How Grain Makes Wooden Surfboards

  • In this episode of Bloomberg Pursuits' MADE series we visit a shop in York, Maine. Grain Surfboards are built through an additive process that has much in common with traditional wooden ship-building. Planks of wood are cut and glued onto an internal wood frame before being sanded down to their final shape.

    Awesome and what a beautiful board,but that’s a generous use of the word “sustainable “ . We have synthetic glues , fiberglass cloth and epoxy.

    • @deadlata9767
      @deadlata9767 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fiberglass cloth is literally glass what is not sustainable about that?

    • @moffel96
      @moffel96 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deadlata9767 fiberglass on it's own is not unsustainable as such, but as soon as you soak it in synthetic ressin you create a so called monstrous hybrid that can not be reused nor broken down by nature, leaving only the landfill or insinneration which releases toxic chemicals into the air and ground. anything that pollutes the land and cannot be carried on indefinitely is per default unsustainable.

      Drawknife, get one on ebay, but as with all edge tools they have to be kept sharp, and there's a lot of edge there. Also, they're not for small cuts, nor easy to control. You need straight grain wood, strength, and practice to use one effectively.
