Winding thread spools with your sewing machine

  • In this video I share with you how (and why) I like to wind thread onto a spool rather than a bobbin. This is of course when I need a second source of thread in the same color - like when using my coverstitch for a hem. Additionally this is a good way to wind serger cone thread onto a spool if by chance you want the same color to use in your machine.

I'm so glad I found your video because it finally gave me the missing piece in this "game"! I used a very similar method before (I once saw it somewhere) where everything was the same except of the adhesive material: it called for a piece of a double sided adhesive tape that actually worked very well for this purpose, but the problem arose when I needed to take the tape off the spool and the bobbin. It was a total mess and so not worth it. I was looking for a more convenient method for a long time and here it is! Finally. The idea of using the putty as an adhesive is absolutely brilliant! I tried it just now and it works like a charm. Thank you so much! :)

Clever! I’ve wondered if it was possible to do something like this, and now you’ve solved it for me! Thanks for your tips, and very clear instructions

Brilliant hack! I was able to use this technique to wind thread from a bobbin back onto the spool. (I wasn’t paying attention and accidentally threaded all of my thread onto the bobbin instead of half!) I was able to use a glue dot from scrapbooking instead of the putty. Thanks for sharing!

A dumb question here, but where to you get some of those empty long thread spools if you don't already have some?

I honestly don't know, I have a small stash. I use them for binding strips as well...

I found a straw that is almost perfectly the same diameter of bobbin and I cut the straw long enough above the straw lid stop and will be using that as necessary

Couldn’t you just take the screw out of the arm that holds the bobbin in place

Possibly, it really depends on the machine. My current one would not work that way

Have you found that cross winding is useful to you?

    • @rebeccassewingcorner49

I am not sure I understand the question. I find what I show in the video useful as thread spools tend to work better in thread stands...over bobbins.

@@rebeccassewingcorner49 you mentioned cross winding at about the 9 minute mark. I wondered whether you do that or if the lint issue you mentioned wasn’t a big issue for you 😊

Instead of using your finger, use a ball pen or a crochet hook etc.
