When I learned to make lye soap from my grandmother in the 70s, we used a huge cast iron pot, melted the lard over an open fire, poured in the lye, and cooked for some time. The hard part was pouring it into the cheese cloth lined wooden crate. That stuff could take a stain out of anything. I also learned how to make lye from wood ash. We sold it at the Yesteryear Fair in Decatur, IL for the historical society. My great-grandmother tried to make soap in her basement around that time, when no one was there, and the lye ate through her aluminum pot, coating the basement floor in soap. Great-grandma was born in 1888 and had quite a personality.

Oh! I love this video! My Grandmother Tracy made lye-soap using collected bacon grease - a necessity since she lived through the Depression. Her homemade soap was used in the kitchen sink for dishes, in the washing machine for clothes, and in the bathtub for dirty bodies. One of my most precious memories is sleeping between her deliciously clean and pure smelling sheets that were washed with her lye-soap and dried in the sunshine! My soul was filled with delicious joy as so many memories flooded my heart and mind! I am determined to order supplies and start making my own soap too. Thank you again, Mary Yoder, for your delightful video!!!!

My grandma also made soap .She raised 12 children during the depression. She also used the grease from her home made pork rinds . Goodness I wish I had some now. They were so good. We loved sleeping over and her sheets were so crisp and white. And smelt so fresh. Oh how I miss those days.

@@lauraleederos5850 Thanks for sharing your precious memories of your grandmother too. Grandmother Tracy would have huge containers of her homemade soap in her store-room - - - I would give my eye-teeth to be able to walk in there and pull out a few bars to use here at my house!!! Mary Yoder is our inspiration to make our own!

Although I have no interest in soap making I found myself enjoying this video. One reason this is my favorite channel is that Mary has so many interests and skills that she shares with us........there's something for everyone, and always something to learn. Mary is a "modern old fashioned woman" and her joy in life is a testament to her faith in Jesus.

So fun to watch you make soap! I’ve been making my own cold process soap for years and never tire of it. I think you said you thought a glass bowl could be used when mixing the lye. No! I tried that right at the beginning with a Pyrex bowl. The temperature shoots up so fast when the lye is added that the glass shatters! ❤

What a wonderful episode! I’m very intimidated by soap making but you, my sweet lady, are courageous! Your soaps are beautiful and I bet they smell amazing! Would you ever have thought that you’d be dabbling in so many fabulous crafts??? John’s shelf is beautiful. What a great craftsman he is. Loved seeing the new shop! My mouth dropped open seeing all that gorgeous fabric! I know that people are gonna keep you busy in soap making! Your cottage guests will feel so spoiled! The Air B and B’s that I clean leave handmade goat’s milk soaps out for their guests. People appreciate such special touches like that! I wish you guys all the best!!! 🌼🫶🏻🙌🏻💗😊🧼

Great job! 👏🇨🇦

Good morning Mary. Loved watching this and I will be ordering the Rose and Peony when it is available. The little oval soaps are adorable and perfect for your cottages. I was wondering if you have thought about offering these in a few different scents as a bundle on your shop. That way, your customers could actually smell them before they bought the full sized bar. I always get excited when you have posted a new video. Just love your creativity.

I’m always amazed at the quantities of products you can buy in the US. Usually, the largest quantity of a product here in Australia e.g. oils, is only 1 litre/33.8 ounces. It’s quite frustrating when wanting to make soap, candles, face creams etc to have to buy small bottles, which are also very expensive. I always hope that my recipes turn out well so as not to waste time and money. I love your channel and the inspiration it brings me. ❤

That was very interesting! I ordered one of your soaps about a month or so ago. I don’t remember what scent it was but it was a green color. I can’t smell any scent from it at all but I love how clean it makes my hands feel! I have asked my husband to use that soap so that he can get his hands real clean. (LOL)

Thanks Mary for sharing. Your soap looks gorgeous. I will just have to imagine what it smells like. I think it’s just a bit too far from your place to mine for me to place an order. We are going into winter here in New Zealand. It is lovely to hear the birds in your video and see the beautiful sunny views. Thanks again and God bless. Lynda

Always enjoy your video's, love your kind nature and soothing voice. This was a fun video, which made me realize how much work and also a little scary to make soap. I'm sure it becomes a little more easy the more you make it. As you cut thru the rose and peonies loaf and saw the swirls at the bottom, I thought how much it looked like the ocean waves. Maybe you could do an ocean scent and color blue!

This is so helpful! I’m recently reading about palm oil being in tons of products we buy, which contributes to deforestation and destroying habitats of orangutans and that has led me to wanting to make my own soap. I also have autoimmune issues and some allergies to store bought soaps. Your video is so helpful and I’m glad you took the time to film this and explain the process :)

This video was the kick-off point for me in my soap making journey. I used your recipe and took your advice to do the research. Like you, I became a bit "obsessed " but I'm glad I took it seriously. The investment was not insignificant and I've now got around 12 batches on the curing racks, each batch- so far- has been successful and I learn something new with each one. Thank you so much for the inspiration you provide on so many levels. Your love of nature, your eye for beauty, love of family and a humble spirit - all these are compelling reasons why I look forward to your weekly videos. Thank you for sharing your life with all of us!

Hi Yvonne, I was rewatching Mary’s video on soap making and read your comment on making her recipe. I have tried to find it but to no avail! Would you mind sharing it with me? Thanks so much.

@@islandgirl100able Just below the video where you see the small picture of Mary you will see in large letters ADDIE"S ADDRESS and just below that is says SHOW MORE. Click there and you will find the recipe - just keep scrolling. She gives the exact amounts of everything to make a double batch or a single batch. If you are relatively new at making soap I highly recommend the single batch as it is a much easier amount of batter to manage when you get to "trace" and things start to thicken FAST.

@@yvonnegillan3004 Thank you so much Yvonne, I found it! I have been a soap maker for over 25 years and I love my recipe but it uses Crisco and I’m trying to go all organic so I need a new formula. Mary always does everything so well doesn’t she! Now I have to see if I can find organic shea butter. Thanks again for your help.

Mary, once one starts making soap one is rather inclined to become obsessive about it 😉😉. Welcome to that Club 😊😊 Just a wee note - stainless steel or appropriately numbered chemical resistant polyethylene plastic (i.e. nos 2 & 5) are the ideal vessels for Lye concocting. Glass is better left alone as the lye can etch into it, and at some stage cause the glass to implode. Glass is fine for mixing it into the oils albeit preferably a heat resistant, heavy duty version. 💜

Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us and your recipe. I took a cold process soap class earlier this month but the instructor was talking so fast it was hard keeping up and she did not share her recipe so I had no idea how much of anything to make the soap. Loved your presentation and how easy you made the process. Thanks again and hope to see more of your videos.💕🤗
