- Today we are baling some first crop! We are using two rakes and two balers…… At least till the very end we were. Our main baler breaks down and our small old baler will have to save the day. Stay tuned till the very end to find out how it went. Thank you all for watching!

The difference between a farm kid and a city kid
It is like night and day difference
My dad bought a 273 hayliner new sometime in the 1970s. He ran it with a John Deere 70 Diesel. I never was old enough to run it before my dad got out of farming. When I started working on dairy farms every one of them used a John Deere baler with the kicker. One of the differences if you bought a John Deere with a kicker vs one without, the left wheel is moved back about 14 inches. If you are not careful and go over rough ground to fast, you can break the bolts that hold the extension for the wheel off. Ask me how I know. Hahaha. I use a 336 John Deere with a kicker on my farm. I have pushed a lot of hay through it with very little trouble. A couple years ago I replaced all the rollers in the plunger and that was the most I had to put into it. It's paired with my 4020 most of the time. Glad you guys had the second baler to fall back on. At so point I'd like to get a 348 baler and keep the 336 on backup.

them old 273 balers seem to go on for ever if you look after them but ours used to brake a shear bolt for no reason , with the wheel axel problem cold have been a fault in the axel and also on banks it puts more stress on these machines than if your working on flat ground , we found this with our stuff but its part of farming on banks , and things always go wrong when your busy don't they , just keep plowing on
We had the same exact thing happen on our 14T gosh about 40 years ago. All there was 4 bolts and the whole assembly came off. So we went to the dealership and I found another 14T in the bone yard so I took the whole assembly off, wheel, tire and all slapped it on there. It's still on that baler and we were using it just last week. So nice when things are so simple. New Holland makes great balers too. That's what I mostly see around my area.
Made an unfortunate situation better having two balers so at least you were able to finish. Had the right-hand stub axle break on a NH 268 on a Fri eve. Went to the dealer on Sat morning, got the parts and finished Sat afternoon. Seems like wrenching on machinery is part of the game of farming. Gotta love those old "M" tractors...have a sound all their own and keep going. Don't need a modern wonder when an oldie will do the job!!!
I had to build sides for my ramp then put a blocker board down along one side . Then I would walk around the house herding them around the house and up the ramp then shutting them in . Do this for a couple days at the same time like 8 pm and they will Learn to go into their house at night . I just went through this also

When I was a kid on the farm we had a 1952 super 66 New Holland Baler and we rebuilt that twice because Dad did a lot of custom bailing to pay for the Baylor and Oliver super 77 that he bought it the same time

If you are shearing bolts frequently, the timing of the chamber teeth and the plunger is likely off. We had an NH 269 that worked beautifully until one summer when it would shear a bolt every 75-100 bails. The NH dealer sent a guy out and he adjusted it and we never had another problem until we sold the farm and bailer 7 years later.
Above all else in your tribulations, you have some superior DRY hay that will store and the cows love!!! We've all broke axles like that, wish I could come pack the wheel bearings for you all. John T. Love all the milk,cheese, and ice cream.

Back when I farmed I had the same thing happen to our 273. That is when I bought my 1st round baler. I had 20 acres ready to bale. The New Holland dealer said he couldn't get axle for a week or so. So I bought a 847 4×4. And never looked back.

Hay's decent. Not a terrible load, but that's about it with a belt thrower. I remember the 327 and the 336 with the 30 thrower that would build a bigger load with stacking the front 328 with the 40 kicker couldn't build that big of a load. 210 stacked is a big load on an 9x16. No flats, but pretty sketchy getting that one home. Its creative what you can do with what you have
Maybe try adding some small wooden slats to the ramp so the ducks can get traction when climbing up? I've seen that with chickens, not sure if it will work with webbed feet.
Maybe put one of those fake owls by the pen when you want them in. Also I've seen the Alaskan Kilcher folks tie a rag around a stick and flail it in the air to get chickens to go in as they think its a hawk or something.

I think we had the only IH baler in the state , no thrower though. good old bale hook and stackem.
Always liked the sound of the Farmall M exhaust. Fourth gear is the most used gear in a M. Looks like good hay and the weather to get it baled.

Hello boys. Picked up one of those new Holland carts so you can pull two rakes at once either going the same direction or the other side for two separate windows. It works pretty darn good.

The board maybe too smooth for the ducks to walk up on.Rough up the board or put down a old piece of thin carpet. May help?? Were there any tadpoles in the water? Getting the time of year to see them?? I hated to rake hay if I was not going to run the baler.Seems like everyone who runs a baler wants it raked just like they want it.They like to complain every time you pick up a new wagon. Yes, I even miss getting yelled at for not raking the hay right.Good looking hay .Cattle should eat it all. Thanks 😊.

If you use equipment, new or old, it's going to break at some point. Some of the technology on those balers hasn't changed much since the old wire-tie balers. It is interesting to see how things change and stays the same. Thank you for sharing a day on your farm. Stay safe, and God bless.

A few years ago my brother broke the same axle on his CIH baler. My thoughts are that the axle was designed for the baler without the bale thrower attachment and with the bale thrower on the back there is just too much weight for the size of the axle. Love the sound of the IH 686 baling.

Check shiming of flywheel should be very little gap back of flywheel I always set them up so all most turn baler over empty set right will make not having to change shearbolts as often also check pin in plunger stop in front of baler there have a bad habit of kotter key falling out an bad think happen when u need itit don’t work replaced alot of yoke for needles an needles at dealer

I cannot help to laugh when those bales get tossed. It probably doesn't help that I am saying weee in my head when I see it.
Love the Ms raking personally raked with a H in the 70s and 80s baled a lot with a 273 and a 316 both great balers did about 12 to 15 thousand a year with them sure miss it great video
When you get a replacement axle for the baler, check the same region this axle broke for any sharp machining marks or tight radii -- stress risers next to all that flexing bending the bar (wider wheels give a longer wrench arm). You could try polishing that spot and the bearing edge where it could contact the radius too to make sure it's not cutting the bar. Fatigue fractures will leave 'beach marks' just like vacation spots where you can follow them back to the initiation site and figure out the problem. And Knotters, they were a bit of a bane in our operation back in the day, so finicky.
Back in the day we had a NH Hayliner 270 and had axle problems on that side of the baler a couple of times. Remember that is the heavy side of the machine then you fill it with hay as well as having the thrower on there too. We did not have a thrower on our baler but did load on flat bed racks. Our best day baling pure alfalfa hay one afternoon we did 997 in 3 hours. The 270 was a hay eating machine. Dad and I did custom baling every year and did around 50,000 per year

For someone who has livestock, bales in the barn are as good as money in the bank. Sorry to see you've had problems with your baler. I've never been real fond of New Holland balers even though I'm a big Ford guy. I prefer an old John Deere 14t, it's one of the best balers I've ever had. I've had newer ones, I've had older ones but the old 14t just keeps on ticking. Love seeing the family all working together too, that's what makes farming great.

When you first get ducks or chickens, leave them inside for atleast 24 hours then the birds know that the house is their home and they will go back in their house every nite.. I learned that from watching pete.. at just a few acres farm..channel
We used to have a new holland 276 hayliner and switch to a 570 new holland. Really ramped up our production.. amazing how far baling technology comes . The engineering in it is incredible..

We had a hilly farm to had also broken axle on the Baler pulling out onto the road baler was in the middle of the road wasn't a good day Neighbor came over and told us we were turning the wrong way we're always supposed to turn towards the pickup don't know if that's true or not but that's what he told us
For my ducks, I had to add walls to the ramp and basically 'funnel' them in at night for a few nights before they would do it on their own. They were in this pen for six weeks before they were big enough to let outside, so it isn't just imprinting. It was interesting to watch which ducks went in first or last.
They may need more grip, and eventually they may even figure out how to jump or pull themselves in without the ramp. They're pretty clever at using their bills and the hooks on their toes.

Had same problem wit ducks. Took ramp off. Now they jump up into house no problems.
While everyone was counting bales I counted strokes (tried). Anywhere between 5 and 10 depending on how thick the windrow was. Average was 7 or 8. I have a 273 and I like it!

I miss the smells and the itchyness of balding square bales My first job on the farm was riding the wagon catching the bales as they were kicked out at us. I was 8 and many of time I didn’t pay attention and got knocked off the wagon. Man those were good times. Lol. Great video. God bless.

I do. It kept the bales in the wagon, but you had to go back and throw a few bales around by hand sometimes if you wanted to get your wagon full.
Yep remember that in our 273 when I was a young kid. It was a big deal when dad had a hydraulic cylinder put on the thrower
Years ago we broke the same axle on our NH 311 that we had. Bent the shield the same way. It's always something...

Great haying video other than the baler
I had a NH baler with a thrower just like yours. I have no idea how many thousand it put up. Gave me very little problems. Nothing has changed with the knotters or needles. My family had NH baler that had canvas pickup. It had a Wisconsin motor. The knotters were on the side of the chamber not on top like they are today. The Wisconsin motor was great. Don’t let it run out of gas. They would vapor lock and you could crank for hours. Also the crank sometimes would stay on the shaft and everyone would run for cover. It would throw upwards and you didn’t want to have it come down on your head.
An IH weight box is so damn handy!
That's what 6mph does. For being so conservative in most of your methods when it comes to driving your equipment you're like NASCAR.
Hmm, no one has ever thought up a hydrostatic PTO. It would be able to run at many different speeds.
13th bails a minute you got. That's not bad at all.
About the ducks.. Get into the habit of giving them some feed inside the house at night, they cant resist that.. Maybe let them go a bit hungry beforehand so that they definately are interested when you put some in there.. After a few weeks you can probably stop doing that and will have programmed themselves into the routine..
You could try locking the ducks in their house for a day. Make sure they know that’s their house.
Happened to me last yr doing straw. Going downhill just starting to turn. Took pieces to local machine shop and they made one for $65-70. My baler's a 316 w pan kicker
Use a shelter with an opening that is closer to the ground that will be a better choice than the one you are currently using
