Incredibly, lead singer Suzuka Nakamoto was just 16 years old at this time.

One way to look at it: they are the only teenagers to kill it at the mainstage of a mayor metal festival.
(at least I can't think of any other)

I remember my first impression when i listened to babymetal, this band double kick pedal sounds very catchy.

Seeing this performance back in 2014 that made me realize that something special was goiung on Japan. The quality of the original Kami Band was off the scale. For the last seven years I have been following the rock/hard rock/metal bands in Japan and find it the most exciting music scene in the world. I was a teenager in the UK when the Beatles and hundreds of bands came out of the woodwork and wooed the world. I feel lucky to still be around and experience the same excitement about the current music scene in Japan. No country is keeping the flame of rock burning quite so brightly as Japan. The number of great bands is staggering, the level of virtuoso musicianship is ridiculously high especially the number of kick-ass and bad ass female rock musicians and all female and women-fronted hard rock and metal bands, they are unrivalled anywhere else in the world.

As one who was bullied through school years this song has a special place in my heart.
When Yui and Moa goes down on their knees Su sings:
    Namida mise-zu ni,
    nakidashi-soona yoru wa
kokoro no oku no heya ni
    hitori.
    Kizutsuketa no wa
hoka no dareka dake ja naku
    kizuka-nai furi shiteta
    nakama.
    I didn't show my tears,
and in the night I was about to cry,
in a room deep inside my heart,
    I stayed alone.
    Those who hurt me were
    not only someone else,
but also those who pretended not to notice.
    It was my friend.
That hits my feelings even though I've put that behind me for decades ago. Kitsune up 🤘🦊🤘🇸🇪/4

Great & thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。The phrase "Dame Zettai (= No absolutely)" is originated from police campaign against illegal drugs which had started in 1960s. So this song implies that "Ijime (= bullying)" is considered as harmful and addictive as illegal drugs. We have to continue our efforts at home and in school (and in any society or organization or group in the world) to eliminate it. In this video, I love to see the excited crowd gradually turn into enthusiastic audience. When three girls started to speak some words in the interlude, loud cheers quickly subsided and the audience even tried to listen to what they were saying although the people could not understand our language. I am emotionally moved whenever I see that scene. People in the crowd became happy, so did Kami band, and I am sure that the three girls fell asleep very happily that night after the biggest event in their life in foreign county.
Now in 2021, BABYMETAL performed IDZ in all of 10 BABYMETAL Budokan Concerts either as grand finale or second song after the opening show with Su-Metal's matured voice. It was probably their message to the world.

The best Metal song ever about stopping bullying forever. 🦊🤘🤘🦊 I compiled the whole 5 song set of this concert from various sources and put it here: th-cam.com/video/zthGYiS5JNE/w-d-xo.html

This is an interesting point. Many times I wonder to what extent all those metalheads from the Sonisphere would not be "seeing" their little sisters or daughters in those girls. I think if someone had thrown something at them they would have had more than one problem.

In 2014 Su was 16 and Moa and Yui were 15 and in the middle of their first European tour. They'd spent the previous year transforming themselves from an idol group singing to a backing track to a legitimate live act with a backing band that could play festivals and live concerts. They'd played live extensively in Japan and now Babymetal and the Kami Band were getting good buzz about their performances on their European tour and so were invited to perform at Sonisphere. They were nervous because the UK crowd was notoriously tough, but by the end of their 30 min set they had won them over completely. It's the moment that international critics and audiences realized that BM were a legitimate headlining band and not just a gimmick.
You get a bit of everything in this: Kami Band shredding, Su power vocals, Moa and Yui backing vocals; dancing, and a Yui tutu malfunction. The title takes an iconic Japanese anti-drugs slogan (Mayaku, Dame, Zettai) and uses it against bullying.

With 15 years old recently celebrated and 16 yo they're already dominating a 60k crowd, how insane is that?
A wild Europe tour for them, but they didn't realize about this turning point at Sonisphere until later on.
The way you hedoban with this one must be proud motive for Fox God, awesome! \m/
Now i remember you told us you've been there, right? Man, how bless you are by Kitsune-sama.
See you next time with more BM songs \m/

The single was first announced after the concert Legend "I" at Shibuya O-East on October 6, 2012. An early version of the song can be heard in a video uploaded to the band's official TH-cam channel entitled "Babymetal - My First Heavy Metal in Tokyo 2012", which also features part of a live performance of "Iine!". On November 8, 2012, an official trailer for the single and accompanying music was uploaded to the band's official TH-cam channel. The trailers, along with a live performance at Sonisphere Festival, subtitled the song as "No More Bullying" and "No More, Bullying, Forever", respectively. An interview with the producers of the band was published in the December issue of Marquee to promote the single's release in January.
The single was released in four versions: a standard edition and three physical limited editions, "I", "D", and "Z". The DVDs included in the limited editions contain either footage of the music video for "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", or of a live performance by Babymetal. The single also had a promotional release to customers who purchased tickets to live performances of Legend "I", "D", or "Z".
Unlike previous singles released under Juonbu Records, no songs from the single appeared on a Sakura Gakuin album, due to "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!" having been already released the same school year.

IJIME, DAME, ZETTAI (Bullying, No, Absolutely)
    [Rururu...]
    [Ah.]
Dreaming, I couldn't have even it.
Between the light and the darkness, I stayed alone.
Those who got hurt were not only I myself,
but also those who kept on watching me. It was you.
    Confidence, [Have it!]
    I couldn't have. [Don't be beaten!]
I kept on hiding [I dislike to be found!]
    until yesterday. [Yesterday is gone!]
But good-bye to yesterdays' myself. [Bye-bye!]
    Bullying. [No!] Bullying. [No!]
It's disgraceful. [No! No! No! No!]
Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone,
and we all get badly hurt.
    Fox, [Fly!] Fox, [Fly!]
I'm sure you can fly. [Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly!]
Let your pain and sadness all go outside!
It's OK because I'll protect you.
I didn't show my tears, and in the night I was about to cry,
in a room deep inside my heart, I stayed alone.
Those who hurt me were not only someone else,
but also those who pretended not to notice. It was my friend.
    Nothing [Nothing!]
    could I say. [Say nothing!?]
I was about to give up [No easy throwing out!]
    until yesterday. [Yesterday is gone!]
But good-bye to yesterdays' myself. [Bye-bye!]
    Bullying. [No!] Bullying. [No!]
It's disgraceful. [No! No! No! No!]
Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone,
and we all get badly hurt.
    Fox, [Fly!] Fox, [Fly!]
I'm sure you can fly. [Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly!]
Let your pain and sadness all go outside!
It's OK because I'll protect you.
    Pain...
    Aching...
    All the while...
    Alone...
    Your heart...
    Pretending not to notice...
    Anymore...
    I'll never get away.
    Bullying, No, Absolutely.
Full of dearest-ness, it's pressuring but also encouraging.
    Anymore, anymore your...
I don't want to see anymore your tearful face.
    Bullying. [No!] Bullying. [No!]
It's disgraceful. [No! No! No! No!]
Sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you hurt someone,
and we all get badly hurt.
    Fox, [Fly!] Fox, [Fly!]
    I'm sure you can fly.
Let your pain and sadness all go outside!
It's OK because I'll protect you.
Bullying, No, absolutely. [No! No! No! No!]
    Bullying, No, forever.

I felt it was a personal tragedy for her. A fifteen year old girl that was already extremely self aware by an ocean of foreign faces, had to deal with her skirt coming apart. When you know how sensitive girls of that age are about their looks, it must have taken a superhuman effort from her part to try to ignore it and go on. But in a few frames you can see the despair on her face. What bravery!

And… that's how you win over metalheads on your first UK appearance.
Sonisphere can be a really tough crowd if they don't like you.
I can't imagine the strength of nerve it took for a 16 year old Su, and just turned 15 year olds Yui and Moa to take that stage.
And to leave them wanting more. I'm sure they made some new fans that day.
They followed this up with a headlining concert at The Forum in London two days later.
That was a classic Kami Band line-up with Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums.

Great reaction. Yes this was their first time in the UK, their first major event outside of Asia. They had played 2 small venues in Paris and Cologne in the days leading up to this (where Yui and Moa celebrated their respective 15th birthdays), but this was the big one.
No they didn't come back out despite the crowd demanding "one more song". They had been given a strict 30 minutes with no added time for a sound check and told if they overran they would have the plug pulled on them. The Kami Band went out and did a quick sound check and they cut their set by a song, playing just 5 - they didn't even have time to mark the stage properly for the choreo.
With those 5 songs they won over a crowd of 50-60,000 UK potentially hostile but mostly very puzzled and confused metalheads. Their merch outsold every other band playing that weekend (and there were some very big name bands on including Iron Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Avenged Sevenfold and others).
A couple of days later they played their first headlining show in London at the Forum (they were originally booked into a smaller venue but it sold out so fast they were relocated - and the Forum sold out just as fast again).
Even in a recent interview Su-metal said about how this performance at Sonisphere was so important and how it made them feel they had been accepted by the metal community. She said how they had started with a sea of puzzled faces and just the front rows jumping and joining in and how it looked like a wave spreading out and away from the stage as more and more of the crowd started to do the same the longer the set went on.

*Copied from the original video, but i thought i'd share on the info*
OK, some background. The song title actually means "No More, Bullying, Forever". It was the ending song at this show, where they managed to turn an epic FAIL into an epic victory.
    - This was their first tour outside of Japan, and their first UK show
    - They booked a small stage but, for an unknown reason, they were moved to the main stage at the last minute. Instead of 3-5 thousand of their loyal fans they faced 30-50 thousand (?) trve metalheads.
    - This was a crowd waiting for Ghost, Deftones, Anthrax, and Iron Maiden. 90% of them knew absolutely nothing about BM.
    - BM released their debut album just a few months before. All the above mentioned bands had several albums and decades of history behind them.
    - They were girls between 14-16, all their songs had backing tracks, they sang not in English (the only other metal band that could get away with it recently was Rammstein). The backing band was made up of session musicians. The girls were singing about chocolate, and they were playing hide and seek on the stage, literally. They already had their own made up religion about the Fox God, and their hand sign was mocking the devil's horns.
    - This was NOT metal at all. They were nobodies and they didn't belong on the main stage of a metal festival. But, they knew it well, and they expected to get booed and bottled. There's a backstage photo of the girls before the show and their faces read "WE ARE F*CKED" And they went on the stage and Yui's hoodie got stuck in her hair, Moa's headset did not work and she missed the opening moves of the choreo. There was a close up of Yui's face on the projector screen at this moment, she saw what was happening, and for a moment her expression was like "ok, forget it, NOW we are f*cked..."
    - You can see in your video that Yui's skirt also started to fall apart at the last song, IDZ.
    - So what else happened? The crowd got a taste of the band at the soundcheck and they loved it. Then there was an epic (or ridiculous ?) Star-Wars style video intro showed on the screen. The first song started and 30 seconds later there were moshpits forming. In the next song, Gimme Chocco, there was a call-and-respond where Su effortlessly made the crowd sing the chorus in Japanese. Next came the solos and everybody shat themselves. Then the song titled Catch Me If You Can, then their women-empowering song, and then the ending song you saw. The biggest circle pits and WOD's of the festival.
    - Everybody was talking about them, and their T-shirts were top sellers even two days later.
    - If there's an epic entrance to the genre, this is it.

Not really: in October 23, 2012 they performed at the Anime Festival Asia in Singapore. That was the first performance outside Japan :D
And in 2014.07.03 Live Music Hall Cologne Germany
and in 2014.07.01 La Cigale Paris France: this 2 where performed just a few days before Sonisphere (2014.07.05) and these should be the first performances outside Asia. Iirc Sonisphere should have been the first METAL FESTIVAL performance outside Japan.

If you look closely you can see in Su's eyes she knows they got this! This was their breakout performance!! About 3000 were hardcore Babymetal fans were at the front, from there it was fans of other bands and some who stopped because of the Kamibands sound check. From backstage they could not see the crowd, they thought no one was there to see them.
There was no encore, the set was 30 minutes and they were at the bottom of playbill. BUT the Music Press blew up and somewhat made fools of themselves trying figure out 3 teenagers could do that.
The full performance (30 min) used to be on TH-cam.
Think about those old metal-heads who had no idea who they were. An awesome band opens and then 3 teenage girls come on stage IN TUTU's and start singing and OMG dancing. Those old metal-heads never knew what hit them.

    Excellent reaction, thanks!
They totally killed it and it's amazing how they left the crowd asking for more as they walk off the stage.
I've watched this one so many times and there are to things that gets me every time. One is that little moment when Su looks to the crowd as they are moshing in circle pits and so and she smiles knowing she has won... just before getting back to full metal mode. The other cool feature is that key change near the end of the song with Su and the whole band at 100%. Just epic!

Good night. Good reaction. Sorry for my English, I'm writing to you from Spain and I'm using the google traslator. Let's get back to the background, because I think you have just seen one of the most important concerts of Babymetal and, surely, of its fans. Babymetal was born to a larger idol band called Sakura Gaukin. Within this band, which represented the Japanese high school, it was made up of the classic clubs of that country. And Babymetal represented the Heavy Music Club. They started at 12 and 11 years old. Babymetal had an unexpected success during their membership of said idol group and, when SuMetal turned 15 and had to leave the group, KobaMetal decided (and convinced Amuse) to continue the group independently. The bet was risky, of course, and nobody knew if it were the group of teenagers who followed Sakura Gaukin, there would be room for a group that mixed high, a priori, totally incompatible like metal and jpop. The thing is, it worked and his music began to play a lot in Asia. With the arrival of Gimme Chocolate on TH-cam, Babymetal went viral and caught the attention of European producers. The producers of the Sonisphere invited Babymetal to participate in the festival, placing them in one of the smaller stages (about 5000 spectators). KobaMetal wasn't entirely convinced, but finally decided it was a worthwhile opportunity. This is how our girls faced for the first time a festival outside of Asia, where they were already beginning to emerge, to face a group of metalheads, who surely had never heard of them and less heard something like what they brought. Fate wanted Gimme Chocolate to be a bombshell and encouraged the producers to take them to the main stage with more than 50,000 metalheads with a reputation for dispatching in a very unpleasant way what they did not like and that would later play on that same stage Metallica (I think I remember) . Su in an interview said that they were terrified by the two possibilities that could be given. The first they feared was that when they came out there would be no one and the second that their music would offend the western metalhead and they would have to leave the stage under a shower of nasty things. Let us note that in this concert Su was between 17 or 16 years old and the rest 15 years old. They came out and the rest is history. They triumphed, they were the group that sold the most merchandising and launched them towards stardom in the West.

Imagine you're a "trve" metalhead, & you're hangin' with 50,000+ other metalheads at the Sonisphere Festival, UK in 2014. You & your like-minded elitist metalhead pals are just waiting for the over-hyped, viral driven, children's group, BABYMETAL, to take the stage AND SUCK! Revealing to the world that there's nothing metal about this J-pop kiddie band who have made the serious error of mocking REAL metal. You're just moments away from being vindicated in your preconceived notions at which point you'll launch your water bottle (now filled with urine) at the stage to show what you & your gatekeeper metalhead friends think of the travesty known as BABYMETAL. But before you know it, 5 songs & 30 minutes have passed & you've been MESMERIZED, CAPTIVATED, BEDAZZLED, & TOTALLY SMITTEN by these 3 "kawaii" powerhouses & their mega bad-ass band of KAMI's! Moreover, you find yourself leading the metal horde in chants of "WE WANT MORE!! WE WANT MORE!!"
This performance at Sonisphere 2014, led by our fearless Queen, Su-metal, was a HUGE moment in BABYMETAL history, as it legitimized BABYMETAL as a quality, worthy, & exciting metal group.
*Note: By festival's end, BABYMETAL merchandise had outsold all other performer's merch. Not bad, considering some of the other artists: METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, etc.
