- This Shimano Calcutta 700 fishing reel was one of the more difficult reel in the bag projects I've had. It consisted of a few reels in pieces with some broken and missing. See how to assemble and give this reel a 2nd Chance by following a step by step restoration process.
I have been servicing #fishing #reels for over 25 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe to see more on fishing #reel repair and service

Thank you for this Dennis and now I know wear to will pop
Nice work Dennis, I enjoy a bit of mystery.
A Well Done Job 👍 Dennis ! Patience and A Sense Of Humor is Right ! I Even Needed Some Doing My 2 Reels and 5 Ratchets . I Have More Reels To Do Of Course.
Thanks - it kept me guessing for some time!
What a job well done! Cheers to Dennis!
Glad you enjoyed it - Thanks for watching
Amazing! Love watching your videos. I'll never work on a Calcutta but enjoyed watching you put it back together. I've worked on many others thanks to your videos. I still think fishing them is a little more fun. Thanks.
Fishing them is almost s much fun as giving them a 2nd Chance to make others happy while fishing
Thanks for the note and for watching and yes, I do enjoy my time on the water too!
I took apart one of my Abu Garcia CD6 6000BG center drag reels yesterday and with the help of a schematic and Rick Stivers who was on the phone, I got it serviced and back together. Very few reels I own or have ever touched are any smoother than this Abu Garcia center drag reel. This one is much more complicated than the CD4 3000 you did a video on a few years back. It was your video that got me interested in these reels and now I have five. I love your technique for figuring out this Calcutta. I’ve used it many times myself. Sometimes with my vision limitations I can’t read schematics. I find them on my iPad Pro and then enlarge that part or parts I want to see. This usually works for me. You did a fantastic job on this one Dennis. - Chris
Good tip on enlarging the schematic on the iPad - Sounds like the center drag is ready to fish - enjoy - Dennis
Hi Dennis. The Shimano Calcutta reel you are working on, mimics the 700S model.
They were overly complicated which is why Shimano came out with the CT700 with two case screws, followed by the three screw model the CT700B.
Three to make one? I'd stop after disassembling the first and wasn't able to reassemble it. But that wouldn't be a learning experience or your channel name, 2nd Chance Tackle.
I'm not sure of the progression. I think one was taken apart and the others may have been purchased as parts reels. Either way, one will go fishing again. Thanks as always for the additional information not he changed between eh models - Dennis
Good evening sir. I have so many questions to ask. I live in southern California and have become very fond of reel repair after watching your videos. I want to do what you do but on a smaller scale of course. You already gave me advice on how much to charge but I have more questions. 1. Where do you buy spare parts. 2. Do you get many irate customers if you can't fix their reels? 3. How do you have time to work on so many reels? You are constantly getting boxes!
Spare parts are available through most major manufacturers or their distributors. Check their websites for the service department . If they don't supply the parts, call them and ask who they use to distribute them. I rarely get an irate customer. I can only think of one in the last ten years. I gave the customer a full refund. A lot of reel repair is setting the right expectation. If the reel is broken, you need to be upfront with the customer and give them an honest assessment of what can be done to fix it, the cost and the time it will take and to let them know that it may not be repairable if you cannot get parts. If they understand that, they should not get mad - I set aside a few hours each day to work on reels. I still manage the volumes, but some parts of the season there are more than I care to work on - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Sir, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to reply. Your videos are the best on TH-cam because they are minimally edited. Like you say, it's like being there looking over your shoulder. Some videos show the take apart, and on the next scene it is done!!! There is no way to learn from that. Keep up the amazing work!!!
Hi Dennis,
1. How could you tell which parts belonged to the reel to be repaired and which were the donor parts?
2. Were there potentially enough parts to yield two working reels?
3. What happened to the screw that you thought was too short?
Thanks!
The line guide cap and pawl and the bushing came from the donor reel. There were not enough parts to make a 2nd reel. The short screw was replaced with a longer one from the donor reel after the video was completed
@@2ndChanceTackle Got it -- thanks!
I have this same reel and am having issues with the spool. The bushing on the spool won`t go into the appropriate hole in the side plate. I think I have issues with the pinion gear moving on the yoke.I don`t want to buy a new spool and pinion gear and still have a problem. What do you suggest?
Hve you tried installing the spool in the case before you add the side plate?
If the reel was working before you took it apart, I would not buy a new spool and pinion gear.
Make sure the spool is seated without the gear side on.
If you are having questions on the pinion gears, take it out of the yoke and test for it on the spool. Slot side faces in and the slot accepts the pin on the spool.
If the pinion gear nests on the spool, remove it and install on the gear side plate and then reassemble
Try that
Dennis
What do you do?
You go get yourself a Penn TW!
Thank you
