Grass clippings are sold in bales here in the USA specifically for geriatric horse feed. He's saving money and using a resource. Thanks for the concern though! 😊

We were wondering what you guys do in the winter when and if you have snow for the chickens and the compost? Any tips or someone you can point us in the direction to? We live in Southern New England.
Justin, in all your homesteading and permaculture programming, may I make a suggestion for a family outing? Just on the east side of Asheville is the very small town of Swannanoa, halfway between Asheville and Black Mountain. Out in the environs of Swannanoa is a little known NC college - Warren Wilson College. This college has a wonderful heritage of having started as a farm school for boys where they could utilize their homesteading practices to earn a high school diploma. Now a 4 year Liberal Arts college, it still maintains its farming background and has a lot to offer in the way of learning about farming, organic gardening, beekeeping and a plethora of other useful talents. Each student works on campus 15 hours a week and that helps with the room and board portion of their education. I really think you would enjoy seeing a place that had honored and utilized homesteading values for well over 100 years. I believe they may still have a 2/3 program with ASU and/or UNC in engineering. As an alumnae, I think you would at least find it a wonderful Rhodes trip, but maybe also as an educational avenue for your boys.

Egg Drop soup!! I'm always looking for what to do with extra eggs.. I love that you coop is right next to the garden.. We're going to be building a new coop area and may have to really change it up as this looks so very convenient and efficient!..
Dirty eggs are an excellent source of on farm feed for the livestock. Kids exposure to the farm helps build their immune system. Buy the book at www.Homesteadbuilds.com and you won’t have to clean out another coup ;) Take it or leave it :)
I think the coop in the video is way too open, unless he covers some of the openings during the winter. Even in Texas it can be 20 degrees or less in the winter, so I like to have it a little more enclosed.
You adjust it for your climate.... He doesnt get heavy snow.. In winter you move your chickens else where or cover. Remember.. his other chickens are housed in the high tunnel during winter...........
Chickens have fluffy feathers and do well outside. In my area, we get -20 F in the winter. The chickens stay in the coop only when it's below 0. The rest of the time they go scratch in the snow and cluck away.
He moves his chickens into their green house/ high tunnel for the winter months. They are more or less just getting them out, I think it has been about a month.

I kind of do the same thing inside our hen house, but only once dug out the compost. (chicken poop, wood chips, and food scraps) that the chickens don't eat. If I throw wood chips inside the chicken run they just blow away. (Probably because I don't throw enough chips inside.) I am wanting to change up my chicken area, so might do something more like this. The problem with doing it inside the hen house is that it never rains inside, so the compost doesn't get the benefit of water to break it down, thus making it create a lot of dust if I do try to dig out the compost.
I really like having a coop and a chicken run I can walk right into. My chicken run has a roof of chicken wire. I like to be able to walk right inside and pick up eggs that don't make it into the laying box, which they rarely do because chickens sleep and poop in the laying boxes instead of laying eggs.
Great question but no. You come out of the house, weed the garden on the way to chickens, do the chicken chores and get some eggs, on the way back pick some fresh greens to go with your eggs for breakfast. It’s a flow thing.

Some TH-cam viewers are satisfied while other viewers are dismayed. This channel is their TH-cam paycheck. Justin has additional revenue streams from his books and his other channel Abundance+. They are not suffering in any way, shape or form. It's difficult to watch them, as parents, employ their children as either actors or props. Additionally, it's more than difficult to watch their children walk barefoot in animal waste; so many parasites from animal waste can invade and populate in human bodies. Choosing to watch their channel is an individual decision. This channel is not a good source of homesteading information, but rather social entertainment.
Self cleaning, no poop coop, dirty poop, don’t touch poop, no need to clean, self cleaning nests, buy the book, build the no poop coop….we get it. What I don’t get is the amount of eggs you toss because they’re not perfectly clean, but the kids are barefoot in the poop and then in the house.
@@Peabody53 I would say differently. Look up the concept of Modern foot binding. Large scale commercial shoe productions is terrible for human feet. Now if cobblers were still wide spread, I would agree with you, since besoke shoes are so much better. but cobblers are a dying breed. Barefeet or very minimalist shoes are shown to be better for actual proper foot development. You can also read into long distance runners from Kenya and there is an ethnic group in South America that are also endurance runners. Plus humans have been surviving thousands of years to this day farming barefoot still. The only concern is stepping on nails like their mom, but thats also means needing to keep the farm tidy for safety but they have construction going on.
As a 64 year old I still wear shoes only in case of emergency - outside only when terrain is so rough or it is so cold or hot that my feet can get injured; inside in winter I am on socks, with thin-soled slippers added when very cold. Born with too flat feet, I have never visited an orthopedic surgeon in my life, and they still look like the ones my mama gave me.
Only problem I had was the compost never got hot to kill the weed seeds and had grass growing in my raised beds. Was easy to weed but might not have been a problem if I had mulched asap But didn't due to seeding carrots
I would looove to have a pretty chicken run and coop for the compost. We have found that we need to get the chickens out of the paddocks in winter. So we are using the poultry fence to make a run and will do the deep bedding by our garden. Very excited!

I hate to say this... but its considered a toy in the USA. It doesnt hold any significant other than its was probably $15 at most and the kids toss it around. IN your country it holds more value and is made to be respected. How its made in the USA .. is mass productions for kids to throw around and trash....
Cause C-Monsters are a mix breed. A Frankenstein chicken and they grow too fast. You need to dispatch them right before at right when they hit maturity. Plus if you able to make to to adulthood withouth health problems, They wont be a true cross anymore if you breed them. its a Cornish chicken bred with a plymouth rock chicken and sometimes other breeds are mixed in. The entire purpose is for them to grow super fast and get culled before 1yr Also its alot of work making sure 100+ eggs are candled and viable the entire process to hatching and getting them to hatch at once. Also the quality of the chicken.. there would have to be ALOT of culling even just by the look of the eggs. Its alot of genetic work. Same as cross breeding plants for hybrids. Its really just TOO much work if youre not a large scale producer. for a family their size and their needs of doing less and getting more as much as possible... buying chickens is the best route. Better to have a guarantee 100 chickens ( plus supplier replacement) than be short one yr at like 60 chickens instead if they tried to hatch themselves. .
Cornish cross are a hybrid of several different breeds and it's not practical for most homesteaders to have breeding operations of that scope, and their offspring don't reproduce true to type
Advisor needed. Numbers way down for a reason. I remember when garden guy did a video there. It was peaceful. It focused on the needs of the children not the other way around. People want lessons but a sense of calm. Real life is stressful enough. Every thing is about how sick they are and everyone catering to the mom. Woman are turned off by her sort of city girl attitude. But they are clueless and keep filming from this angle. Also very materialistic. People,can sense this is not a normal farm. Mom steps on a nail and is practically bed ridden. And needs to get carried. Jonah breaks his hip and is out cutting trees down and over working which led it not to heal and a limp and surgery. Not a good look.

Just fine. Down to -20f. Be careful to give your chickens plenty of ventilation in the winter, you want them dry.

Sometimes the “FREE” wood chips from the power company and other businesses are sprayed with tree/weed killing chemicals.

How frequently do eggs need to be collected? How long can the chickens be left unattended?
Eggs, once daily. If they aren’t laying yet as long as they have food and water they can go a couple days.
In hindsight, would you put the garden by the road and the chickens closer to the house? Or flower gardens by road, then chickens, then food garden?
