    🔷 ABOUT US 🔷
    We're a DIY family building our "forever homestead" from 15 acres of raw undeveloped land in Tennessee. All of our content is family friendly and safe for everyone to enjoy.
    In this video I frame up our doorway and show you how to add a door to an existing wall when it's already been framed and installed. I also come up with a fix to a problem with my roof rafter bird's mouth cuts... all in preparation of installing our wood T1-11 siding next.

    New subscriber, just wanted to let you guys know I enjoyed watching your video. I have built a few buildings before, so it's fun to see how others do it. You sound pretty knowledgeable about what you are doing. I always used cheap(er) clear plastic to throw over the subfloor until I got the project closed in. Thanks for adding the bloopers at the end. You got to keep your sense of humor to make life enjoyable.

      Welcome to our channel! Thanks for the kudos, too. I did the plastic sheeting once on a building but it ended up holding water below the plastic and on top of the flooring and I had to rip it up to dry it out. Glad to have this one covered now though! :)

    When I built my workshop last year, I also decided after the fact where to put my door. Walls are 2’ on center, so like you, started with a 46” wide opening. I used a 36” steel door that I found at the Restore, so I had to downsize my original opening. It was my first time starting with just a slab - a lot of work, but it turned out good. I did consider building my own door, but wouldn’t have saved any $$ or time since the slab was just $25.

    • @GreenAcreHomestead
      @GreenAcreHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very cool! I'll be building my own door, but it will be of "shed" quality -- made from the siding that is cut for doorway and some other lumber.

    When you build the house you can use half inch foam board instead of plywood in your headers for a thermal break. As the ply is just a spacer and the 2 bys carry the load around the door opening as you speculated.

    Hi Sam. I've just built a workshop/shed in my back garden here in England. I did the same thing with the birdsmouth over the double top plate. In order to get the OSB sheathing on the walls I ended up kind of extending the birdsmouth with a multi-tool so the OSB slid up into the notch. That worked out really well, in fact sorting out where my original birdsmouths were sometimes a few millimeters too big.

    How about just cutting the thickness of the siding on the bird's mouth. Or, you can notch the siding to fit. More work, but very satisfying, and you can film it, too. WIN WIN! And look at the lumber you'll save!

    i haven't seen you for a while, that being said because I haven't seen you for a while being an old nurse I noticed a difference that makes me worry a bit.....you are much more breathless, and your color is different, sam have you been to the doctor to check for diabetes or and iron deficiency? none of my business, but I do want you all well hearty and whole....I am praying for the best for you and your family.

    • @GreenAcreHomestead
      @GreenAcreHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No way of knowing if you're the first to notice or just the first to comment, but your observation is very pinpoint and accurate. :) I've actually been off my supplements for a bit over a month and have an appt coming up this week for more lab tests to be run to assess if further diagnostic tests are needed. Iron deficiency anemia runs in our family, so I have been on iron supplements for a while. But this (new) doctor wants a baseline check without supplements to check other things. I have noticed a big difference since stopping the supplements. :-\ Here's hoping answers are found out this week and it's nothing to require further concern or procedures. Thank you for your concern, it is kind and welcomed.

    • @GreenAcreHomestead
      @GreenAcreHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You're very observant... I really don't second guess myself that much in real life, but have evolved into coming across that way in videos due to the amount of flack that is thrown at us on social media. This channel is 6 years old and my workshop channel is 3 years old. Across the two, the amount of junk that comes across every day apparently affects how we present things. It's easier to play the novice vs. coming across as a know-it-all or being snobby to people. We take full liberties of our "block user from channel" functionality, but only for the worst of the worst. You're a channel member, so you've gotten to see the sneak peak of siding! ;) That video will be edited very soon and released early for members too. So not very long... Thanks as always Darlene!

      We travel over for work trips on the warmer days. :) Right now highs in the daytime are in the low 30s (-1 C) and lows at night in the 10s (-12 C). When it's that cold, we tend to do day trips over to work during the day and go back home at night. That being said, the forecast shows warmer temps coming back to the region in a few weeks to average daytime highs in the upper 40s (5 C) which will be nice work weather. :)
