- Savotta Jääkäri XL - the finnish rucksack with mystical reputation that mixes together old school with modern day that many are familiar with for reading about it online or even seen it somewhere but what does it really offer for the potential user? What are the most important pros and cons when compared to other manufacturers' rucksacks or to Savotta's older models? And how does this piece of equipment withstand the raw punishment of field tests and even more important how is it going to perform in actual use after all the punishment?
These and many other things are demystified in this Savotta Jääkäri XL tube frame rucksack test and review video. Made in paid co-operation with Savotta ja Retkipaikka (english version of Retkipaikka is Filand, Naturally!).
Corruption warning! I got to keep the rucksack for free after doing this review. Regardless of this kind of corruption the review is honest. I myself don't want stuff laying in my corners if I don't really need them - even if those stuff are given for free. Also when it's about product testing it's done without pulling punches. The product really needs to be tested and not just made look like it's being tested.
Even though the text review is in Finnish someone might want to try their luck with it using Google translate or similar. Thank You Joe! So apparently my bone dry and bad humor works in the non-verbal end of the spectrum too. I've been meaning to write captions for these videos but unfortunately I've been too busy lately for that, but maybe some day I'll catch up. Savotta makes great stuff and Jääkäxi XL really impressed me also and it's always nice to hear that I've made my opinion so clear that even the occasional non-finnish speaking audience understand it :D

Agreed! Your video made my final decision to purchase the Jaakari Xl. I have a question. At around the 20:00 mark you compare the inner strapsand wear on the waist belt…have you found that the inner material wears quickly? I have a couple 100km on mine now maybe 300km? and that material seems to be very worn, frayed and pilled already. Its one of the only things I would change about the bag.
@JaredBorstmayer Sorry, I didn't get any notification about your comment! The wear seen in the straps and waist belt was caused by the road dragging test. You can also see how the end of the frame tube has taken damage because the dirt and mud in the road basically sandblasted it making it a lot shorter. Also the dropping test (the later one at the ski jump tower) the rucksack weighed 20kg as it was filled with moist firewood. Three drops from +10m height didn't harm the facbric parts but the frame became crooked because the rucksack hit the ground frame corner first. I didn't notice this crookedness until I had already hiked a short two-day trip with it so the frame is pretty though too. These were though and somewhat overkill tests but the intention was to show how though beating these rucksacks and their materials can take without being rendered useless. You can trust this bag in your adventures.

Awesome video !!! I did understand anything Ya said.... But I did understand that this pack is tuff as nails. You have Me sold on this pack.... Well the medium size one :)
It really is a tough mf of a pack! I also have the Jääkäri M in almost everyday use and it's so great (and I paid a full price for it, this XL I got to keep after the review, FYI). These are durable because of the quality craftmanship and versatile because of goos design and modularity. I just realized that I haven't owned any other packs than Savotta's for a few years.

Erittäin hyvä arvostelu ja testivideo. Rinkka saikin kunnon runtua. En usko,että mikään rinkka kestäisi tuota enempää. Kyse on kuitenkin sotilaskäyttöön tarkoitetusta rinkasta, joten sen täytyy kestää huomattavasti enemmän kuin kevyiden siviilirinkkojen. Putkirunkoisia rinkkoja on maailmassa harvassa. Näitä Savotan kantolaitteita on näkynyt TH-camssa joillakin jenkeillä ja briteillä. Ovat olleet ilmeisen tyytyväisiä hankintoihin.
Tuo kulutustesti vastasi varmaan muutaman ihmisen elinikää. Ja en usko,että kovin monella rinkka tippuu noin korkealta montaa kertaa. Luulen,että siinä vaiheessa myös rinkan omistaja on tippunut samalla kertaa kuin rinkka. Luultavasti tämä henkilö ei enää rinkkaa tarvitse sen jälkeen. Eli toisinsanoen rinkka kestää enemmän kuin käyttäjänsä.
Juur näin. Kieli poskessahan noi testit on osaltaan tehnyt, mut kyl ne toisaalta palvelee myös tatkoitustaan vaik menivätkin tarkoituksella yli. Tollasia kulumia ei oo tullu nähtyä ees vuosikymmeniä käytetyissä rinkoissa. Laatuvehje kestää kyllä isältä pojalle, jos sitä ei sit tosiaan vedä auton perässä tai visko vuorilta huvikseen 😅 rinkka ei kestä sellasta jatkuvasti, mut rajumpikaan kertakolaus saa tuskin rinkkaa jättämään käyttäjäänsä pulaan.

@@Kokovartalokommando Yeah, Savotta gear looks really impressive and worth the money it seems, I would rather pay some extra for something that will last alot longer than buying something cheap to be changed out often :)
That's a great principle to live by. I hope your rucksack serves you well. Savotta really might not be the cheapest or the lightest option full of most advanced fine tactical fiddly details, but at least Savotta gear and it's details will endure very harsh use and wear. Also these aren't just some brand stuff that costs much but is really made in developing countries in slave-like conditions for maximum profits but a real company that manufactures it's stuff well in Finland and Estonia. This is what I really like in Savotta.
@@Kokovartalokommando Yeah, I want to support european manufacturers in any way I can. Better work conditions, ethics and quality! I hope I will enjoy the backpack fully, I want to experience the wilderness, Im currently very obese and aiming for a better life, it will be a long and heavy journey, but worth it, with a backpack like this it make it abit easier on the body due to the frame and back/hip supports. Cant wait for my first trip :)

Kiitos perusteellisesta arviosta! Vakuuttavalta näyttää, ja kovin houkuttaa päivittää 80-luvulta peräisin oleva 906 vähän näppärämpään ja viimeistellympään. Kumpaakaan kantolaitetta ei ole suunniteltu 168 cm täti-ihmiselle, mutta ihmettelisin kovasti, jos Jääkäri XL olisi hankalammin "pienennettävissä" kuin 906. Pitäisi päästä testaamaan ennen isohkoa sijoitusta.
Eipä mittää, hyvä kun olin avuksi arvioineni! Kannattaa tuo kyllä selkään testata ennen hankintaa jos mahollista, mut voisin vannoa et jos 906 istuu niin istuu Jääkäri XL myös. Tää on samalla tavalla pienennettävissä koon puoleen.

Loistava esittely ja ennen kaikkea arvostelu video kyseisestä tuotteesta. Tää on hieno nähdä että kerrankin kun joku on saanut jotain ilmaiseksi ni viititään kurittaa sitä tuotetta ihan kunnolla koska se ei oo maksanu yhtään mitään. Toisin kuin monet muut vastaavanlaiset kaupalliset yhteistyö videot joissa kehutaan ne ilmaseksi saadut tuotteet maasta taivaisiin, ei keksitä mitään huono sanottavaa ja ei viititä testata sitä tuotetta äärirajoille sen pelossa että jos se kuitenkin hajoaa niin se näyttäisi huonolta, tässä taas tehtiin kaikki juuri päin vastaisessa järjestyksessä ja lopputulos on luottamuksen vahvistuminen vaan entisestään Savottan tuotteisiin. Pidempi aikasta ehkä mahdollisesti deepimpää katsausta odotellessa. Mutta jo tämä video vakuutti ainakin allekirjoittaneen sillä tasolla että kaipa tuollainen kapistus täytyy laittaa ostoslistalle ennen ensi kesän vaelluksia.
No katoha, kiitoksia antoisasta palautteesta! Pitäähä niitä kamppeita testata just sen takia, että tietää mistä puhuu. Lisäks tiiän Savotan kamppeet ja Jääkäri XL oli oikeesti kiinnostanu muuteki jo pitkään, ni tässä samalla tuli siis testattua Jääkärin lisäksi myös käytännössä Savotan muiden vastaavanlaisten (paksusta Cordurasta tehdyt putkirinkat) tuotteiden kestävyys. Överiksi heitettyjen testien jäliltä tuli myös todettua se mitä olin jo pitkään uumoillut, et näihin voi tosiaan luottaa vaativassakin paikassa. Tähän rinkkaan liittyen tulee varmaan jossain vaiheessa arvosteluvideon kakkososa jälkiajatuksilla ja muutamalla twistillä ;)

You don't have to take it apart to adjust back length. You can also just use brute force and slide it.
Of course you can but I don't think it's the best way. Or at least I've noticed that if the harness is correctly tightened then the friction tends to be so great that you basically can't move it up or down in the frame. Also you might end up damaging something when brute forcing it to move or at least making the friction parts to not hold as good as before. But in the end everyone can abuse their gear as they please and Savotta is probably one of the best candidates for taking the abuse :D
Thank you for having one of almost none reviews of this great looking pack. Like some other guys here I didn't understand a word, yet im fairly confident I'm going to buy this pack because of this video. Haha.
Anyhow, could I ask how the frames weight distribution is compared to other external frames you might have used? Was looking at the guide light or the NICE frame as well, but this ruck appeals more to me every day.
Also, did you get to buy the frame separately, or is that just an option for replacement?

I dunno if I can answer your questions properly but I'll try. I myself have the smaller Jääkäri L rucksack and it's awesome. I imagine this thing having really good weight distribution and he does say that in the video. And he did order a new frame separately from savotta website to replace the bent one. So it's awesome that you can replace broken parts separately.

Sorry for the delay, fortunately TuomioK (thanks / kiitos!) saw your comment and helped out. Yeah the weight distribution between shoulders and hips works well, but not the kinda way if you're slimmer backpacker like myself (I have to use the belt in its tighest setup and even then it feels a little loose). Savotta recently released an updated replacement hip belt for slimmer waists as the original belt is more towards bigger carriers. The frame was bent when the Jääkäri hit the ground full of firewood after some 15m fall, which was a part of my little over-the-top field tests. After that I got a new one from Savotta for free as I was doing this review for them and I got the Jääkäri XL for free as a reward for doing the review.

Nyt oli hyvä arvostelu. Piti ihan niillätöin tulla heittämään kommentti ja kehu. Itse harkitsin tämän ja fjällräven kajkan välillä, ja ostin sitten sen fjellun. Kieltämättä aina välillä vilkuilen myös tämän rinkan perään syrjäsilmällä kun kukaan ei huomaa :)
Kiitoksia! On se Kajka myöskin pätevä rinkka sen perusteella, mitä sitä olen ite päässyt vähän kantamaan ja säätelemään. Savotat on vaan paljon enemmän omaan makuun, koska ne on "laadukkaasti mehtäläisiä ja kestäviä" - vähä niiku mieki (tosin ite en varmaan kestä puotusta lentokoneesta yhtenä kappaleena) :D Lisäks oon putkirinkkojen vannoutunut fanipoika muutenkin.

Ainoa asia mikä jäi väi vähän kummittelemaan oli tuo veden pitävyys..Onkohan tosiaan näin, että vaikka koko päivän kirmaan tunturissa kaatosateessa niin kamat sisällä ei pahemmin kastu🤔
Toki käytän pääosin vedenpitäviä pussukoita tavaroita pakatessa, mutta kuitennii jäi mietityttään. Mutta eniveis, eiköhän tämä rinkka tule hommatua kevväämmällä uudeksi kantolaitteeksi.
Olehan hyvä vaan! Mahtava kuulla, että tästä viteosta on vielä yli vuosi julkaisun jälkeen iloa hankintaa pohtiville seikkailijoille :)
Savotan reput ja rinkat ei varsinaisesti ole vedenpitäviä, eikä niitä sellasena myöskään valmistajan toimesta mainosteta, mut ite päämateriaali (eli sisältä PU-pinnoitettu paksu Cordura), on erittäin vedenpitävä. Riippuu siis paljon kankaan puhkovien reikien määrästä, että kuinka vedenpitävä se kokonaisuus on ja Jääkäri XL sisältää kyllä aika turkasen paljon tuota remmihelvettiä, joten myös tikkausta riittää. Aikanaan 906 kesti aika hyvin kovemmat ja pidemmät sateetkin, mut Jääkäri XL:n kanssa voin luvata, että mitä rankempi sade tai mitä pidempään sataa, niin sitä varmemmin tulee vedet läpi vähän sieltä sun täältä noista molle-verkkojen tikkauksista. Tästä on pientä kokemusta, kun 2019 elokuussa kävin kekkospuistossa reissulla, joka just ennustettujen sateiden takia jäi vain parin päivän mittaiseksi, niin puoli päivää jatkunut sateen tuhutus vain tihkui vähäsen läpi rinkasta.
Tunturiin vähintään se sadesuoja rinkalle mukaan, jos ei jopa kaikki kamat suoraan kuivapusseihin sitten rinkan sisään, mut pikkusateista ei tartte säikähtää, vaikka makuupussi oiskin suojaamatta rinkan sisässä. Itekin mietin sadesuojaa yleensä vasta, jos sade vaan näyttää jatkuvan tai jos se uhkailee sataa rankasti.

Ps,, on kokemusta rinkan hajoamisesta Kepnekajsen
vuoristossa,(kylläkin toinen
fabrikat),,joten kestävyys on
,A&O-,,hyvät markkinat rinkalle
Karstulan vaakuna on tosiaan hyvä detalji, jolla olen ite kunnioittanut Savotan juuria - hienoa, että pieneltä paikkakunnalta ponnistetaan isossa mittakaavassa. Mutta kerro ihmeessä tarkemmin miten rinkka hajosi Ruotsin reissulla! Eihän nää Savotatkaan nimittäin aivan kaikkea kestä, vaan sopivan kolhun tai tällin ottaessa tulee varmasti vahinkoja. Menihän tästä omasta rinkastakin kertaosumalla runko aivan kieroksi kun sen tiputti n. 10-15 m korkeudesta 20kg painoisena ja se tuli rungon kulma edellä maahan. Silloin kaikki törmäysvoima kohdistui hetkellisesti pelkästään runkoon, joka sai sen vääntymään.
Haltin 70L palvellu jo 20v. Nyt olis jo aikaa luopua kun alkanut retkaseen puolelta toiselle, muuten täysin ehyt. Tämä esittely/testi oli hyvä👍Tilaukseen meni ensikesän Paistunturi 10vrk erämaan vaellus.

Hyvä kun tuossa hinauskohtauksessa oon enemmän huolissaan siitä, että rinkka tarttuu johonkin ja auton puskuri irtoaa, kuin siitä että rinkka hajoaisi :D
Kelirikon aikaan tästä tuskin on riskiä, kun pelkkää velliä koko tienpinta ja sellasta vauhtia ei noissa oloissa tohdi saada että rinkka taas suistuisi auton perästä pöpelikköön :D

Thank you too! Nice to hear that people appreciate this finnish-spoken video all around the world. Though I don't know how you understood anything if you don't understand finnish but great if the video was in any way helpful to you. The tent is Fjällräven Abisko Lightweight 2, a two-person tunnel tent with large vestibule. It was quite a good tent but I sold it to replace it with lighter solo tent Akto from Swedish/Estonian manufacturer called Hilleberg.
Vertailun vuoksi pitäisi nämä pudotus ja raahauskokeet suorittaa muillekin vastaavan hintaluokan vermeille. Savottaa aina veetään turpiin kun kaikki tietää että se nyt ainakin on kestävä :D
Niin pitäiskin, oon ihan samaa mieltä. Eipä vaan hirveästi ole amatöörillä rahkeita keräillä hillitöntä kokoelmaa rinkkoja murjottavaksi. Varsinki siis ku monet muut valmistajat tietää, että yliampuvat testit, joista Savotan kamppeet selviää, koituu niiden monien muiden kamppeiden kohtaloksi :D Mut testit oli tosiaan tarkotuksella yliampuvia, vaikkaki omalla tavallaan edustavia lopputulokseltaan. Asia erikseen kuiteki, et tartteeko vaellusrinkan aivan näin kovaa rääkkiä ikinä kohdata muualla ku mielivaltaisissa testeissä ;)

Possibilities for modification depend highly on your needs, like what kind of game you want to carry and do you need to carry it outside of the rucksack or inside and if inside then are you carrying something else in the rucksack with you at the same time. But in the end I'd say that this is highly modifiable rucksack and in the end it's just about the end users imagination and DIY-tendencies ;)

Kulutustestin osalta olisi hyvä olla jotain vertailupohjaa. Miten esim fjellun kajka olisi kestänyt testeissä myös? Tosin sitä vertailua harvan ihmisen lompakko kestäisi. 😁
Sinällään hassua, että rinkassa on kaksi juomapullotaskua, mutta tarvitset erilliset taskut juomapulloja varten. Eli ilmeisesti ne ovat niin napakat miltä näyttävätkin, etteivät ne sovellu pakatun rinkan kanssa juomapulloille?
Myös rakkotasku näytti tiukalta, oliko täysinäistä rakkoa helppo saada paikalleen?
Nyörikiristys tuntui hyvin vanhanaikaiselta konseptilta. Iham varmasti sille olisi löytynyt nykyaikainen helppo ja kestävä vaihtoehto, mutta sitä ei ehkä jaksettu kehittää?
Videon tuotanto oli jälleen kerran jämäkkää laatua. :)
Kiitti! Siulla oli tossa muutama ihan hyvä lisäpointti.
Muiden rinkkojen kulutuskestävyysvertailu, tai vertailu ylipäänsä ois ollu erittäin kallista ja työlästä. Sellasta tehhään vaa ammattimaisissa vertailuissa, joita näkee lehdissä ja muussa mediassa ja joihin kamppeiden testikappaleet saadaan käytännössä ilmaiseksi kaikki.
Sivujen alaosan taskut on yleiskäyttöiset taskut ja en ite niitä käytä juomapullojen kanssa, vaikka ne siihenkin sopii. Täydet pullot painaa sen pari kiloa yhteensä ja ylempänä olevat erilliset taskut mahollistaa sen että senkin pari kiloa saa vähän ylemmäs rinkassa, että painopiste ei olis nii alhaalla. Lisäks noihi irtotaskuihin saa kätevästi ensiapupakkauksen ja muuta pikkukilkettä pullojen kanssa. Joustotaskut toimii kyllä pullojenkin kanssa, jos rinkka ei ole aivan turkasen tiukaksi pakattu tavaraa.
Juomarakkotasku on juuri sopiva, vaan se suu on tiukan näköinen videolla kun siinä on joustava reunus. Hyvin toimi siis, ite käytin vielä suht pulleaa Source WXP 3l -rakkoa. Asia erikseen miten kiva sitä on puljata eestaas täyttäessä, kun siihen käsiksi pääseminen vaatii tavaramäärästä riippuen yläosaston kamppeiden purkamista.
Kuten näkyy, no täysin tyhjentävää arvostelua on pirun vaikee tehhä 😃
@@Kokovartalokommando joo, muutenkin jopa tän tason kuluttaminen on vähän siinä ja siinä, että oliko oikeasti tarpeellista. Mutta tuo kestävyys on Savotalla selkeä tekijä, jolla brändäsivät jääkärit ja haluavat saada sillä näkyvyyttä, niin sen ymmärtää.
Olihan tämä kattava arvio, mutta sitten erona tulee se perspektiivi. Esim siinä missä sulla on selkeä näppituntuma, että taskut sopivat pulloille, niin et osaa edes ajatella, että ne näyttävät liian tiukoilta. 😁
Toki tuo painopisteen siirto on hyvä täsmennys!

Perspektiivieroja tulee väkisin, koska yksittäisenä ihmisenä on mahotonta nähä asioita kaikkien muiden näkökulmasta, vaik käyttäisi loputtomasti aikaa. Pyrin silti kattavaan arvosteluun ja jouduin jopa jättämään osan detaljeista ihan tarkotuksella pois, ettei arvostelusta tullut aivan älyttömän mittaista. Valitettavasti ei vaan kaikki mahdu samalle videolle, koska rinkka on sen verran monipuolinen ja eri ihmiset kattoo eri asioita näissä. Onneks tosiaan tarkentavia kyssäreitä voi heittää!

Would you be able to compare the XL to the Sarma 80 Recon pack? The Sarma is supposed to be an updated and more comfortable version of the XL. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks and hope it's not so toe numbing cold there in Canada than it currently is here in northern Finland (some -30C)! But the question at hand: I haven't got to handle the Särmä RP80 myself but for what I could read at the Varusteleka website it's very similar rucksack when compared to Jääkäri XL. Or at least if you think of all the world's rucksacks these are basically the same big bulky military grade modular rucksack with just a few little differences. You basically can "eyeball" these differences yourself if you compare those Varusteleka's RP80 product pictures to Jääkäri XL video or pictures, but shortly put the RP80 is a "fatter" version dimension vise, but both rucksacks are basically the same volume, RP80 doesn't come with top lid (and if you want one you're supposed to buy Särmä daypack that acts as an attachable top lid), shoulder straps and hip belt are a little different (RP80 has padding in the back that he Jääkäri doesn't have and they have different lower back paddings) and the back length adjustment is a lot easier hiking back style "adjustment belt thing" (I don't have a better name for it currently) when compared to Jääkäri's virtually indestructible and easily field repairable but nevertheles not-so-easy-to-adjust shoe lace system, they also have different frame which shows at least in RP80 having a lower shelf and RP80 is some few hundred grams heavier. Both are made by Savotta in Finland and/or Estonia and based on my knowledge in Savotta rucksacks they are both great pieces of gear and I'd say that it's all a matter of taste and perspective that which one you like more. My opinion is Jääkäri over RP80, because J is a little lighter and "slimmer" profile and still packs all the main features you'd expect and it also has a top lid. If there's something I'd snatch to my J from RP80 it would be the shelf in the lower part of the frame and the easier adjustment of back length, but these are somewhat niche properties. RP80's carrying systems back padding seems a little better, at least in the upper back section, but this is just my thoughts by looking it.

Also worth mentioning a few things I forgot: RP80 has a lot more of molle webbing and also more (better? dunno...) of adjustment straps to squeeze the rucksack into a tight package when packing less gear. Jääkäri also has those but RP80 has more. Also I find those RP80's shoulder strap lenght adjustment d-rings a little unreliable because those can be prone to slipping. They are more durable than Jääkäri plastic buckles but it's a tradeoff and I also find those ITW Nexus made (and similar quality) plastic parts and buckles to be strong enough for even the thoughest of environments and applications that you can take your rucksack into. There's not so desperate need to put metal in that kinda place that it justifies the metal part not doing it job reliably and by this I mean it can slip but it doesn't break even under a hammer. Worth of a tradeoff? Not in my opinion. This is a bad design flaw but also fixable if you can manage to get those metal d-rings changed to quality plastic ones at a repairer or even by yourself if you have proper equipment for that kinda work.

Thanks! Hope You got something out of it even it doesn't have captions (yet) :D I haven't had any head and frame collision problems, even if I've had to crawl with this in my back. Still I recall getting the frame of one Savotta LJK -based special purpose rucksack in the back of my skull for a few times in the Finnish Defence Forces when we had all kinds of action and training that involved crawling and ducking etc. Anyway the original LJK (laskuvarjojääkäririnkka / paratrooper rucksack) is a great rucksack for hiking too and I still use mine occasionally as it has more of that oldschool "mojo".

Yeah, one should always adjust their pace and daily travel distances with the weight of their backpack in mind. A good backpack makes it easier to go faster and further though

how tall are you, I have a long back (short legs) I am 1.86 high. There is no specification for the back length and I do not speak Finnish
I'm about 1,8m and my back length measurement can actually be seen in the video, if you look closely the part in 7.53 - 8.08 where I'm showing that the back length should be adjusted to match the distance between the user's shoulder muscle's upper end and the uppermost part of the iliac crest. The respective back measurement in the rucksack itself is the distance between the hip belt's middle part and shoulder straps' attachment point. Hope this answered your question :)

Will polyurethane coating peal off???
It's pretty flexible and durable, so it won't dry and chip or peel off very quickly in normal use. I quess that probably after years and years of active use it will slowly start to show wear but I've never seen any wear during 10+ years of normal use in my own Savotta gear.

Missä tuossa repussa on kymmenen kiinnityskohtaa? Kohdassa 7:18 lasken vain 8 repussa kiinni olevaa kiinnityslenkkiä. Onko kantolaitteesss vielä jotkut kaksi kiinnityskohtaa reppuun?
Nytpä täytyy sanoa että en ole satavarma miksi sanoin 10 kpl vaikka 8kpl niitä näyttää olevan. Joku ajatusvirhe varmaan käynyt. Joka tapauksessa tuo on pikkudetalji, joka ei varmaan vaikuta kenenkään ostopäätökseen tai arvostelun pätevyyteen, vai mitä olet mieltä? ;)

Hi may I know will it get over heat on your back carrying it for long distance hiking.
Not sure what you mean but if you are concerned about the rucksack making your back sweat more than usually then your worries are reasonable, but only when it's really hot and/or sunny weather. Normal mild or cold autumn weathers won't make your back sweat because the backside in this rucksack is pretty well ventilated as it hangs detached from your back. Hope this answered your question!

Thank you. From that video… they use the sleeping bag compartment as we refer to it as…. for food ,stove storage etc. They pack the sleeping bag higher up for weight balance?
It would be more correct to just refer to the lower compartment as lower compartment like many here in Finland actually do. This is because Finnish rucksacks (meaning mainly Savottas and their copies) are designed in a way that the lower compartment is easier to access and it is therefore used to hold the gear needed during the day like cookware and food. The more cumbersomely accessed lid-covered upper compartment is left to be stuffed full of camping and sleeping gear because user only takes them out once a day.
To be honest I'm not sure if this actually (or at least always) delivers the best results regarding weight balance, because the fabric and insulation stuff filled camping gear is at least as far as I know less "dense" than metal and dense plastics in other equipment even though camping gear tends to be bulkier. In order to counter this I've personally always used the Jääkäri in a way that originates from the old Savotta 906 rucksack: water bottle filled side pouches in the sides of the upper compartment.

Yeah, absolutely, if you're into pals-webbing and external tube frames in rucksacks and somewhat heavy loads is your thing. This defenitely isn't a grammer's choice as the rucksack itself weighs approx. 3,5 kg. Sorry for not including captions already, I've just been too busy to make those still.

Riippuu kengistä, mut yleisesti sanoisin että mahtuu. Pitkävartiset saappaat tai tuhdit maiharitkin / vaelluskengätkin mahtuu kyllä, mutta syö tietysti tilaa kaikelta muulta ja tietty pitkävartisten saapasten vartta joutunee taittamaan.
Joo, selkeesti Savotalta on jälleen kerran tullu silkkaa sekundaa ja paskaa, niin kuin ennenkin... =) Itsellä on jo toisessa polvessa menossa Rajajääkäri, jonka isukki hankki joskus 1980-luvulla...
Luulisin, että kommenttisi oli sarkastinen, mutta ihan satavarma en nyt ole kyllä. Joka tapauksessa hyvä jos vanha Rajajääkäri vielä mennä porskuttaa.
