Also to check if old seeds are viable, see if you can germinate them indoors in a take away little tub with wet tissue/kitchen roll in. Leave to see if they sprout and then put them into seed trays of soil to grow on in the greenhouse.
You are going to be busy later this year Andy, I bet you cannot wait ! .... A nice Glass of red, sat in a chair, in the Greenhouse .... perfect relaxation.
I always find it exciting to start planting out and planning the garden each year! I’m sure you will enjoy as well, Andy! Just look forward to the fresh tomatoes!
Hi Andy, your potatoes need to be in a light, frost free place while they chit or chits will get too long Also, to check your fuchsia, scrape the bark a little with your nail. If green it is still alive. GJ
I have a few suggestions. You could rent a stump grinder to re move all your stumps. About edging your beds, I suggest you widen them and straighten the edges making it a lot easier. I think a visit from a arborist would be a good idea of what needs to be done to the trees and get an estimate. Are you going to clear the underbrush on the other side of the stream to open the view. Maybe rent a chipper or purchase a small one for homeowners. Lastly I watch a amazing TH-cam channel call Garden Answer. You would learn a whole lot! Thank you for a great format and taking me along for your journey. PS you can grow geraniums and dahlias from seeds.
@@AndyMac If the land across the stream belongs to someone else could you not get permission to clear all the under growth? Most people would not mind if you clean the growth away. Is there a wall there? How close is the neighbor to you? I do not know how your laws are in England work, but If your neighbor is not living near property line, I feel that no one would care if you just opened up your view and enhance that small little area.
Good luck with all of those seeds, especially the older ones. I don't have a garden in my current home but from when I did I do remember that there was always something to do but when you harvest fresh salads and vegetables, it was all worth it.
Wow a lot of seed. Most of them will germinate in your greenhouse now. Just chuck um in. My toms are getting sown this weekend into a cold greenhouse. Good luck 😊😊
Perfect timing for sowing tomatoes. As for watering, poke some tiny holes in the lid of the plastic bottle with a hot skewer and that works a treat, and it's free 👍
You can sow all brassicas, onions or hardy flowers in the greenhouse Andy .Peas, sweetpeas, a tray of lettuce ,beetroot, chard all can go in now .My greenhouse is down as low as 2 degrees at night and even minus 1 and all of my seedlings are doing fine .potatoes you can start in buckets indoors or outside end of March .Get your onions out of those packs the sets started in modules .Radish can go in direct ..Tomatoes I start end of march in house .All Tom's start in house and peppers .lastly do not start your cukes and courgettes or melons till half way through April they won't tolerate the slightest cold .Carrots do not transplant and need sowing direct in there rows .Yes bottom watering or spraying is better but don't keep them too damp and remove the lid the minute they germinate or they'll rot off 🙂
seeds do have a "best before date", that doesn't mean they'll spoil or go rotten or anything, but the chances of them sprouting diminish over the years. So best to adjust your expectations when sowing. Time to get some plants on your windowsill indoors :D Outdoors on this time of year: Potatoes (make sure they don't freeze once they surface) peas and spinach...
It would be a good investment if you bought some trays etc from Garland garden products. The propagation range especially. They are robust and will last for years. Buy a heat mat with a thermometer (£20 /£25) As soon as things germinate you will need light so you might consider a grow light to stop seedlings getting leggy. If your tomato seedlings get leggy then you can bury them deeper or layer them in the ground and you will get roots from the stem. Loved your renovation series. Have fun with your garden.
Good old Monty Don uses a pencil to create a hole for the seeds then kinda sieves a bit more soil over the whole tray. You can also buy little watering heads screw tops that go on old cola bottles (or you could just use a fine head watering can!). Good to grow flowers alongside your fruit/veggies as the bees will help pollinate them. It’s exciting growing your own stuff, especially when you’re kind of winging it! 😊 Oh and our fuschias looked like that till fairly late into spring last year but they did flower late summer and lasted ages!
Could talk about growing things for hours but couple of ideas for you, get those onions and shallots into some cell trays and keep them in the greenhouse, by the time the ground has warmed up they'll be an established plant and you can plant them out into your beds or plant them into pots, both work, for pots get to Morrisons and look around the flowers, they sell off the pots they sell the flowers in and are about 10l pots and they sell them 8 pots for 99p so are an absolute bargain, they just need some holes drilled in the bottom of them. Those spuds you can plant into some nice big containers I use the old curb side recycling bins, leave them in the greenhouse until the chance of frosts has gone then move them outside, spuds grow just as well if not sometimes better in containers than in the ground. The North East is about 3-4 weeks behind the south coast weather wise so sometimes we've just got to wait a little bit longer before getting seeds going but they all get there in the end!
I've taken the gamble and planted everything outside. I have loads spare so might plant some in the greenhouse as you say (in pots)... just as a backup. 😂
@AndyMac Can't have too many backup plants, apart from when you no longer have any room for anything in the greenhouse or outside, which is fairly normal for most gardeners, my greenhouse is already full and that's just as the seasons started as well!
Hi Andy, good job on the seeds in the planting trays, they should be ok to put in the green house in April, can't wait to see how you get on. catch you soon take care
I could go on a long ramble (again) of bits of advice, but I thinks it's better to direct you to the channel of Charles Dowding who is a brilliant Fruit & Veg grower and has an excellent channel crammed with great advice ! Don't listen to him late at night, because although very interesting he is very calm and soothing and can send you to sleep ! More than anything just enjoy yourself, not everything will work and if it does you'll have not enough space - my tomatoes have a germination rate of around 90% ( even from ancient seed ) so you might have quite a lot, but you can always plant some out in the garden borders too, it's quite nice to mix veg with the flowers and sometimes confuses the pests ! Some other seeds are less reliable from old seed ( such as Lettuce & Beans from memory ) if you google it there are lots of tables out there, but as you say no harm in trying ! Oh, and carrots really need to be planted in situ, due to the long root !
Yah, pretty much everything needs a fairly warm soil temperature to germinate. I use seed-starting mats (basically a heating pad) to give my seeds a head start. After they're started they can stand some cold. If you've got the space you could start them indoors on seedling mats and under a shop light (doesn't need to be fancy or expensive,) until the seedlings have a set of true leaves then they could probably move to the greenhouse without a prob.
A good trick is to use a thin drill bit and drill 5 holes in the top of a water bottle lid. You can then squeeze the bottle and it will act like a rose on a watering can and not drown the seeds.
These videos are so relaxing-I really look forward to them. Unfortunately I think a glitch is unsubscribing me which is happening on another you tuber I subscribe to, who also has a second channel. Just thought I’d mention it. Cheers 👍🏻
Hey Andy 🤗 really enjoying your gardening journey so far 🌱 this is my 4th season growing veg and every year brings new challenges, successes and the occasional disappointment 😅 I really recommend 'Grow Veg' as a beginner Chanel for all the tips you will need 😊 Ben is such a good teacher and I owe so much to him 🍅🌶️🌶️🌱🥒🥕🥔🌸 looking forward to your next episode 🤗🌱🏴

Hello, everything truly is trial and error. This early in the year you will struggle to germinate anything in the greenhouse but you could always just start on a sunny windowsill or above a radiator, most seeds don't need light to germinate and just heat. I follow a lot of what Charles Dowding does when it comes to timings and his way of gardening so hes well worth a look up!

Andy, the sun will fade the sharpy on the labels. Make sure to use a pencil for the labels you will be using outside 👍
Good tip! Will see how it goes. 👍

Totally. OK as a snack but otherwise I think they're a bit pointless... but if I can't grow them I've got problems. 😂

Yeah I figured similar. I've had a lot of these seed packets from almost 15 years ago so want to give them one last try before binning them. 😁👍
