Tuna in the brine is about the singer coming out of and still battling with years of Depression, Eating disorders, and needing medications which made him numb
The Tuna metaphor is how he was packaged, and consumed as a shiny product when he was actually dead inside and this song was him feeling all the different emotional beats after he stopped taking his medication and went from feeling nothing to feeling everything and coming to terms with the roller coaster of learning what emotions and feeling things was again all while having to maintain his public image as a massive star and idol of youth

The whole Diorama album is so multi faceted and complex. Daniel Johns can hear multiple melodies at the same time which enabled him to write such deep and complex arrangements on the whole album. Ben’s drumming is the perfect mix of subtle and sublime, his ability to interpret the timings and keep the tone whilst expressing emotion through the beat is phenomenal. Chris plays bass like it’s a part of him, always perfectly complimenting the composition whilst leading the melody. All three of the members are outstanding musicians

Alot of Daniels lyrics are off the chart and cryptic. Like working out a puzzle. One of the great joys of his music is learning them, and opening your own mind. He really is quite special.

Tuna in the brine is a metaphor. Daniel said the sheen it has when you open a can of tuna is a metaphor for coming out of your shell

Very impressive...this a long way off from "Fat Boyee Fat boyee wait till tomorroooooow" haha
It should be noted that the orchestral arrangements were done by the legendary Van Dyke Parks but its still amazing that Daniel Johns even wrote something like this

Thank you, VAN DYKE PARKS for taking a mellow post grunge album, and making it universally brilliant. The movie "Shine" is about him. He arranged 100%. He wrote about 60% of this album. He was the composer for Brian Wilson in the wild Beach Boy days. Daniel Johns, I love, but can play power chords like Kurt (not the best.)

At first I thought/hoped we'd be led thru that door...I love dioramas. Doesn't matter, pleasant, rich enough journey. ;>D
You two offer multi-faceted takes that are as enjoyably light-hearted as they are insightful. Vocal technique, cuisine, arranging and production. You're not charging enough lol. $$$/;>D
I'd love a tee or too, btw.

Painting a lie, seeing the colours but you seem closer to everything is such a meaningful line. Dan has synethesia, which means that he senses things differently and often talks about sounds and emotions in terms of colours. I interpret this passage as him remarking that he can still paint in colours, but it’s a lie, he’s faking it because while on his meds he can’t really feel anything, and he’s commenting about the surreality of it compared to what others who genuinely feel emotion must feel like.
I think that little pause in the song (he would sometime sigh during that pause live) symbolizes coming off the meds. Then, closer now then we ever have been, meaning oh, I’m feeling stuff now…closer now, then we ever should…this is a little scary, should I feel like this, closer now, then we’ve ever been before, closer to everything…so all these feelings and emotions are real and I feel them like everyone else now. Then you can literally hear the song bloom in the busking for change part. But then after the big crescendo…does he go back to taking the pills again? Or is he mentioning that the animals who are after him should consider medication?

You should check out the making of Diorama, it's really good, I think it's only like 30mins long, gives you a lot of information into the mechanics behind the album and a lot went on in that period for Daniel.

Imagine the inspiration for this piece was was John saw the peeling back of opening a tin of tuna, he said it was the shiniest thing he ever saw, and used that as the metaphor to write this masterpiece, that’s ART.
