It doesn’t really tell how he went from being in a bird form to a shapeshifter and then how he ended up being a axolotl and it’s more like 1/3 of all the hermit’s backstory’s but it was a good story!

He's a shapeshifter. He imatates whatever animals he feels like at the time. Sorry I didn't make that clear. And the lab is really only a major part of Zedaphs backstory. The others have much more complex ones. Like tango being an exiled blaze, Rendog being treated like a full dog and abused, and doc existing (and losing his arm and eye)because of watchers. Point being, things are much more than meets the eye. You'll have to stay tuned to find out.
