My first sports hero as a kid. I met him on 3 occasions. Always very kind and respectful to me. Meeting your hero can sometimes be disappointing. Not for me though. Great guy.
I'm bummin' today at yesterday's passing of one of my boyhood idols. Rocky Colovito. Saw him play at Tiger Stadium when he was with the Tigers. He made a throw from the warning track directly to the catcher's mitt at home plate that never got higher than 12 ft off the ground
Rocky was my first baseball hero in 1957. He was so great to us kids and a great goodwill ambassador for the game. The Rock should be enshrined into The Baseball Hall of Fame.
@@billwolcott9462 According to a sports writer I spoke to, the hang-up is his lifetime batting average of only.266. Of the 28 right fielders in the HOF, it would be the lowest, but Rocky is so solid in other categories. He has a higher slugging percentage than Reggie Jackson and few of all the outfielders enshrined have posted 1.000, .998, season long fielding percentages. His throwing arm is legendary as well. I wish he would have received enshrinement before passing.
He doesn't have the numbers. He's under 2,000 hits and under 50 WAR. He's literally never getting in. Line in Right Field starts and ends with Dwight Evans,Reggie Smith and Bobby Abreu in that order. That much is clear
Rocky Colavito, a charismatic slugger who ranked among the most popular players in Cleveland baseball history and is among 18 players to hit four home runs in one MLB game, died on Tuesday. He was 91. Colavito "passed peacefully at home today with family by his side in Bernville, Pennsylvania," the Guardians said in a news release.
a terrific ballplayer; some say a Hall of Famer. His lifetime stats are equal to some already enshrined. His last 2 years probably hurt his chances. His first eleven seasons he averaged 33 homers, 90 plus rbi. In or out, he was a great player. His throwing arm was amazingly powerful too.
Back in the old days (1961-64) in teh original Yankee Stadium with the covered upper deck; I would sit out there just to watch Rocky warm up between innings. Talk about humm that seed! Nobody on either team had an arm like his. The only other better outfield arms I ever saw were Mays and Clemente.
Although I personally think that rocky should be in the hall of fame i think what may have hurt his chances was that by age 33 he had faded badly as a player . Dont know if it was injuries or just fading skills but if rocky would have put together 3 or 4 more solid seasons that his induction into the hall would have been a no brainer
A big fan of Rocky enjoyed him a lot . Honestly he is not A HOF player . Were his stats accumulated in ten yrs maybe , just my opinion. I was born in 1947 . ORIOLES FAN ,
Think if stupid Frank Lane had not traded Rocky and Norm Cash in April, 1960 to the Tigers. We might have been spared 35 years of lousy baseball in Cleveland. May the Devil turn the heat up to maximum for Lane tonight.
Will miss you Uncle, so very much.Love you. ❤RIP
@@guidosusi9756 I’m sorry for your loss. So many people have commented not so much about what a great player he was, but what a great man he was.
Long live the king - Rocky Colovito

Wait a minute, he was my hero too. LOL, I met him at an autograph signing in Dearborn when he played for the Tigers in the early 60s.
Rest in peace Mr Rocky Colavito 🌟🌹
In 1961 Rocky gave me an autographed photo and baseball. They are still proudly displayed in my den
I had an autographed baseball 2 which I had to sell as a fool. Sad times.
Rocco !!!
He crushed it! I remember seeing him pitch in relief for the Yankees.

You can tell from looking at old footage that he was absolute stud. I hope he gets in someday.
Won’t get in because he never played in a post season game.

Always followed how Rocky did as a young Tigers fan!

Well they just put in 2 guys with less stats than Rocky, Richie Allen and Dave Parker.
@@josephshields2922 yes, two other players worthy of the hall are norm cash and frank howard

You can hear his NYC accent, loud & clear here.
