- Gerard Ratnam, the Head of English Desk of Bernama TV, the Malaysian TV news station started as a worker in a plywood factory flipping plywood after flunking his Form 5. Listen to his story of humility, perseverance and his willingness to do whatever it takes.
I have been wanting to interview people on their breakthroughs for some time now. I want to tell the untold stories on how people overcame tough times in their lives. I'm positive that it will be an incredibly rewarding experience for both me, those being interviewed and you too.
If you are feeling lost and unsure of yourself right now, or if you just need a boost of confidence, my first season of breakthrough will not only give you an idea, but it will also serve as a reminder that you're not alone.
I sincerely hope that these interviews will help lift you from your challenges. There are still areas to be improved for the interview, but I apply the Japanese principles of wabi-sabi where nothing is perfect. It's better to get it done than to get it perfect.
My first interview is with Gerard Ratnam, who is the leader of Bernama TV's English desk, a Malaysian news station. Gerard has been an inspiration due to his humble beginnings; despite not being able to pass his SPM (which is comparable to O levels), he had the ambition and drive to build something for himself.
This is the story of Gerard's journey into the world of work started with humble beginnings-he began in a plywood factory and later worked as an apprentice at an interior design firm, earning only RM200 (USD44) per month. This inspiring display of hard work and perseverance is something that all who hear it can take away.
His efforts to seize opportunities presented by his good friends, as well as his willingness to take on different challenges and do whatever it takes, were remarkable. He learns his way from starting a disco to learning to disc jockey and working in Radio stations to where he is now.
The key factor that contributed to his breakthrough is confidence. He dares to keep pushing his limits. He also advises not to discourage people from pursuing what they want and be supportive.
He has simplified the process of being confident in interaction as just a process of storytelling. Last but not least is to keep practising to achieve mastery.
I can't express enough gratitude towards Gerard for his unwavering support. When I discussed my plan to interview people and document their success stories, Gerard was one of the first people who wholeheartedly endorsed my endeavour.
One of the learnings here is if you have a goal or an idea you want to pursue, trust your instincts and don't let anyone convince you not to.
What are the breakthroughs in your life that got you to where you are today? Feel free to share and comment.
