    What frustrates me about Phoenix is if they built it like a Spanish city, it would be a great place to live. Spanish cities were intentionally built with narrow streets that were easily shaded to stay cool, and are dense enough to walk or take light rail anywhere. Adopt some desert city designs from places like Iraq, Persia, Morocco, etc. and you could have a really nice city.

      Almost like perfected 1000 year old city design techniques work better than something a few goons in GM came up with

    I like to sort of follow along with these kinds of videos on Google Earth.What I have learned from this is that Phoenix has an absurd number of baseball fields.They're pretty easy to spot. What's that orange and green thing? It's a baseball field. What's that next to it? Four baseball fields. It boggles the mind.

    So the ending song is some sort of topical 70s comedy song about Nuclear war. It's interesting that in the 20th century people were idealising those very neighbourhoods this series criticises. And when they imagine the horror of a nuclear bomb being dropped on them, they would have imagined an idealistic version of that car centric society being attacked and destroyed. It was a pathological fear of the other manifested in a cold war.
    But this series shows how it was those very pathologies and ideals that we clung to that is leading to suffering and death.

    • @newpractice

    5:39 But what surprises me is why are the cities in the north of the USA massively losing population while the south is simply exploding, i.e. cities like me Houston or San Antonio or Dallas or Phoenix sometimes have twice the number of inhabitants or even more than 20 or 30 before years.
    But cities like Detroit that have only half the population and even Chicago is losing population every year, Chicago used to be over 3 million, now down to almost 2 million people, Philadelphia too, why is that?
    especially when it is so unbelievably hot down there, in cities like Houston, Phoenix or Arizona New Mexico etc?

    What are some examples of well built cities in the South West, or West in general. I feel like most cities west of St. Louis suffer from a lot of these issues.
    I live in Denver CO, which has a lot of pros (old well built buildings, some walkable areas, good amount of urban trees), but still suffers from a lot of sprawl and overpriced PT.

    • @newpractice
      @newpractice  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PT?
      i really don't know if we have that many cities that meet our qualifications for "well built," i'm sure the closest ones to that are really old, like in new england

    Pheonix is the worst 'city' in the southwest. Why would anyone move ther. Tucson looks a lot more lively than Pheonix. Ps. Los Angeles (the city) is actually moderately dense and 80% urban. It's only the inland empire and very suburban parts of the SGV and Orange County that's low density suburbs. Ofc the high desert """cities""" are the worst when it comes to low density sprawl they even make Pheonix look dense
