Thanks for publishing this interview. Excellent interview and I sincerly hope Shreyan becomes an LGM very soon and achieves even greater success in the future. He is very humble inspite of the tremendous results he has achieved so far. Truly an inspiration for anyone who wants to achieve greater success in the field of CP. Shreyan is an exception rather than the norm. I would like to add a few remarks in regards to the Indian CP scene in general. Our best students, arguably, are at par with the best in the world. In spite of that, the sad reality is we as a nation have not achieved much if we consider performance on the world stage (think GCJ, Facebook hackers cup, etc. - one will hardly find anyone who has been in the top 100 - leave being in the top 50 or so). This is in sharp contrast to our performance in Chess (another mind sport) in the past few year where the rankings leaderboard has seen a significant number of persons in the top 5/10/20 (have a look at the number of grand masters we have in the game of Chess, the FIDE ratings etc). Even for IMO, the 2024 results are just outstanding (global individual ranks 5, 14, 19) - particularly relevant since we are a JEE centric nation, we do not really have much of a olympiad 'culture', to speak about. As far as CP is concerned, I think part of the reason behind the lackadaisical performance for the past decade and a half (on the global stage, that is), is people tend to take up CP as a means to achieve a good job (probably, the ONLY reason they do CP, in most cases rather than 'one amongst the many reasons') and once they enter into a job, almost all of them (even people who are 2000+ rated) quit the sport altogether at the ripe, old age of 22-23! (Contrast this with a Belarusian grandmaster, now aged 30, contesting since the past two decades has crossed the 4000 mark on CF just a few days ago!) . Not saying we aren't passionate enough but it just feels like we are (too) job centric, perhaps a cultural thing. Secondly, a singnificant number of our top ranked contestants lack an indepth background in olympiad math (think, combinatorics - NOT the 'garden' JEE variety but a bunch of advanced topics, number theory, proof techniques to name a few) plus in depth/semester grade knowledge in a few other pure/applied undergraduate level math subjects (proof based graph theory (I mean the theory subject, the mathematical one - not the algorithmic variant (which is devoid of any proofs, mostly) that is taught in CS classes), number theory, probability, abstract algebra, linear algebra). What I mean "lacking in background" is that someone actually having solved a significant number of non trivial problems (from a purely mathematical standpoint) using pen and paper (outside of the context of CP) as opposed to acquiring superficial, "survey" grade knowledge of some of the prominent theorems (which, arguably may be enough to achieve a rating in the 2000+ ish bands, but IMO things get difficult from that point onward, which I think, explains why so many just plateau out after achieving a 2000+ ish rating, the needle literally stop moving from that point onwards, sadly). Unfortunately, it's not easy problem to find a solution to this since India is heavily JEE centric as opposed to E. Europe/East Asian nations, which has a strong math olympiad backbone so to speak (for decades and continuing) and that knowledge/advanced analytical skills transfer seamlessly when a fraction of those kids start attempting harder CP problems. That should explain why you see so many people from those geographies in the bands beyond, let's say, for argument's sake, 2800 onward and almost nobody achieves that from this country. Unfortunately, this is going to continue for years and years and years to come (with a handful, literally single digit, exceptions now and then). So given all of the above, it is great to see someone who is on the verge of becoming an LGM! Ah, why did I even write so far since (almost) no one will read (or even if they read), people will not understand anything (especially on the math part) and/or people will just don't care (maybe for valid reasons, a 2000 rating is our benchmark to be recognized on a national level, to be invited in various Bhaiyya and Didi channels to share our experiences and be role models for the next cohort of programmers who will 'compete' on various platforms). We need a great job, a "settled" life, that should be our ultimate priority, isn't it?
