I made baked beans (dried navy beans I soaked over night) and a 12 ounce package of bacon with chopped onions in my Crock pot last week. It came out so good, my family wants more. We had it with hot dogs (no buns). I bought the bacon when it was on sale for $1.99 a few months ago and put it all in the freezer. We bought 24 packs. A whole package went into the baked beans. I have been making everything from scratch. Learned how to make bread and pizza dough too.

I just bought 3 bags of chips and they were $5.95 each. I ONLY bought them because I had 3 coupons for $4.95 off each, so they were a dollar each. I can see them being the last chips I buy. I don't eat lots of chips, so they will last until they are probably stale.
Just wait till enough people are missing meals, because 3 meals is all that separates us from total anarchy, wait and see what people with hungry kids are willing to do for a scrap of food. It's going to get ugly and the only precious metals I'd bother with are copper jacketed lead.
I've had to greatly change my eating habits. Even the cheapest food that I used to buy is out of my price range even when they are on sale. I haven't bought Vanilla Wafer cookies in 2 years. Today, while looking at a Food Lion flyer, they were on sale for 6.99 and the regular price was 7.49! I haven't bought beef, chicken, or pork products in the meat department in a while. My diet mainly consists of p-nut butter and jelly sandwiches, tuna fish salad sandwiches, egg sandwiches, then my veggies consist of canned ones, never fresh and fruits are just bananas because fresh and canned are just outrageous. I do buy SR flour, the cheapest and make my own pancakes and mayo biscuits. I use the cheapest syrup or jelly. I do take a multi vitamin to make up for what my diet is missing. I'm 67, a diabetic with multiple other chronic conditions. I only qualify for 23.00 in SNAP benefits. That does not go very far. A 20lbs bag of rice is $11 at Walmart. 5lbs of oatmeal is $4-$5. I’d recommend that you go from there. 60 eggs at Walmart is about $10. Maybe buy a quality protein powder as well.
I think what irritates me the most is that these completely out of touch economists keep telling us inflation is coming down yet us people out here in reality world pay higher prices monthly.
During a recent ef-1 tornado in Western Kentucky, I lost $700 worth of meat ,5 months worth,in my refrigerator / freezer because the power was out for 5 days. I now only buy fresh what I can eat in one or two weeks and all of my preps are canned, freeze dried, or dried....keep stocking up!
Did you apply for FEMA? Same exact thing happened to us in Houston on 5/16. I applied for FEMA fully expecting to be denied but they cut me a $750 check for lost food. It's worth a shot! It was a drop in the bucket of the monetary damage that storm caused us but very very luckily it is all repairable and our house is fine. Sending well wishes to you!
I almost never eat out for many reasons. But especially breakfast. I can make a quick breakfast that is cooked to order in just a few minutes. I will never eat out for breakfast.
I just go without, I remember my great grandfather talking about the great depression, and my Grandpa during WWII talking about war rations. Save your money, trim up your diet, the worst is yet to come.
Good rant. I’m checking like you do. I not much red meat hamburger trying turkey hamburger there the same price now ridiculous. was thinking about powdered eggs. If you look up the price of those it’s unbelievable. I think it was $23 for a pound made me cough.
I'm eating 1x day and don't eat at all 1 day. At 60 years old, diabetic . . . It can be done. I've been eating like this for 30+ years now. Grow a container garden on my little 2nd floor apartment with a little deck, can dehydrate as much as possible . . . Things are going to get MUCH worse IF they ever get any better in our lifetime . . .
Yes a trucking companyin Texas abruptly shut down. Over 2,000 truckers, plant workers and staff will not get paid, jobs GONE. That will affect shipping. MAKING MATTERS WORSE plants that produce food located on the Mississippi River have shut down. That will affect food prices.
@mejiado If you watch Pinball Preparedness from this morning he talks about the Mississippi River and it's water level. There are factories all along the river that had to shut down because of the increased water level.
Avoid "cheap chicken". It has been for a while. Get whole chickens that don't contain chemicals, or organic. I can't tell for example if it's 15 percent or more, I don't think anyone can.
I did buy a cheap whole chicken and froze it. I thawed it out the other day and it took absolutely forever to thaw and then LOADS of water came out of it when I opened it
A lot of times they are already rotting when purchase them. Beware and inspect your produce. These companies are theives with a free pass to get away with robbing people
If you are in that special book remember a certain type of people only got to eat quail & manna for 40 years and sadly they weren't celebrating it.😢😢😢😢😢😊.
I went to Costco for the first time in a while. Food prices were way up from what I remember. Their pack of butter was 14.99. It used to be 9.99.smh. I'm cooking mostly from scratch just due to the crazy prices of prepared food. One change I've made is I've quit buying milk and started buying Nido powdered whole milk. It's more pricey, but I can mix up what I need when I need it so there is no spoilage or waste.
At Safeway in Az they had a sale on Starkist tuna, pasta, Hershey candy bars, Safeway canned tomatoes, taco seasoning , Kraft Mac and cheese and other things. 50 cents each when you buy 10! Up to 20 items. I got as much as I could.
Everything I buy is mostly clearance. Meat and bread and anything else I can find. The economy is killing my family. There is no fun in life anymore. My mom in law can't even afford cataract surgery. Life just sucks!
I wanted to make cheesesteak hoagies. I went to Walmart and found a large loaf of Italian bread marked down to $1.00. I bought it and sliced it into 4 hoagie rolls with my electric knife. That saved me at least $3.00.
I feel ya. I always bought the sales and enjoyed shopping my whole life, 45, until a few years ago. Prices were good to where I could buy a few splurge items like fancy cheese. Now its depressing getting half as much for the same amount.
@kathiholland3554 I feel you. I try to look in the bright side for myself and my family (I have no business telling others to do the same because I don't know their struggles) .. But my bright side is we waste very little these days. Cucumber and tomato feeling a little soft? That was $3 of my budget so we're eating it today!! Lol Meals are planned around produce and dairy shelf life and complainers get seconds 😉
We saw the writing on the wall 10 years ago and planned accordingly. We have been developing skills, developing plans, and growing, raising and preserving food.
Yep. Same here. We moved to a different state with much lower property taxes, many acres, we grow food, have chickens and quails. Can, dehydrate and freeze dry. We prepare all meals at home and we don't buy bottled water or soda. We filter our water and distill it. Clean and pure water.
If you are lucky enough to have a garden, plant things which will come up year after year. Today, while I was weeding, I ate several strawberries. Each year I can count on some, plus raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb, asparagus, different herbs, winter onions…. It takes a long time to set it all up but it’s a good long-term goal.
I have added several citrus trees in pots that I overwinter indoors. You can grow pepper plants & overwinter indoors...the pepper plants from which we get black pepper AND they are easy to propagate & share. Service berries are good too. I think we now have about 15 blueberry bushes, plum trees, peach, apple, pear, persimmon trees, grapes, muscadines, quince, fig trees, etc. Im adding more asparagus too.
I ask people here in California if I can get some lemons, limes, oranges or grapefruits on someone’s tree when there are hordes. They usually let me have some. Saves me money.
That's great. I see so many of my neighbors trees never being harvested. It's a sad waste. Guess they have money and aren't struggling. I do pick lemons from trees occasionally. Don't feel guilty because the owners never harvest their tree
I have a giant fig tree. I let people pick figs off of it whenever they ask. Things are pretty expensive in Nevada. You only get six figs for about four dollars.
Theres absolutely no way im paying $6 for a bag of lays potato chips or $10 for a 12 pack of soda. And i wont pay $10 for a rough cut of beef roast. And i rarely buy potatoes now because i can't make myself spend $8 for 10lbs.
Cape Cod gargantuan bag of potato chips is $3.99 at Costco. I buy like 6 bags. They last a long time even though my family of 5 really chow down on them.
We actually changed to Costco and for what we buy it's better for us. The food court has more choices. Otherwise unless we get it at Aldi, we only shop the sales. And we have lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, Asian green beans and herbs in our garden. We take advantage of our local store Senior discounts and points. Every penny counts. Stay safe everyone. 🙏
I bought strawberries at my local Foodlion. They are very pretty but taste like cardboard. They are so terrible and the squirrels 🐿️ won’t even eat them
I feel it's going to get way worse. I feel you know whats happening but are super optimistic. Most folks don't want to believe it will get worse. I ordered a freeze dryer today and can't wait to have another way to preserve my garden.

I do too as a part of my food preps to include; canned, dehydrated, freeze dried and fresh from our garden. We purchased a used generator on Marketplace back in 2021 and have the propane to keep the freezers going for 4hrs on and off intermittently for about three weeks, after that we don’t want our generator running so not to alarm the outsiders. I live semi rural NE Ohio. Going to soak our pork in homemade marinade freeze it and “when” shtf happens we’ll throw it all on our backyard smoker, then put in our dry box on our roof.

Coffee? they've been warning of poor harvests for 3 consecutive years. People don't understand there is a delay between cause and effect. Like the mortgage rate increases took a year to affect home sales. Loans harder to qualify for, sellers having to lower prices, didn't happen over night, likely to get worse
Exactly. Like with the past two economic crashes, late 07/early 08 and the 2020, people who weren’t affected right away say it started a year later than the actual crashes. The first one took about 8 years to get the economy decent and this (2020) will take a decade to get decent. But we all know our corporate overloads don’t want to get the economy decent, nor their paid politicians who keep voting against possibly helpful policies to make recovery infernally harder
Ive been stocking my coffee for some time because of this, Ive also added some freeze dried to my preps. I stocked a lot when I could afford to, now Im just trying to keep up, sooner or later I will lose that battle.
This. There is a delay between the news and the grocery shelves, but I have been slowly buying some extra coffee when possible. I do love my morning coffee.
Learn to grow, raise, and preserve your own food on any level that you can. Please don't say you live in the city and can't. My grandmother lived in the city, yet managed to raise enough food in her tiny backyard to feed herself, my grandfather, all my aunt's and uncles and their family and still give to her local church. She did that up until the year she died. It can be done, but NOW is the time to do this.

It's sad isn't it? ..., and you can't have a robust economy like this. People need expendable income to join a small gym, get their haircut, or remodel their bathroom. There's just no expendable income. For different ppl , different things take it. Ours is insurance, and elderly care for a parent.

There was a popular saying during WWII when gas was rationed. "Is this trip necessary?" I've been applying that to my daily life now. I plan all of my errands around one trip. I have a running list in my phone of things I need so I don't forget anything while I am out. My weekly gas usage has really dropped.
Here's a thought: don't shop at Sam's Club. If a ton of people shopped at the local mom and pop stores eventually all food prices will go down and it will have that added benefit of helping out real people and hurting the big corporations.
Ive got a place in a tiny country town of 350 people. There is a gas station with a small deli in the back. I go there and get a sandwich with smoked ham, cheese of choice, lettuce, tomato, mayo and banana peppers. This sandwich is so fresh and so fat it will feed 2 people and its less than 5 bucks. The meat and vegies are local grown and Im more than happy to do business there, I want them to survive as I intend to live there.
We really need to start a movement to not shop at big box or chain stores for a week! Let's put the world out, the 2 week of July, tell everyone this needs to go viral, let us make a difference! Same with fast food, everyone should have no problem avoiding fast food for a month!
I feel like corporations like Walmart are increasing prices of the cheaper food eaten by most Americans on purpose. A few years ago, organic, grass fed, and other specialty products were increasing in price but we had at least a cheaper option. If they increase the prices of the cheaper option, we are SOL.
I was actually pleasantly surprised to see lower prices on a lot of what I buy over the weekend, and I mean regular prices were lower. I'll just keep looking out for what's lowest.
Filled the chest freezer with proteins today. Sunday it will be only near 70 degrees so I am planning on a major meal prep (keep the oven/stove off in the heat) it's all like a giant game of chess. SMh
DANNO, I would advise against stocking up a large chest freezer with something as expensive as meat unless you have a back-up generator, in case you lose your power for a day or more. Random power outages are becoming more common these days, so easy to see your frozen food spoil if an outage happens to you. 😯
@@dawncrossland3028 I agree Dawn, that is true under some circumstances. Personally, I live in Arizona, where the temperatures are regularly in the triple digits. Even in milder summer climates, how long your food would stay frozen would depend on the quality of the insulation of your freezer.
Yes, really something to think about if you don't have a generator. My 1st goal when I started stocking up was to have shelf stable food stored that my family could eat that required no cooking or heating. Now I pretty much use cook up dried beans leaving a good supply of canned beans in my pantry and rotate thru the cans within 2 years and restock on sales only. Make all of my soups from scratch as well 😊 I live in southern CA so at any time an earthquake could hit & all power would be gone...😮
Thanks Danno. Be careful buying bagged produce in bulk. Sometimes they have moldy produce mixed into the container. I like to get produce where you can see all the produce before buying if possible so you don’t get the rotted produce they put on the store shelf 🤢

We spent a great deal and stocked up this past month at Sam's, but let our membership lapse. However, I told my son who is not stocked enough to look into a membership. We glean Kroger, and often Walmart, for bargains. We have cut back on a lot. BTW, Walmart still has the best price on 20 lb bags of white rice.
This year we got our highest check from Costco executive card, it was $450. That's $100 more than last year. I also stopped buying certain products that the cost went up way too much for me to consider it worth the money. I could still afford to buy those items I just refuse to. Plus I've noticed some things don't taste the same. It's like they sucked all the flavor out of them and it's "blank" tasting.
My 25 pound bag of rice from Costco is going a long way ! Pressure cook 1 cup of rice + 1 1/4 cup of watt for 3 minutes on high. After 3 minutes keep it sealed for another 10 minutes. This gives you restaurant rice for the price on spare change !
Amen to "I'm not going to buy it!" There have been a few things I'm just like NO. Specifically Avocado today, small avocadoes $.98/ each....EACH!!! NO way

I don't want to completely defend your statement because there is Greed. But this Administration has done stupid things that is "killing our dollars buying power." Just a fact. That is what causes inflation and it is going to increase because two thirds of the dollars are out there around the world. We made them angry at us so they are sending the dollars home. That means it won't buy as much here and prices go up crazy. It has just started. While the stupid has not stopped. Check your chicken packages-I’ve found some that contain 15% water and chemicals that increase the weight/price.
Avoid "cheap chicken". It has been for a while. Get whole chickens that don't contain chemicals, or organic. I can't tell for example if it's 15 percent or more, I don't think anyone can.
I did buy a cheap whole chicken and froze it. I thawed it out the other day and it took absolutely forever to thaw and then LOADS of water came out of it when I opened it
Potatoes - mashed, fried, baked. Nutritious, store well, inexpensive, that's how people ate and survived before all these food choices today.

At Safeway in Az they had a sale on Starkist tuna, pasta, Hershey candy bars, Safeway canned tomatoes, taco seasoning , Kraft Mac and cheese and other things. 50 cents each when you buy 10! Up to 20 items. I got as much as I could.
I don’t really care what brand of tomatoes I buy. I was thrilled about the tuna and tomatoes

I wanted to make cheesesteak hoagies. I went to Walmart and found a large loaf of Italian bread marked down to $1.00. I bought it and sliced it into 4 hoagie rolls with my electric knife. That saved me at least $3.00.
Food pantries. Discount stores like Aldi.
I feel ya. I always bought the sales and enjoyed shopping my whole life, 45, until a few years ago. Prices were good to where I could buy a few splurge items like fancy cheese. Now its depressing getting half as much for the same amount.

Yep.

If you have potatoes that have eyes plant them in a grow bag or bucket . You can turn 10 potatoes into 50 once their ready to pick
Cape Cod gargantuan bag of potato chips is $3.99 at Costco. I buy like 6 bags. They last a long time even though my family of 5 really chow down on them.
Wavy chips are $1.99 a bag at Kroger/Fred Meyer. That's what I get.
I lobe chips. The prices are good for my waistline because I balk at spending over 3 dollars for a small bag.

We actually changed to Costco and for what we buy it's better for us. The food court has more choices. Otherwise unless we get it at Aldi, we only shop the sales. Exactly. Like with the past two economic crashes, late 07/early 08 and the 2020, people who weren’t affected right away say it started a year later than the actual crashes. The first one took about 8 years to get the economy decent and this (2020) will take a decade to get decent. We don't hear it but OUR leaders are doing their best to make war and this time we will feel it at home here more than just sending our kids to die.
@@kencurtis2403 ...right? People immediately say, "Corporate greed". That is Joe Biden's propaganda. That is the government's way of saying, "Looky in this hand, so you don't see what the other hand is doing."

BRO - we are not coke/pop/soda drinkers. No one in my circle is. But I bought a couple of packs to have on hand for the adults accompanying their children at my daughters birthday party. EIGHT DOLLARS AND FORTY NINE CENTS for 1 - 12 case of Cokes at HEB in Houston. I had no clue. WTF lol😅 who in God's name is buying that? Sell your Coke stocks..
Funny thing...my food budget is STILL the same $1 per person per meal...been that same amount for 5 years...actually eaiser with 3 or more people...buy the sales..meal plan..and COOK AT HOME FROM SCRATCH..cheap store bread..$3 a loaf...50 cents a loaf honemade...oatmeal still under 50 cents with toppings..cold cereal $ 1 a serving..a $5 rotisserie chicken makes 12 or more meals...eating more soups/stews
Prices went up at Walmart here in the Chicago suburbs too! On “Walmart Wednesday” the store was empty. $1.83 ea for a 3” red pepper! $1.78 for a sweet potato! No loaf of bread was under $4.75 ! Dear lord, SMH.
My Chinese meal was $5.99 yesterday it jumped to $8.39 and today it was $8.99 😭😭😭😭😭 spent $40 on Chinese food. It's a.luxury to eat out now. The owner said BROCCOLI is becoming to expensive 😨
I have been stocking up on coffee for quite awhile. I currently have about 5 months worth.
Whenever there is a sale I stock up.
I bought a 5 lb tube of hamburger at Aldi today for 11.99 those big box stores are more expensive than stores w/ out membership s
As an outside walmart vender i hav seen digital tags at several of my stores in colorado springs. I remember prices too. Also a Texas trucking company shut down with no warning, laying off 2000 people and NO payckecks will be issued.
I have cut a lota the bad shit outa my house, the kids hated it at first but were used to it now. It’s crazy how the processed stuff like frozen pizzas and Oreos ect racks up the bill and provides no nutritional benefits. Its a shitty adjustment at first tho
Just checked my Sam's app, last month 88/12 ground beef was $4.38, it's now $4.58. It's still less expensive than the stores.
NOoo!!
@@dawncrossland3028 yeeess! Sadly.
Many Americans could benefit from missing a meal or two. Just sayin'.
It’s not going to get better, at least not in terms of food prices. That’s the plan, or so it seems. The priority is to protect the banking system, protect the establishment, protect the system. And what about the middle class? Collateral damage. On the fiscal side, the spending will continue. And the Fed will continue to print. That’s how it always happens.
One of these days, it won’t work any more. But until then, party on!
Car Insurance... Electric bill... I'm over it in Michigan.
I second that . Whitler needs to go
We need some fresh ideas coming from the top
Im heading to financial destruction from spending...
