just Tordon+2,4 D. The 2,4 D is gone in fairly short order, it breaks down. Problem is it's prone to volatizing and drifting after its applied, which is why it's restricted. The Tordon, however, is very stable and persistent in the environment, so it stays put. Probably the best way to non-chemically control it is to mow frequently and mow LOW... kill them off. If not, second best bet is spot treat, probably with Roundup or something of that sort. Might check some of the newer pasture/hay meadow herbicides like Pasturegard or others... see if they're efficacious on the weeds in question. Have a chat with your local extension agent, take a sample in to him and ask for recommendations on what will kill it. Later! OL J R :)

  • @lukestrawwalker
    @lukestrawwalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see you caught that wad that wrapped around your PTO shaft and cut it off... HOPE that you got it before it grabbed your hydraulic hoses and tore 'em up. Not good. You might think about getting part of an old mudflap or some old baler belting, cut a piece about a foot-n-a-half or two long, and then bolting it to the underside of your drawbar with some fender washers. Cut the corners off the front part of the belt at a 45 degree angle on the leading end, so hay can't catch on it. It should extend far enough back to cover the end of the hitch pin. The belt will be pushed up by the wad of hay coming under the tractor and slide right under the drawbar pin, preventing it from building up a wad that can wrap around the PTO, or break loose as a big wad that can plug the baler, etc. Later! OL J R :)

  • @lukestrawwalker
    @lukestrawwalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That baler DOES make nice bales, that's for sure... what's the biggest it will make?? 4x5, 4x5.5, 4x6? I know the bigger you make a 4 foot wide bale, the "tippier" they get and want to flip over... trying to pick them up with a spear or even forks is, as I've heard some folks say, "like trying to pick up a nickel standing on edge"... they want to flip off and fall over. BUT a 4x4 bale is kinda on the small side, particularly for hauling distances. We have 5 foot wide baler that will make up to a 5x6, but those get AWFUL heavy and so I usually try to keep them in the 5x5-5x5.5 foot range so they're easier to handle. I wouldn't be opposed to going to a 4 foot wide baler if the price was right, and if I could make at least a 4x5 bale, maybe a 5.5 diameter. Just wondering how you like the baler so far... OL J R :)

    A lot of the issues with starting a bale (or difficulty so doing) is WEAR... if the baler's starter mechanism is worn, it's gonna have trouble starting a bale. On the Deere balers, they rely on the diamond tread of the belts to grab the hay, pull it up into the belt coming back down from the top roller, and the downward moving belt grabbing the hay coming up, pushing it down into the incoming hay, and presto!-- a rotating bale core. Only if the belts are worn, then the hay SLIPS and doesn't do that, and you get a WAD of non-moving hay which can plug the pickup. Hesston balers use the same principle to get a bale rolling. Vermeer balers using a starting roll with rubber flaps on the older balers, and if that gets work or the flaps too limber or floppy from age and wear, they won't start a bale. I had the school bus mechanic hire me one time to come over with my Ford round baler to bale his overly-dry ryegrass hay, which means it was EXTRA slippery, because his old Vermeer wouldn't start a bale in it but about every 10-15 tries, the rest of the time he had a wad plugging it up to deal with. I rolled it up no problem, did the whole job in an hour or two! Newer Vermeer balers use rubber mounted pickup teeth to "ram" the hay into the chamber and get the bale core rolling, which works fine-- til the rubber starts getting too limber or floppy after a couple years of baling and then they start balking at starting a bale in tough conditions. SO you get to go spend nearly a grand on new rubber pickup teeth, and put them in.
    On your New Holland there, I bet the missing windguard is what's causing it to have more trouble starting a bale... you'd be surprised what those fingers hold the hay down against the pickup, which gives the pickup teeth more "traction" to shove the hay back into the chamber... even though the pickup teeth rotate down before it gets there, the hay coming in behind it helps push the hay already past the pickup teeth back into the chamber, just enough to really help get the bale core rolling in there. Without it, hay can "flop over" the pickup teeth and pile up, rather than getting shoved back into the chamber where the floor chains or roller can grab it and get it moving back in there. Doesn't mean it'll happen all the time-- conditions of the hay, being a little heavier or longer or whatever, can make a BIG difference in how it feeds, BUT in *tough conditions* is where you'll really start seeing problems. Might think about fixing that thing and putting it back. Later! OL J R :)

    Round baling at 3 mph feels fast?? LOL:) I round bale at SIX mph-- sixth gear and 1800 rpms on the old Ford 552 and 5610S... I couldn't imagine having to round bale THAT slow... in windrows heavier than that I *might* drop down to fifth gear, 5 mph, just so i don't overload the pickup and cause a plug. Otherwise, the faster I feed it the better it bales. Later! OL J R :)
