(Editor/producer Zaiem) Okay I'm going to be completely honest here, I didn't really expect anyone to see this video. This is something we started trying out a couple of months ago, and this is our 17th video. The first 16 averaged about 250 views apiece. This one is currently at 12k so this is a little unexpected. 😳This is an experiment -- I didn't see anyone doing any content like this in hockey. I got to know Allyson during training camp this year covering the team, and I was blown away by her hockey IQ talking to her. And I had this idea of doing these video breakdowns to bring her words to life.
But I don't have any video editing experience, so it's been the approach of "make a bunch of videos, accept they're going to be bad at first, try to improve at least one thing each time, then after 100 videos see where you are." So I've been trying different titles, different thumbnail strategies, different editing/pacing, just seeing what does and does not work. And so much studying the TH-cam algorithm.
Our goal here is to educate people. I'm a longtime hockey fan and did some work in Avalanche broadcasting during the Roy/Sakic/Forsberg era before moving to Seattle, and when we got an NHL team, I was over the moon about it. The Kraken fanbase is a good mix of people like me who love hockey but we just never had an NHL team here and people who have discovered the great sport of hockey and have fallen in love with it.
When Vox Media/SBNation said they didn't want to do hockey websites anymore last spring, we were given the chance to take ownership of it and make it our own, and that's what we did. We were contracted writers writing for DJLR under Vox Media and are now fully independent, but the Kraken still grant us press credentials.
We just want people to enjoy hockey more and understand it better. It's a balance of quality versus speed. I would have loved to have talked about the disallowed goal or the brouhaha at the end of the game, but at this point every goal is half an hour of work for each of us, so a 4-2 game is already three hours, and we want these up by the morning. (It used to take a lot longer when we were completely inexperienced. Now we're 17 videos experienced. That's not nothing.) It's a pretty intense turnaround, and I want to make sure we don't burn out. (We also do written coverage for DavyJonesLockerRoom.com -- Allyson's written work is also unsurprisingly excellent, as is the rest of our writers if I say so myself.)
I tried to do a little Edmonton shoutout by using the instrumental for Edmonton-born KD Lang's "Constant Craving" for the intro -- and the main music being the instrumental for "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil. TH-cam is cool with using copyrighted music, you just can't monetize the video. But we are nowhere near monetization, so might as well have some fun with it.
The thumbnail references a movie about oil -- and the Yanni Gourde bleeding seemed perfect, although I didn't consider that it was a key moment in the game and wasn't included, so that's bad on my part. It bugs me when other people do that and now I've become everything I hate.
Thank you for everyone who left a comment and enjoyed the video. We are just flabbergasted by the response to this. There have been a lot of long nights wondering if there was any point to doing all this and it's so wonderful to know that so many people appreciated it. We aren't shouting into the void after all!

The most likely reason for the increased viewership is the winning streak by the Oilers and the Kraken giving them a run for their money, getting two early goals put a scare in the Oilers fans, but as of late they are determined to win. I did make a comment on this analysis about a couple of let’s just say “embellishments” on goals, with lots of feedback from other viewers, but thats all good imo. As for subscribing to the channel I’m on the fence at this point. If the Oilers win or lose I will check back again after March 2nd game and decide then. Let’s Go Oilers 🏆

My only real experience with Hockey is going to a Blackhawks game with my dad once when I was like 9ish. This video helped me feel smart and like I understood what was going on. Explaining why a play worked with visual support, and then showing the play at full speed is a nice QED.
      Love everything happening here.
      Two notes:
      1) the montage in the opener switched images so quickly it felt a little jarring. Never quite got to settle into what was happening and then it changed again.
      2) I felt impatient every time the Davey Jones Locker logo transition happened. I wanted more content *now*! ;p

Good breakdown analysis of the game. Keep up the good work.
Although you did use the thumbnail of Yanni Gourde's bloody face, you forgot to describe how his selfish 5-minute major with 4 minutes left negated any chance of a pull-the-goalie 6-on-5 tying goal. He may have been upset with not getting a call in his jousting with McDavid, but by jumping and launching his 5'9" frame into the face of the 6'4" Ekholm, he ensured a regulation loss for the Kraken. A talented feisty player loses his composure staking his team to 0 points for the game.

    • @DavyJonesLR
      @DavyJonesLR  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

(Editor Zaiem) That wasn't really intentional. It's just how our workflow was. The game ended and then our thumbnail designer started on the thumbnail not knowing what Allyson was going to talk about. It takes a couple of hours of work for Allyson to get the right take and figure out what she's going to say and how to say it. Jolie, the thumbnail designer, has to work in the morning so she just goes off and does her thing and we've found that a funny expression on a player's face tends to do well, and that was easily the most memorable expression on a face, so you throw in a pop culture reference and she sent it off.
In this case the expression did have to do with a specific incident in the game, but I didn't even think about that and how that could be misleading. Misleading thumbnails bug me too, and now here I am (accidentally) becoming everything I hate. It's just a product of being in scramble mode pretty much from the the time the game begins to the time that the video is finished and I've hit publish on TH-cam 8 hours later.

I really dislike how the Oil gets behind and them able to come back. If they make the playoffs and meet a very good defensive team, that might no work. So why get behind in the first place?

I’m an Oilers fan, and didn’t have much hope of them making the playoffs after the terrible start, but stuck with them regardless, as for coming from behind they’ve done it to some pretty good teams, a few reasons why, Skinner is playing better and the forwards coming back faster helping the defence, and new coaching. But hey, the Kraken are a team of the future, not to many teams with over 22 million in cap space are playing as good as them lately.

(Zaiem the editor here) It's an issue of time management. Game ends, then Allyson spends a while recording and getting the right take, then she sends it to me and I put the video together. Every goal is about an hour of work between the two of us. So when it's 6 goals, that's already a lot of time and we're trying to get these turned around and posted before the morning.
If these weren't so time-sensitive, we would do a lot more with them. I'd love to do 15-20 minute breakdowns with interesting plays. Sometimes we do that for like 2-0 games where there isn't a lot of content, although we haven't been doing this for very long. This is our 17th breakdown video.
Basically we are still in the "try different things and see what works" phase. Keep creating content and try to improve at least one thing each time, and see where you are after 100 videos. This is the first video to kind of blow up (12k views versus like 250 lol) and I'm flabbergasted by the response. Like completely blown away.
So we just do road games (home games are too tough -- both Allyson and I cover the games for the website of the same name as this channel, games end at 10, then we do postgame interviews, and don't get home until midnight -- then doing a video AFTER that is just asdfadfaaa we tried that a couple of times and were dead) and we only do the goals for the most part.
If the process wasn't so time-consuming, we would do a LOT more. Like a LOT LOT more. This stuff is so much fun and we're pretty passionate about hockey and helping people learn the game better.
