    When Kevin whipped out that salt shaker it brought back sweet memories. My late husband would keep a salt shaker in his glove compartment and in his tackle box. He would go fishing and hit up any roadside stand and eat. That man could eat tomatoes like no other. Kevin, you sure put a smile and a giggle on this old lady's face. I agree that there's nothing like eating a fresh tomato off the vine. Yum!

    My Daddy went outside with his salt shaker to pick tomatoes. I planted them just for him. After he died in 2000, it was years before I could grow tomatoes again. I now plant them with joy in my heart. I remember his smile as he relished those tomatoes. I do not like raw tomatoes, but I do like knowing how my food is grown. I will get overwhelmed soon, as the fruit is getting closer to harvest. I make a ton of red salsa and salsa verde, canned tomatoes... (you know, all the things) I am already roasting my peppers and freezing them for when the tomatoes and tomatillos start coming inside. Even did a batch or cowboy candy because the Hot Wax and Early Jalapeno are insanely productive! I can not wait to taste a Sugar Rush Peach (this is my third year trying to grow them, first year I was able to get any germination). I have 6 Sugar Rush Peach plants thriving in the garden.

    I live in Southern Ohio, and I pulled last week first red tomato. Yay! When I was growing up, mom told we girls to go to the garden and pick two tomatoes each. She met us on the front porch with the salt shaker. 😊 We had tomato juice running to our elbows. After I was married, I would find my husband sitting on the edge of the garden with a salt shaker in hand eating cherry tomatoes. Good memories.

    Thanks for the tour, update and encouragement! 😊 Watching these huge gardeners bring in the produce, and preserve, admittedly, I felt a little jealous! But, the LORD 😊 He showed me a different way of seeing things. My garden is small, and I don't get bushels of anything- yet. As I was picking my little strainer of tomatoes, a few days ago, I had the thought of weighing them, which is something I hadn't done- well because it's just a little bit. So, I weighed them. Then I wondered what would these have cost me, had I purchased them from the local grocer? I only grow heirlooms, and our store sells heirlooms. WAIT, that little bit would have been SIXTY FOUR dollars? That is when I realized, I had not been paying any attention, to anything. I would have dropped 64 bucks over the course of a couple of weeks, and not thought hard about it, because, we needed tomatoes. I have since got about 14 EXTRA half pints, for another day. So, it's true, "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” 😊

    • @lisagrafton2529
      @lisagrafton2529 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to put up a sign at the end of your driveway, and sell those tomatoes! $64 for very minimal work? You could make $$$ on that, with just a few more plants! Even better, if you live near a big city with nice restaurants! Charge them double!!

    I grew a super small tomato last year called micro tom tomato from seeds that my daughter gave me as a gift. The seeds came from a catalog called Totally Tomatoes. The plants were only 6 inches or so tall and the tomatoes were maybe a third to a half the size of a grape. The plants I put in the garden were quickly overgrown by the other tomatoes. I left one indoors which produced tomatoes for a couple of months. The taste was ok, but definitely a novelty.

    Years ago, one of my daughters brought home a Dixie cup from scouts and said she had planted something in it but didn't remember what. I gave it a little drink and set it in a south window. There it was pretty much forgotten.
    A couple weeks or so later I noticed it and gave it another little drink, and then forgot about it again. (Still not sure what it was) After another few weeks I was sure it was a tomato plant. It was only about four inches tall, but loaded with bloom.
    Now it had my attention. I watched as it put tiny tomatoes on and they ripened. As I harvested them, I would measure them with a dial caliper, write it on a piece of paper and take a picture of it. (I wish I still had those pictures) Those tomatoes were so small, I actually fit 15 on a teaspoon in a single layer. I wanted to get hold of Guinness but had no idea how. Back then, not everyone had a computer like now days.
    When we ate them, they tasted like regular tomatoes, just not much of one.

    @Kevin
    We are growing Spoon Tomatoes and they are about the size of an English Pea. They grow in a cluster like yours, but are much smaller. They proclaimed to be the world’s smallest tomato. 10 fit in a spoon. But we ordered from a seed company; possibly Baker Creek or Hoss. If I find the receipt I’ll let you know for sure.
    Your garden is looking great!
    Also, our favorite paste tomato is Hungarian Heart. They are huge and produce a great harvest.
    Blessings!

      I've grown both spoon tomatoes and currant tomatoes - I'm not sure what the difference is, maybe just a different name from a different seed company. They were both tiny - definitely blueberry size. They weren't my favorite for flavor, but they're definitely tiny and they were fun to watch grow. I had volunteers for years afterward from them. The plants were feral and took over everything - lol!

    Where and how we grow can be so different depending on where we live, I had a small farm and grew peppers in my garden they grew so well I gave them away by the big bags full, my tomatoes on the hand didn't grow well, I moved a 1/4 a mile away and here my peppers don't do well, my tomatoes really love it here and I give away bags of tomatoes to friends and family such a short distance and such a big difference. So my take on this you know your land and your plants don't worry about what others say, plus you probably grow more than any of us, I am 68 and have had my own garden for over 30 years and I am still learning, I grew up on a farm and we raised and canned our own food on my own it is totally different.

    Living in the city I can’t garden at all, wish I could. But I love watching. It’s my substitute. I also have memories from many years ago of my mother buying fresh green beans at the grocery store just about every week. I was still too young to go to school and would ride in the cart. She would pick out one green bean from the paper bag full that she was buying and give it to me to eat while she finished shopping. To this day a fresh green bean brings back that memory.

    Kevin, you can bag up some of those diseased tomato leaves and take them to the local cooperative extension office. Ours sends the samples out for tests for a very nominal fee. I like doing that because then I know for sure and also I can add to my garden knowledge. Cooperative agents are the best. Just a thought. The rest of the greenhouse garden looks so good! I'm really interested in following along with the container sized okra. I'm not exactly a tall person and I'm tired of getting out the stepladder to harvest the tops of the okra LOL! I don't mind with the tomatoes, but well okra is not as good as tomatoes. Happy gardening!

    Hi, I fell in love with my High Tunnel Greenhouse this year. I started tons of vegetables in it in April and I am having good luck with them and am happy about how well they are doing.

    Looks wonderful! Amish paste is a must for me each year. If the weather is good, they always produce heavily for me. Congrats on your early harvests!

    Wednesday morning breakfast with Living Traditions Homestead is one of my faves. Your greenhouse is amazing. I've been growing amish paste tomatoes in raised beds for the past 3 years and have always had a good harvest. I'm growing on a smaller scale but always make enough tomatoes sauce for our needs. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
