    I might have to look in to making some in 3.5 for my Doris and Evening Star

    Amazing! This has really opened my eyes to 3D printing in model engineering at home. Watching you "persuade" the tyre onto the wheel hub really demonstrated the durability. Good stuff!

    Perhaps it is time I had a proper look at 3D printing. Looking forward to the rest of this.

    Another fascinating video, I'm not a Model Engineer ( 7mm is the scale I work in) but I love watching those who have the skills needed for live steam. Really interesting watching your 3D printing process, an amazing technology and resource.

    Excellent video Tom. I too have experimented a bit with 3D printing for wagons in 5” gauge, but not on such a big scale. Tried fully 3D printed buffers with 5 ba screws and century springs fitted afterwards. Found though that they don’t fair too well with ware and tare. Likewise with 3D printed axleboxes wjth ball race skateboard type bearings. With my 4 year old daughter riding in the 4 wheel wagon the boxes have deteriorated. I intend on replacing them with new dummy 3D printed boxes and steel keeps in behind to house the axle box and run up and down the steel W irons. Keep up the great work Tom. Your videos really stretch across the many facets of model engineering. Regards, James from Australia.

    It is an amazing thing how accurate the finished pieces go together. We are drawing and printing a 2.5” Ayesha and the front bogie and chassis components are such a perfect press fit. It quits possible we could print the whole loco in parts and electrify it. Be you have never seen a yellow PLA Ayesha. 😳

    Hi Tom
    I printed the 5" gauge slate wagons which showed up in your search of Thingyverse. They came out really well. I have invested in a lot of 1.5mm plasticard to make a dummy load for the bobbin style one and have a lump of slate from Penrhyn Quarry's waste tip for the flatbed one. They too have printed tyres and steel axles, but I went mad and put bronze bushed on the pedestals! 🙂

      Yes, I forgot to mention the narrow gauge ones he had on there, as I’ve never really looked at them.

    Hi Tom, great vid . I also print my wagon’s in 5” and 45 mm / G scale . Have you tried printing in draft it’s one of settings on the slicer, It reduces your printing time. I can print a 5” scale wheel in 1 hour 48 complete. I use a Prusa mk 4 and the prusa slicer. See you in the next vid, look after your back .👍

      It’s not a setting I’ve noticed in the flashforge software, but I haven’t been using the fastest setting. It’s amazing how the scale makes a difference too, have set up some of the files for 3 1/2, can print all 4 wheels in one go as they’ll all fit on the bed together, think it said about 3 hours for the lot…

    Hi Tom,
    looks great!
    Maybe you could print the updated frame at an 45° angle. It wouldn't be the best option strength wise and you would wast a lot of material on supports, but maybe not as much with tree support in Prusa slicer or Cura. Kind regards Felix

    • @TomsWorkshop42
      @TomsWorkshop42  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good idea, I hadn’t considered that… I may experiment, unfortunately I sometimes have issues with the tree supports as the second nozzle catches sometimes and can break them as they get a bit taller.

    Wow! the age of the 3D printer is maybe a great draw to younger folk to come into model engineering. Quick question: what are the wear quality of these parts? thanks again for your hard work and hope the healing goes on as it should do.

    • @TomsWorkshop42
      @TomsWorkshop42  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What do you mean with wear quality? I haven’t done much running with any so far, but not noticed any wear. As the axles and bushes are metal, they get the most wear, but should be fine. The tyres are the bit I expect to wear, but haven’t seen anything yet.

    • @TomsWorkshop42
      @TomsWorkshop42  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve heard some say it does, some say it’s ok. As it will be stored inside other than when I’m using it, I expect it to be ok. Could always print in ABS to overcome many potential problems.

    Having watched this I'm having a go at making my tender for Speedy, bought myself a printer and I'm part way through the production process.
    At about minute 14 45 sec is the time my wife would have been in to say "what the bloody hell are you doing"?
    Would you recommend steel tyres in preference to the plastic? Or given that I'm not going to be running huge amounts of time is the plastic easier to do and not worth the extra trouble of doing steel or cast tyres.
    At the time of writing I'm doing a wheel.
    Take care with the back.

    • @TomsWorkshop42
      @TomsWorkshop42  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi.
      I don’t think she was in the house when I was knocking the tyres on… lol. As for material, I figured for the amount of running I expect this to get, plastic should be ok, but I’ll keep an eye on them once it’s in use. Obviously the plastic tyres are easier as they are just printed, however if it used metal of some sort they would need to be machined, which would take longer and be more effort. My thought was if I need to print and fit new tyres every few years, that’s not the end of the world, but if they wear out too quickly I could look at a different plastic, or I could look at making steel tyres, either options can be fitted at a later date.

    Looking good Tom. That design is far from perfect, made it when I didn't really know what I was doing, Still don't! the second fraim is much better in my option, scale and function, but I haven't had time or motivation to work on it further. I'll upload all the raw fusion files at some point to let people run with their own version, Maybe we can even mod it to fit on your printer!

      Thanks mate, yeah, it was a pain it didn’t fit, but then I haven’t got around to doing another 5” yet. Have started slicing files to do a 3 1/2, can’t work out how all the bits go with the springing etc yet, not really looked much though.
