This was just the video I needed. I'm looking into making custom keycaps since every single keycap set I've come across is always lacking something. Weird colors, menu key missing, weird legends on functional keys, or just plain sold out. The list goes on.
Thank you for this! I'd been trying to figure out the best method for my project and this is it! And I found that water slide decal paper is also available for laser printers.
I was looking fir a simple way ti implement my shortcuts. And you just did it perfect. Thank you for the research and the ginal product came out so good!!!
What made you discard options like Goblin Techkeys? Until I came across your video, I was pretty sure it was the best option. Maybe wanting specific keycaps or precision lateral print? Really glad I found your channel! Thought you had more subs. Thank you for the video, really enjoyed it and learned something new.
Oh my what an amazing clicky sound . Love the icons. I'm building my own character set using custom dry transfers. They're like the old letraset from back in the 80s. Apply and give each key a spray or two with satin car body lacquer. That's the plan anyway...
Hi YOHON!. This video was very encouraging for me. The idea was really successful. So I decided to try my own project. It was a very difficult process. I spent about a week and finally got a pretty good result.
well, i try using gundam waterslide decal left over from kits, it does work on abs keycaps. maybe, using the mark-setter work too. and its ceaper for about less than $10
This is prefect! Most gaming keyboards today aren't 100%, they are 60-75% so when buying custom keycaps it can be a pain to remember the original key combos for lighting control and multi-functional switches. for one of my 60%s I just gave up and kept the original keycaps, so this could be a game changer for putting the original keybinding legends onto the new keycaps
Do you think they could also be glued to the top of the keycaps? Or would that not work, because of the curve? I'm thinking of putting the waterslides on top, and then coating the keycap with a layer of transparent ... something ... on top in order to fix them in place and protect them from damage..
This my man is the most clutch thing I have ever in my life found online. Im going to try this method with some POM keycaps if it works ur getting the biggest internet highfive of all time
nice custom decals :) in the miniture model world there are "decal solutions" to soffen and set the decals for applying them to the model. ammo, tamiya, revell, vallejo, microscale, model master all have them. those might be a intersting item to use too. what is the music @4:10 ?
Damn this video was so awesome I thought your whole channel was gonna be keyboard content, flawless video man. I wish I knew where I could get some clean waterslide legend to use... I can't make my own. Any ideas?
haha thanks so much :) hmm I dont think I've seen people sell premade legend sets for ppl to download or ship..maybe there's market demand for that 👀. But if you're down to put something together yourself, you can mash together a set of prexisting letters/icons. For symbols/icons, there's a ton of free icons you can download if you seach "free vector icons". For letters, It can be as simple as finding a font you like and printing out each letter
I tried it out, these are still removable after being applied. For darker keycaps, you will need an opaque waterslide decal paper and more precise cut.
How well would these last on the top surface with a few coats of varnish spray? I know ABS melts at 105ºC, but PBT melts at 223ºC, so you can probably bake these decals at 150ºC in a conventional oven, with PBT keys.
Hello! I want to spray paint my keyboard first, so its not white. Must I use a diffrent color background in the pdf file, or is it transparent? Im not sure how it works
I love the decal idea, and I am definitely going to use it! It is a truly clever solution to a problem I have been grappling with. However, how are you getting such a rich bass from your keyboard? It sounds amazing! It is exactly the depth of sound that I am trying to achieve.
@@YOHON thank you, I was doing a deep research to find the best solution for my case and I found a solution that may fix that, which is using resin on top of it, the main problem is that that solution was used on a specific keycap which only needed to be applied on top, because the texture it gets after hardening is different (like more glossy) and that makes you applying the resin on all sides to make the texture equal. But maybe it can be avoided by sanding that glossy texture in order to make that texture as rough as the raw keycap
I just bought all stuff needed to do the same thing on my keyboard project. I was thinking how they last if the printing are on top instead of the side. Even with the clear coating spray
good luck! im not sure how long they'll last. You probably need to experiment with more durable varnishes. I think the same one I got wouldn't last very long
@@YOHON Now I got all the chemicals and waterslide paper for LASER printer. In the next few days I will try to use your method. Just to be clear: the sequence is (after printing) spraying the paper with Acrylic Spray Coating (th-cam.com/users/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbHhRSFBjcHdhZUpTdkpqeFpSZFdkNjhlUVFpZ3xBQ3Jtc0ttQVFEdVh2OXRFNnU1VWhhYXFXLXp4T0xRbXc3eHl5MUhHNy1FMXcwZGFKMUhsdmFoaEtRYTBWbWFta0FnbmhVVDBEQ2l4Qnlqc0NpTzFQWTAyRjFPaU9JMUtNZm4xa21NdUhjZDcyT1pqZ0syblVYcw&q=https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F3wXlC47) Let the paper rest for awhile, then apply the decals, and apply the Duraclear Ultra matte as soon as the decal dries. Is it right? What about to spray the coating even after the varnish just to improve the hardening and not only before applying water to the decals?
Did you get to order a full set for the keycaps? Or did you have to buy the seperate kits? Asked since I can’t find anything for a full set of Ice Cap keycaps.
When after ten hours of unfortunate research trying to find Azerty BPT keycaps, wondering how the hell on Earth I can't find any while there are loads of factory Azerty keyboards, find this video thanks to dystopian algorithms, look at my actual keyboard and understand... damn that's Logitech's technology level. e_e
I have the logitech pop keyboard I won in a giveaway, but it has too many emojis on the side when I mostly just use 3. Since the mouse also comes with an emoji menu button, I don't really need all 5 emoji keys. So, I wanted to change the function of a couple of them, and identify them with some kind of decal. Luckily, this keyboard comes with extra keys I can use to experiment. The thing is.... I don't know how to erase the legend it comes with (an emoji, in this case) and add the two keys that I need. I'm thinking acetone could work (from what I can guess from all the doll repainting videos I've watched), but... the keys are purple and i don't know if that's mess the color they come in. I could just try, but I'd like to ask first. Any ideas?
some of them started peeling and had to be replaced but most of them held on since the beginning. I doubt they would last if they were applied on the top of the keycaps - I think it's because I need stronger varnish
This was just the video I needed. I'm looking into making custom keycaps since every single keycap set I've come across is always lacking something. Weird colors, menu key missing, weird legends on functional keys, or just plain sold out. The list goes on.
This. 100% this! Bad profiles, overpriced, dumb colors, bad font, ...
I ruled waterslides out since they wouldn't withstand the constant touching, but at this position they're perfect. Fantastic idea.
Thank you for this! I'd been trying to figure out the best method for my project and this is it! And I found that water slide decal paper is also available for laser printers.
Another "printing" method I found: put a layer of toner powder on your keycap and use a laser engraver to melt the toner precisely where you want it
I hope you make more videos cuz your editing and deadpan humor are flawless
I just lust after a front legend printed ceramic keycap set from someone like cerakey

clean af but the editing in this video is especially killing me. art.
thank you so much my bro. i saw it on reddit and it still very helpful for me because make a custom keycap is very expensive in my country ^^

So much mad respect. Once my mental health either hits an all time high (or all time low) I could see myself doing this.
Love the backspace! XD
This is so clean
Would you still be able to easily remove the decals later after applying that varnish?
This is what I've been looking for

oooo yes thanks I should do more research about how those people do it.
Song is Baila Mi Cumbia - Jimmy Fontanez. royalty FREEEE

THAT SOUNDS SO GOOD
that backspace key is beautiful :o
and the whole keyboard too
also cant forget the fidget spinner, the most important part when building a keyboard
thanks so much :) never forget the fidget spinner
any good idea for black keyboards ?
Got it. Designing keycaps right now. I really liked the music you used

How can I print it white to apply It in to a black key cap?
Nice video!!
Are they still removable after applying the varnish? Does this work with different color keycaps, or is the chalky residue visible?

Are they durable if you put them on top?
With the varnish I got, I don't think they'd last too long. May need to find a way to make them more durable

so how to remove these waterslide decals?
Its pretty easy to scrape em off with my finger
I like the p and the o legends best personally thank u

If you have black keycaps? You can: (1) print in Yellow, (2) find White ink, or (3) just buy new, white keycaps
Anyone tried doing this on black keycaps with white labels?
$340 well spent XD
sounds nice!
The amazon link say, that you should "bake it in the oven with 230 degrees" after applying it. Could be the reason why they come off :)
omg how did I miss that
@@YOHON could be funny with keycaps. Not every plastic will survive 230 degree :D
