I've been excited about this game for a while. It looks very interesting and I would very much like to play it, but there's no way I can justify paying $300.
I get that, but it really is a pretty spectacular game. I'm expecting that there will be some groups of players that pitch in together to order a copy to play. Plus, it will be cheaper during the Kickstarter.

If it is good…it is worth it.
Also you basically need to have a player for every nation. In Axis & Allies, it works just as well, maybe better as a 2 player game, but Larry Harris's designs have been obsessed with planned movement lately so no candy for anyone without a large friend group.
@@didelphidae5228 - This game can be played with 2 players. It just takes out most of the diplomatic side. Various powers are aligned and you go to war. At least, that is my understanding at this point.
Missed the Kickstarter for this but hope to play it next year. Looking forward to playing what seems like a cross between Axis and Allies and Diplomacy to an extent.

I once worked on a version of this setting for huge management role playing games. There we had smaller nobles who could grow their power by changing sides in a smart way. I wonder if this aspect is present, could be made present too?

Sounds promising. Free for all and alliance options should make the game have good replayability. And similtanious actions means no/little downtime for everyone.

On the edge on if I wanna pledge or not. My friend group would love to play this. But, we are all over the country now. Idk when Id get to play. A $50-$100 game I can justify and let it collect dust. Still stings a wee bit. A $300 game… eh. I don’t know. I may see what stretch goals are reached and see what bonuses there are before making my final decision. I’ll probably get it during the kick starter or not at all.

I read through the rules and combat seems to me too complex. But would a whole combat equal in time with War Room? But 300$ is too much anyways..
To each their own, but I didn't think it was any more complicated than Axis and Allies (subs, destroyer, bombing raids, etc). Plus, this game comes with really useful player aids. Still, if you get a chance to play this game, I highly recommend it.

I had the exact opposite reaction.
Harris makes beer & pretzels games and long doesn't mean complex, it's a beautiful looking game, but the history is terrible. I at least want my games to represent 'could have beens' not a superficial facade of a historical situation without bearing on reality as this looks to be.
But then, I feel like A&A is too light in terms of complexity, and lacking in historical realism (again you can't make up for this through sheer size/playtime) something to play as a teenager when one doesn't know better. At least, that's how I felt about the game. Plenty of fond memories from then, but it's just not enough of a simulation for my tastes these days. I'd rather play Pacific War or Der Weltkrieg if I want a massive game to simulate a war. Obviously if others can derive enjoyment from the lighter (if large) games such as Harris makes, I'm happy for them, I wish I still could, but they're not for me. But to say they're 'too complex' (though I grant, you said that only about combat) is something I definitely cannot relate to.

Have you actually played it?..
I read through the rules, setup the game, and move the pieces around in a way that I thought was in line with the rules. However, what they sent me was a prototype and they needed it sent on to the next reviewer asap. I know people that have played it in full and their reviews are unanimously positive.
We are definitely looking forward to seeing the game on our table.
It looks great but just like War Room, it's just too freaking big for the table ...and I do have a gaming table.
I know just what you mean. I have the same problem. I had to push two of my biggest tables together to shoot this video. When I asked Nightingale Games about it, they said that if the big is successful enough they might build a smaller version. So, fingers crossed.

Why do you hate yourself? Risk is a TERRIBLE game. It's bad as a game, it's just effing atrocious as a wargame.

Oh, look, another way too big wargame.
The title invoked the potential for a negotiation game where players take the role of negotiators at the Congress of Vienna (you know, a novel concept), but apparently we're skipping straight past that and it's just a wargame again.

This game in my opinion would have been better set during Napoleon’s reign where one can take the command of the French Emperor’s armies or The Duke of Wellington’s, or one or more of the coalition armies. Set after the defeat of one of the greatest military commanders of the 18th and 19th century really takes the air out the game as the diverts from the Napoleonic history and goes alt history. That being said it seems to be a nice looking game and the pieces could be used in historical miniatures or other games similar like Eagle Games’ Napoleon in Europe which really continues to hold its own as a great Napoleonic game. As much as it pains me as I love the Napoleonic Period I will have to pass as I don’t like alt history games.
It might be interesting to use this game with an alternative setup and narrative. Maybe the one you described.

Note that a 2 player game of Imperial Borders is entirely possible (even preferable to some)....this removes any backstabbing entirely... only front-stabbing! it becomes more chess-like in the anticipation of enemy movements.
