The speech between Putin and thd leader of Belarus stating that Zelensky is not recognized as the legitimate leader ,does a number of things: they do not have anyone to negotiate peace .....it increases the likelihood of a coup in Ukraine over throwing Zelensky, it gives Russia the excuse to continue the war, and it helps divide the EU , NATO, and UN members to either further escalation or towards peaceful end to this conflict

Not the best interpretation of events. EU and NATO are actively against Russia and have been for the duration of the war, they don't care much whether or not Putin thinks Zelensky is legitimate. As the other guy already said, it is kind of normal to postpone elections because of the war. However, apparently Zelensky's support among the people is dropping, but that is not just because of elections. He has been losing support since, presumably, people have less faith in victory than they did before and are getting tired of the war.
Russia doesn't have an excuse for but a reason.

To summarize, positional fighting in the south, Russians on the defensive in the Kharkov direction, and either a feint or an actual build up for an attack in the Sumy direction.
I think the Russians have been conducting a reorganization/rotation of units which explains the slow down of their units. Meanwhile, they have been inflicting grievous human casualties on the Ukrainian Army in the Kharkov direction
from the beginning the experts said that the number of russian troops on the north (about 16k) was too small to be intended to conduct an in depth push, considering also that the most part of these troops are conscripts that still haven't serviced on the frontline. The intended goal was to build a cushion, and they did. The ukrainans that are defending the town beyond a river with the bridges destroyed... It seems that ukrainan commanders never learn. Those troops will be crushed in attrition, because the logistics od supply, rotation and wounded retrieval is just beyond a fu*in river. Russians retreated from Kerson for this very reason, and they were in much better shape.
The slowdown on the Southern part is intentional, as the Russians want the Ukrainians to move more of their troops up North
Russians' final aim is to have full control of Odessa, so to reshape Ukraine into an inland country

The units that go to the front are made up of volunteers, around 1000 of them show up per day.
They are selected for support, defense and assault services.

The others vary from three months to nine months.

When I read Ukraine's constitution I do not see any legal grey zone. The martial law simply allows the presidential period to be extended, and this is also not unseen of in other countries' constitution. But if Zelensky really wanted to be democratic, he would have used the option to call for election.
Putin's move today is simple a way to put maximum attention to that Ukraine is not democratic enough to call for elections.
Assad was not afraid to hold elections, Putin held elections, there were elections in Afghanistan, and many more places, Zelensky is just a usurper!
I think it's a way of emphasizing that the war in Ukraine has nothing to do with democracy, because Zelensky has made sure there is no democracy in Ukraine.

Every armoured vehicle is bad until you have to fight it with a rifle and your own armour is a tshirt.

Given that Ukraine has had to pour troops into the Kharkov front, apparently, Russian progress in Donetsk oblast has been pretty limited.
Something not working well for Russia on the southern and eastern fronts.

@@bachpiper yep, time will tell, but it's just a gut feeling, that maybe some got cause and effect reversed, that Russia decided to open another front because advances were too slow in Donbass, due to....who knows, so much we don't know behind the scenes.
Ireland supports Russia, many of us.
What they can do It was simply to announce a minor victory along the front line. and the destruction of large-scale Russian military equipment by Western weapons.
But in the end, they still failed overall.

If you were told that Russia was in war against Ukraine, where the latter got several times Russias military annual budget in money, would it be crazy to believe that the front barely moved?
Well the war itself hardly even matters, the front is at is a political decision of the Russian government. They all but surrendered in march 2022 and could easily have retreated right up to the old borders. All just political decisions.
Ukraine will lose the war and everything before the front moves anywhere near Kiev. The war is based on troops not territory wake up. It takes troops to wage war not territory.
