Amtrak’s California Zephyr: America's Most Scenic Train Journey [S2: E08]

Amtrak’s California Zephyr treats passengers to stunning landscapes that absolutely no one else gets to see! The line the Zephyr travels over passes through some incredibly remote and inaccessible areas, particularly in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
We embark on an awe-inspiring 3 day, 2 night journey from Chicago, Illinois to San Francisco, California over 2,400 miles to the west.
We took the California Zephyr from Chicago's Union Station and went 2,400 miles west on an amazing three-day and two-night trip. As the train departs, the Chicago River and downtown Chicago are visible to the passengers.
Soon, the train leaves the city and crosses the open prairies of central Illinois, southern Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado. The next morning, the train arrives at Denver's Union Station.
After Denver, the California Zephyr climbs the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, going through resort towns like Winter Park and Glenwood Springs as it follows the Colorado River.
Soon, Eastbound and Westbound trains will pass each other high in the mountains. The train continues along the Colorado River as it gets bigger, leaving the Rockies behind. After dusk, the train enters Utah and arrives at Salt Lake City (typically before Midnight).
The train spends most of the night leaving the salt flats west of Salt Lake City and heading into the Great Basin in northern Nevada. In the late morning, the train arrives in Reno, the gateway to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Early in the afternoon of the third day, the train goes through the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains, gradually going downhill toward Sacramento. A couple of hours later, at about 6 PM, the California Zephyr arrives in Emeryville. We liked this trip on America's most scenic train ride.
