This is one of those cars that no matter where you drive it. people don't give it a second look and think you just have an old crap car. When in reality, its a real jewel.

@sploofmonkey if I recall correctly, the bonneville dates back to the 60s. It was a front wheel drive car instead of awd, though I certainly feel as if styling cues were taken from the 6000 ste.
I am now the proud owner of this car. The very one in this video! I also have another one that is in not quite as nice condition, same color, and has only 34,000 miles on it. It has no body rust and no dents, but could use paint. I don't need it anymore-I don't need two of them. I will probably sell it on Craigslist or eBay later this year. Meanwhile if anyone is interested, just reply to this comment.

Love this car. I wish I had this version. I still drive a 1990 Pontiac 6000 LE, which now has over 270,000 miles on it. I did put a new engine in it at 250,000 miles, but the body is still good with no rust, and generally easy to repair. MAACO did a nice job repainting it for me (the original black color). It rides nice, goes down the interstate well, and still gets almost 30 mpg with a potent V6. I plan on keeping the car for many years to come.
I drove my Mom's 1990 after 1996 and I used to race it down country roads in Va and the all wheel drive is very nice. Never got stuck in the snow either. After a few hundred dollars in suspension and brake upgrades it is a beast. Pontiac was way ahead of their time
Wish they had offered the AWD system on other GM performance cars in the era. I always thought the Pontiac Fiero or Buick Reatta would’ve benefited from a Turbocharged Buick 3800 V6 powering this AWD system through a 6-speed Getrag or Tremec manual gearbox. Unfortunately I imagine a lot of these STE’s are going to be converted to RWD so idìots can drift them into telephone poles.
A 1989 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD 3.1 liter, and a 1989 Pontiac Bonneville SSE 3.8 liter without the all-wheel drive, those two are the most genuine American cars that GM has ever produced in the late 80s.

I had an '87 STE I LOVED IT. I finally had to get rid of it at 250,000 miles, due to i got a camper, and had no place to park it. I wish I would have kept, and restored it. This was the best car GM sent down the line, sans STE AWD, and Bonneville SSE
Agreed. Late 80s was a great time for mid sized GM cars like this. These STE's, and even the Olds 98's and 88's were way ahead of their time. Excellent gas mileage. 3.1 and 3.8 both.

This Pontiac 6000 ste is so driver oriented it had a combination of sporty and a family car loaded with options and safety features I remember one of my cousins had one new I drove it it was. a 1990 ste 6000 it had the same color and interior with all the bells and whistles great video on your 1 owner cars
They kept making the 3100 engine for many years; it was a GM staple through the '90s and early '00s. I have one in a 2003 Malibu (sounds exactly the same when I floor it!), and I am constantly amazed at the fuel mileage. Rated 20 city / 29 highway, but I get about 25 in the city, and 32 highway. Once, in all-highway driving, I actually got 35.5. Barring a single problem with the head gasket at 72,000 (which was quickly fixed), it has been one of the most reliable engines I have owned.

Absolutely. Beautiful and rare car BUT...the AWD 6000 SE cars are the rarest of the two. The SE's were mechanically and appearance wise the same. The SE cars did not have the rear headrests and the front seat controls. No SWRC's, a lower level stereo head unit and most if not all had no rear spoiler. The were offered to be more affordable compared to the loaded STE trimmed cars.

That was a car that was truly ahead of its time. And extremely expensive at the time.. That's why they're so rare. The chassis was unique, and a conglomeration of the old X FWD cars and the W chassis that came out in 1990. Because of the cost, the AWD system was experimented for just 89-90 1/2. Shame though.. it gave Subarus a run for their $ with a lot more power. That 1 has the optional Bosch 4 wheel ABS, and electronic load leveling suspension, ala Cadillac. If memory serves, it was a combination of air over hydraulic to set strut/shock dampening, but used an actual computer with electronic sensors instead of levers attached to the chassis, specifically as a stand alone system. Neat car. I'd love to see the production #s of that car, as equipped.
I read many many moons ago, that someone was trying to shove a Series II 3800 S/C V6 into a regular 6000 after the 2.8 V6 gave up the ghost.. Wonder if he was ever successful?
CerealMarshmallows Hey don't even worry about it. That is one of the best conditioned 6000STE's I've seen anywhere. I like 80's era GM cars, Citation x-11's, V6 Cavalier Z24's, Luminas, Pontiac 6000's, Fiero's, Chevette's, you name it. I don't care how crappy most people might think they are but I'd rather have any of those cars over some goofy modern eco-egg piece of crap. I had a 2002 Kia Spectra I bought last month. First and last time I ever buy a modern car. Sold it and bought an '89 Z24.
My first car was an 88 STE with a 5 speed from 94 to 98. I knew nothing about cars then and got sick of paying mechanics to fix things all the time but now I realize that it was all normal maintenance for a car past 100k and I wish that I'd kept it all the way through college instead of switching to a 90 Mitsubishi Eclipse. That was a cool car with the turbo but had major problems that cost me a small fortune. If TH-cam has existed I'm sure that I would have done the repairs on the 6000 myself and nothing would have been a big deal.
My parents loved this car, it was one of the first cars to have dials on the the steering wheel that wasn't a luxury car. But the problem was when they took it to a mechanic, the schematics were so unique. That they paid alot to repair it.

If I lived in the USA I'd have bought it from you sight unseen that's a very cool clean car. It's really a mini-Bonneville, with the air suspension, tire inflator, etc etc I own a 1990 Bonneville SSE that's got 240k miles, almost like new and it's the most comfortable car I've ever had. That Pontiac accessory kit is UNFIDABLE and it sucks I'd love to get one, missing in my Bonnie

I had a 1987 version... had the Sunroof, AirBag suspension 2WD ABS... wish I never got rid of it either! The odometer flipped to from 199999 kms to 100000kms because they only had a 1 in the hundred thousand spot.. no 8 :)
GM was ahead of its time with the Pontiac 6000/STE/AWD. And they were well built back in the 80's. I thought GM's quality started going downhill by the late 90's.
I had three of these because back in the day this was a real drivers car. Pontiac went out of their way to take a mediocre sedan and make it special. In its time it was a classic, but, of course that was the 1980s and cars are much better today.
it was also the best winter beater i ever had and i had 10 cars since this one mind you i drive an average about 100000 km a year it was a classic i miss it!!!
They also had AWD in 1990, but on the SE model as the STE had been dropped in the '90 models. The only difference was the interior was not as luxurious with manual seats and analog gauges. Apart from that, almost identical with the same paint scheme.
The 6000 STE was known, by me at least, for its characteristic exhaust sound. It got to the point where I didn't even have to look to know that it was a 6000 STE accelerating away.
I had a burgundy 1983 6000LE and loved it so much I bought a silver and black 1986 6000STE. The 83 was totaled in a bad wreck in 1991 but the 86 is still going after 485000 miles. I hit a deer with it in NOV 2000 and insurance still repaired it as it only had 435K back then. I gave it to my parents and they love it. These were SUPER cars and wish I had one in mint condition again. Loved the digital dash at night. There will NEVER be a car like it again. :(
worked on those when they were brand new. neat car. hard to find parts for because of all the 4 wheel drive stuff was only out 2 years. Liked the 1983 to 1988 6000 STE better or the 1990 grand prix STE turbo.
My Grandparents had an '86 6000LE sedan, Bronze/Brown color. they had that car for 10 years. It was a great car. I wish I could find it and buy it back.
Incorrect. You could get AWD on the lesser trimmed SE cars. They were more rare than the STE's, offering no rear headrest, spoiler, SWRC's, and no front seat controls. The radio head unit was more base as well. They were a lower cost option to customers but still offered the same drivetrain and wheel combo.
Maintain your car, less problems. You shouldn't blame the car manufacturer. If you drive a car until it has issues, you are always going to have problems. Get your car in the shop every 3 to 6 months for preventive maintenance and your mechanic will see issues and fix them. Thats what I do have zero problems with any of my cars.
The AWD was full time, through a center differential. The selectable part was the center differential LOCK. When open, it's conceivable that only one driveshaft, either front OR rear, would receive power. When locked, both driveshafts turned equally. Each axle still had its own differential, of course. So even when locked, you might only get power to one front wheel and one rear wheel.
That digital dash on the STE is the coolest thing ever. Finding one of these cars in a junkyard is just as rare as finding one on the road. Pontiac 6000 LE's can be pretty common if you're actually looking for them, but the STE is a true diamond in the rough in terms of rarity.

I just realized I've come across several of your videos. You certainly have come across some amazing GM cars of the 90s. Thanks for the videos so I can know of these rare cars. Strangely these cars seem much lower in production numbers then 60s and 70s pony cars and now-considered classics. The 90s were a strange time for GM as far as making low production number of their best-trimmed cars!
My sister had a 83 model with a Chevy 2.8. In high school I put a motor from a 86 olds in it. Ran better with the boneyard engine because the electronic carb issues the first engine had.
Wow my cousin has this one 1990 new I drove it ran good last year for the Pontiac 6000 1990 this was sportier than the cutlass cierra or the buck century or chevy celebrity
i have a 1990 Pontiac 6000 se all wheel drive and was wondering if you could get pics of the rear suspension set up or if there is a part number for the shocks I cant find them trying to restore mine and yeah these cars are definitely a needle in a hay stack but ive pulled a 2009 dodge nitro out of a ditch last winter its a tank in the snow perfect for iowa weather as long as you put rustolium on it to prevent rust
Robert, yes! Yours is actually more rare than the STE cars. Not a lot of people know that. So cool that you have one! STE's are rare but SE AWD cars are SUPER RARE, probably less than half of the production numbers as the STE cars. Congrats man!

@@shelly6328 ……Shelley the 6000 AWD was only offered in 1989 and 1990 in red and blue only. Maybe yours was a 6000 LE. My family owned Pontiac dealerships back in the day.
that inflator thing is pretty cool. my friend's 93 bonneville had a lot of options that being one of them. but the car was a horribly messed up electrical mess. we at first thought it was a suspension thing too, b/c when we turned it on it seemed to lift the rear of the car a bit. but then I found that long air hose and figured it out. great car, but if I really loved that car, I would have put more than the factory floor mats in it.
This is only one of a small handful of passenger cars in 1989 that offered all wheel drive. The only ones that come to mind in this era are the BMW, Audi, this car and the then-recently discontinued AMC Eagle. Mercedes didn’t offer 4Matic models until 1991 and even then it was rare.
@CerealMarshmallows they made several cars on this platform, the FWD A platform. The Chevrolet Celebrity, Pontiac 6000, Buick Century & Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera/Cruiser. We have a 1993 Buick Century Wagon.
How did that ever make it to production? Pontiac were mostly making front wheel drive cars, so AWD is extremely unusual for them in 1989. If the full "parent options" for the '03 Pontiac GTO came in, it would have AWD as an option as well. Its parent car, the Holden Monaro, in HSV form had a rare few AWD models
B-MAN Yeah, I think the Pontiac Aztec flop was the proverbial straw that broke said automakers back... Practicality, utilitarian, gobs of slick features, but they took ugly to new heights with the Aztec!

the cars look identical even tho theyre a year apart mine dosnt have the digital dash but I have the all wheel drive lock option like the 89 but your only susposed to lock it in on wet terrain or snow because it is hard on the cv halfshafts and to engage it you have to have the car running in park press the awd lock and shift to drive otherwise it grinds the transmission gears
Damn this is a rare find another car that's not seen on the road too often, you could even tell from the front of this car how exotic and rare the cars style is. It's just well said cars from the 80s were better.
This was my first car, really fancy electronics for its time but man the quality was not good, had to replace water pump, and the alternator died on me one day will never forget was a first date night.... 😅😅

gchsbus my 86 6000 se had a 2.8 V6 overdrive auto trans and the Varajet 2 barrel carb. Not really fast but it was one of the best cars i've ever owned
These pontiacs are very reliable more reliable than a grand am and grand prix these cars are just like the chevrolet celebritys

They made great race cars back in the mid to late 80's in what was called, the "little car" era.

GM was ahead of its time with the Pontiac 6000/STE/AWD. And they were well built back in the 80's. I thought GM's quality started going downhill by the late 90's.
I had three of these because back in the day this was a real drivers car. Pontiac went out of their way to take a mediocre sedan and make it special. In its time it was a classic, but, of course that was the 1980s and cars are much better today.
I remember they had two of these in the movie "RoboCop" it was called the "6000 SUX" , OCP used the Ford Taurus SHO for the police cars.
it was also the best winter beater i ever had and i had 10 cars since this one mind you i drive an average about 100000 km a year it was a classic i miss it!!!
They also had AWD in 1990, but on the SE model as the STE had been dropped in the '90 models. The only difference was the interior was not as luxurious with manual seats and analog gauges. Apart from that, almost identical with the same paint scheme.

The 6000 STE was known, by me at least, for its characteristic exhaust sound. It got to the point where I didn't even have to look to know that it was a 6000 STE accelerating away.

I had a burgundy 1983 6000LE and loved it so much I bought a silver and black 1986 6000STE. The 83 was totaled in a bad wreck in 1991 but the 86 is still going after 485000 miles. I hit a deer with it in NOV 2000 and insurance still repaired it as it only had 435K back then. I gave it to my parents and they love it. These were SUPER cars and wish I had one in mint condition again. Loved the digital dash at night. There will NEVER be a car like it again. :(

worked on those when they were brand new. neat car. hard to find parts for because of all the 4 wheel drive stuff was only out 2 years. Liked the 1983 to 1988 6000 STE better or the 1990 grand prix STE turbo.

My Grandparents had an '86 6000LE sedan, Bronze/Brown color. they had that car for 10 years. It was a great car. I wish I could find it and buy it back.

Incorrect. You could get AWD on the lesser trimmed SE cars. They were more rare than the STE's, offering no rear headrest, spoiler, SWRC's, and no front seat controls. The radio head unit was more base as well. They were a lower cost option to customers but still offered the same drivetrain and wheel combo.
It was a shame GM didn't offer that AWD system on the A-body wagons.
Maintain your car, less problems. You shouldn't blame the car manufacturer. If you drive a car until it has issues, you are always going to have problems. Get your car in the shop every 3 to 6 months for preventive maintenance and your mechanic will see issues and fix them. Thats what I do have zero problems with any of my cars.

The AWD was full time, through a center differential. The selectable part was the center differential LOCK.
When open, it's conceivable that only one driveshaft, either front OR rear, would receive power. When locked, both driveshafts turned equally. Each axle still had its own differential, of course. So even when locked, you might only get power to one front wheel and one rear wheel.
no it's full time all wheel drive but hass a diff lock for slick situations I've had mine for 5 years my dad bought it new when it first came out

That digital dash on the STE is the coolest thing ever. Finding one of these cars in a junkyard is just as rare as finding one on the road. Pontiac 6000 LE's can be pretty common if you're actually looking for them, but the STE is a true diamond in the rough in terms of rarity.
As time goes on, I'm believing more and more that mine is the only mint condition one out there.

I just realized I've come across several of your videos. You certainly have come across some amazing GM cars of the 90s. Thanks for the videos so I can know of these rare cars. Strangely these cars seem much lower in production numbers then 60s and 70s pony cars and now-considered classics. The 90s were a strange time for GM as far as making low production number of their best-trimmed cars!

My sister had a 83 model with a Chevy 2.8. In high school I put a motor from a 86 olds in it. Ran better with the boneyard engine because the electronic carb issues the first engine had.

i have a 1990 Pontiac 6000 se all wheel drive and was wondering if you could get pics of the rear suspension set up or if there is a part number for the shocks I cant find them trying to restore mine and yeah these cars are definitely a needle in a hay stack but ive pulled a 2009 dodge nitro out of a ditch last winter its a tank in the snow perfect for iowa weather as long as you put rustolium on it to prevent rust
Robert, yes! Yours is actually more rare than the STE cars. Not a lot of people know that. So cool that you have one! STE's are rare but SE AWD cars are SUPER RARE, probably less than half of the production numbers as the STE cars. Congrats man!

3100 was the sequential port injection version of that motor. That motor was called the 3.1 litre multi-port fuel injection.

@@shelly6328 ……Shelley the 6000 AWD was only offered in 1989 and 1990 in red and blue only. Maybe yours was a 6000 LE. My family owned Pontiac dealerships back in the day.
that inflator thing is pretty cool. my friend's 93 bonneville had a lot of options that being one of them. but the car was a horribly messed up electrical mess. we at first thought it was a suspension thing too, b/c when we turned it on it seemed to lift the rear of the car a bit. but then I found that long air hose and figured it out. great car, but if I really loved that car, I would have put more than the factory floor mats in it.

Amazing... cars could actually extend forward beyond the front wheels at one time.
This is only one of a small handful of passenger cars in 1989 that offered all wheel drive. The only ones that come to mind in this era are the BMW, Audi, this car and the then-recently discontinued AMC Eagle. Mercedes didn’t offer 4Matic models until 1991 and even then it was rare.

How did that ever make it to production? Pontiac were mostly making front wheel drive cars, so AWD is extremely unusual for them in 1989. If the full "parent options" for the '03 Pontiac GTO came in, it would have AWD as an option as well. Its parent car, the Holden Monaro, in HSV form had a rare few AWD models

I want one of these with a 3.1 turbo swap, a 3800 series 2 swap, or a 3500/3900 swap ... 😭⚠️🙌🙏🤝 that exhaust note is epic, out of all the cars on that platform, the ste and Eurosport are my fave, I love the ciera international to... and century t-type.
the cars look identical even tho theyre a year apart mine dosnt have the digital dash but I have the all wheel drive lock option like the 89 but your only susposed to lock it in on wet terrain or snow because it is hard on the cv halfshafts and to engage it you have to have the car running in park press the awd lock and shift to drive otherwise it grinds the transmission gears

Damn this is a rare find another car that's not seen on the road too often, you could even tell from the front of this car how exotic and rare the cars style is. It's just well said cars from the 80s were better.
This was my first car, really fancy electronics for its time but man the quality was not good, had to replace water pump, and the alternator died on me one day will never forget was a first date night.... 😅😅
