    I use a Phenom II X6 1090T BE until today, since 2010, and it continues to run all I need with good performance. The only thing I couldn’t run with this processor is the PS3 emulator. It’s a very good processor. I’m a fan of Phenom II because it has a very good longevity. I wish to upgrade to some 7nm Ryzen in the future.

      Congrats, man. It's always good to see someone sticking with their hardware until it's truly too slow for normal use. You will probably be able to get a 16 core Ryzen 3000 CPU for $400 or something and use that thing for another 10 years.

      Pistigrilo I couldn't agree more my friend, the 6 core Phenom CPUs are still great options on a tight budget. It's actually what I used to build the PC that introduced my other half to PC gaming, the 1055t specifically. She would still be running it without issue if not for the lack of SSE4.1 support for Dead Rising 4, so I have since given her my old Haswell platform.

    The silicon wafer was exposed in the Texas fab and the chip was assembled at the Penang ATMP (Assembly Test Mark & Pack) facility.

      While AMD had a Fab in Texas (Fab 25), I'm pretty sure that one got spun off to Spansion and only did Flash since the mid 2000s. After that all AMD production went to Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany - the "Diffused in Germany" stems from there. Of course, in 2012 AMD had no fabs at all, and AMD's Fab 30 had since become Fab 1 of GlobalFoundries, which produces stuff down to 28nm (up to AMD's Excavator based Bristol Ridge). Nowadays, AMD's Zen-based CPUs are produced in GlobalFoundries Fab 2 (Malta, New York), tested in Dresden and assembled in China.

      The first PC I ever tinkered with was a socket A machine. Took it from a Duron 1.2 ghz with a tiny amount of SD RAM to an athlon XP 2000+ with 1GB of DDR1. I was so proud of myself :-)

      @uK8cvPAq 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah yes RAM upgrades were actually something to get excited about in those days, especially when Windows XP came out and we suddenly realized that our 256mb of SD RAM wasn't going to cut it. You still got that machine?

    • @beetooex
      @beetooex 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@uK8cvPAq I finally scrapped it earlier this year with a house move. I'd robbed the RAM sticks a year previously to upgrade a skt 754 PC that was going to Africa. I did a whole pallet of machines for the charity and it seemed like a worthy cause.
      Before that it was a dedicated HDD formatting and partitioning station for my various projects. It sat for years with all the sides off and a Linux boot disk in the optical drive. Once I didn't need to play with IDE drives it became truly redundant.
      It was a bit sad but I don't get time for hobbies anymore.

      Did you miss the dual and quad core CPUs by Intel and AMD? By the time triple cores came out, a few years later, multi-cores including quad cores had been around for a while and it was clear that the extra cores were beneficial.

    Next video about core unlocking.
    Also you really dont need to up the multiplier with phenom II cpu's, all you need to do is bumb the BCLK to 250mhz and make sure other components run at stocks speeds while the cpu is 3.8 - 4ghz or higher.
    stock voltages should suffice nicely.
    Why 250mhz? Well the phenoms benefit greatly of the faster bus speeds, and with 250 all the multipliers "sync" so that you can still achieve stock speeds for ram, chipset etc

    • @cybercat1531
      @cybercat1531 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is true. Both Phenom and Core 2 benefit greatly from increased Bus speed.

      Phenom II also get performance boosts from overclocking memory subsystem. Minimum 1600Mhz on RAM and 2600Mhz on NB. Really good performance reached when ram is 2000Mhz and NB is 3000mhz.

  • @Aaronage1
    @Aaronage1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    AM3 was a great platform, had a lot of fun tinkering with it. It deserves more love, IMO :-)
    The best AM3 chip I have is a 2.3GHz Athlon X2 5200+. Despite sharing a name with an older K8 Athlon, the AM3 5200+ is a 45nm dual-core built from a harvested C3 Deneb die. I was super lucky as the one I have unlocks to a full quad-core with L3 cache and has no issues with high overclocks.
    After unlocking/overclocking it went from:
    Athlon X2 5200+ 2.3GHz, 2C, no L3
    to:
    Phenom FX 5200 3.75GHz, 4C, 6MB L3, 2800MHz HT/IMC
    The great thing about AM3/Phenom II is that you don't really need an unlocked multiplier if you have the right board. The 5200+ had a locked multiplier of 11.5 but it wasn't a problem - good boards would allow up to ~330 reference clock. 326 * 11.5 = 3749MHz :D
    That chip is rock solid, too. I had that thing running folding@home at 3.75GHz for the best part of year with no instability.

If the 4th core worked you had a quad core for the price of a triple. There were some issues, though, like increased power draw and sometimes the 4th core just didn't work. Cheers!

      Awesome, these tri core chips make fantastic daily use machines, and with a low resource OS like Mint with the Mate or XFCE edition, and they even run fine on a board with DDR2 ram, just make sure it's 8GB of 800Mhz DDR2 for the best performance, and pair it with a GPU like a low power AMD R7 240 2GB which can be had for really cheap these days. In fact on Mint Mate or XFCE you can still game fairly well with a lot of titles in STEAM with STEAM Play turned on. Granted Mint Mate/XFCE both take a bit of setting up with the compositor going from Compiz which is the default of Compton for no screen tearing, and installing Ukuu for the latest Linux Kernels for better open source AMD GPU drivers. Last I should mention Mint 19 is an LTS release with support threw 2023.

    The best thing about AM3 is that it is so versatile - there's a wide range of CPUs for the socket and many chipsets (some even from nVidia!). I remember upgrading from an Athlon II X4 635 to an i5 4460 and not feeling like I got a good deal, at least at the time. It also gave me my first experiences of building a PC, when I upgraded the system's graphics card and had to transplant it to a new case and power supply just so it would fit.

It was a total gem of a chip, unlocking to a Phenom II X4 B55 *and* would overclock while unlocked to around 3.8GHz, so certainly a nice performance boost from factory. The only downside was the CPU thermal sensor behaved kinda odd when unlocked, reading ~30C higher than reality (the motherboard's socket sensor confirmed this). Threw them all in my car and found all but two had a bad PSU and all of them had Phenom II x3 b73 processors. They had stupid proprietary mobos so I bought an AM3 mobo to mess with them. I don't remember numbers, but the vast majority I was able to unlock the 4th core, some even overclocked decently, and some didn't even have their worst core disabled! I sold off all the parts on Craigslist except the best one, which I ended up trading for a X4 970 that a guy got for a build not realizing that his mobo only supports up to 95W. Who would've thought that a defect in one of 4 cores in a package would span its own line-up and inspire a midrange CPU line-up that continues to this day with hexa-core Ryzens and 12/24-core ThreadRippers? (Phenom X3 -> Phenom II X3 -> FX 6xxx - > Ryzen 5 x600/ThreadRipper x920).
    One thing to say about the Business-class Phenom IIs, is that nearly all of them have healthy locked cores. In order to provide maximum stability in corporate environments and to have enough stock in the lower-tier chips, B Phenoms are almost always perfect Deneb dies with locked cores, so they unlock perfectly. I unlocked many B53s and B55s from X2 to X4 with 100% success.
    So yeah, Phil, try it out, besides, between unlocking and overclocking, Phenom II is fun, and I think it was the very last time we had that level of tinkering in a desktop platform. (Which is one of the reasons why all in all, up until Zen, Phenom II was for me the very best AMD had ever offered)

There were tons of processors back in the day that were just literally the same, but with different cores disabled or clocks changed. Occasionally there were even hacks / tricks you could do to get those cores or speed back!

      Hex core Ryzen is probably a binned part, but the different core count threadripper parts are not.
      Threadripper is a McM (multi chip module) with multiple CPU dies. The number of cores will directly determine the number of dies on the package.

      GGigabiteM I never implied Bulldozer and Zen featured defective dies, in fact, AMD’s solution for die harvesting in the Phenom era was to envision a modular architecture, which is why you can’t unlock anything on FX and Ryzen/ThreadRipper chips.
      What I implied is that the existence of the Triple-Core Phenoms was a good business opportunity for AMD, as it gave them leeway to offer a mid-range model in the Phenom, which evolved into a mid-range offer into FX and Zen-based chips.

    I am still running AM3 here. One thing to look for is the VRMs on the Board, if you think about upgrading the CPU later. I had a borad rated for 125W, but when i actually put a FX-8350 in there, under load it kept throtteling like hell. Now i have a decent ASrock board rated for 220W, and my CPU runs super stable even when overclocked. That Board is a ASRock 970A-G/3.1, it has a modern UEFI BIOS, M.2 Slot and even USB Type C onboard.
    Together with 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a RX580, i have yet to come across a game that will not run properly.

      @TSteffi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@polentusmax6100 True, i had to put a fan next to the VRMs in order to keep it running with the FX8350. The board i have now, and mentioned above, handles the 8-core just fine with nothing but the case fans. And that is with an AiO watercooler.

      @Lolled9991 they dont, you never use a 9 series fx , and if you oc a 8 core fx you never give too much voltage in those boards. fx9590 is a scam. You can have a reasonable overclocked fx 83xx to 150/170 watts performing close to that. The 9 series have too much voltage.

    • @TSteffi
      @TSteffi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Lolled9991 Uhm, the chipset has nothing to do with the TDP whatsoever. How much W it supports depends only on the VRM.

This Phenom II video reminded me of two mainboards: Asrock ALiveDual-eSATA2 and Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA. Both are for socket AM2+ which means you can use overclockable Phenom II CPUs as well as DDR2 (so you are not limited to a maximum of 2 GB of RAM). I was very happy with the 955 until World of Warcraft Mists of Pandaria came along.... an Intel CPU was basically required :(

    TBH I didn't like crysis, it start's off like far cry 1 then after the jungle it goes all alien. Not my fav game.
    I like the AM2+ platform and AM3. Which video card did you use with this setup? Awesome video mate.

    My "business" computer had the similar a CPU to this but quad core, possibly the "not cut down" version, but it ran at 2.3ghz i believe. It was just bearable on Windows 7 and some games like cs-go. But maybe the HD 5450 was the biggest problem, but the CPU was always at 100% while in game or watching a video so it was not fun.

    i have a phenom 1050t black edition with a faulty core on it. i don't know how it passed the quality control lmao. but the 6th core would crap the bed and crash. even windows would report it crashing and it would shut it off. so i pretty much call it a 5 core but i don't use it anymore but i kept the core for a novelty purpose and just bought a new 1050t at that time i thought it was funny.

    I wouldn't exactly call Am3 tripple core an competitor to 775 since it came out much later then 775 lol! There's a few issues with it as well, tripple core cpu's weren't much more powerful then their dual core cousin's because everything was turned down on them, the only benefit was that extra core. Depending on the motherboard/ cpu 775 can support from 8 to 32gb of ram, 775 in it's early days with DDR2 had a cap of 16gb depending on the processor, in it's DDR3 days towards the end of it's life the boards could support 32gb depending on what latest cpu's were out. Usb 3.0 came out in the early days of 1st gen "i" series processors.

      @@philscomputerlab Compared to a quad core they had lower specs, just above what a dual core Amd cpu has for cache', etc. So the only real advantage they had was the extra core gave them better multiprocessing performance like you stated and higher clock speeds. I had a Triple core laptop for a while and it was ok, the only issue was how hot it got, overheated even when properly cleaned and had new thermal compound which could have been due to the 3ghz clock speeds.

    I just picked up a Phenom II X4. I didn't get the X6 because the 4core can be clocked higher because they run cooler than the X6, for better single and dual core IPC performance on era appropriate games.

      @@philscomputerlab The 965 Black Edition in the later C3 stepping. Used, complete in box with oem cooler. From my understanding any of these Denebs from 955 up are equally adept at overclocking. Same with the Thuban Hexa 6 cores...the 1055T can overclock as good as the 1090T/1100T. I have an Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX board. I also just recieved from Newegg a brand new AMD FX 8350 for $64. Im looking to pick up a couple more mobos for the AM3 platform.

      @@philscomputerlab The vast majority of the time the Triple Core Phenom IIs should equal the performance of the Quad Core Phenom IIs in gaming. What was the pricing difference back in the day between the Triples, Quads and Hexa core Phenom IIs? The intel Core 2 Quads like the Q9650 were quite a bit faster in IPC than these AMD Phenom IIs.

    years ago I unlocked an AMD x3 425 into AMD x4 b25 stable at 2.9. AMD never sold B25. but B25 is what CPU-z / windows would label the cpu.

    It's sad only reason Phenom II series will be obsolete is they don't have SSE4 or AVX since some game engines seem to natively start to support those ISA since a while.
