Not having Quake/Source in this list is fucking nuts
Edit: Now that I think about it, Roblox is another inexcusable omission from the video.
Edit 2: A lot of people feel that calling Roblox a moddable game is a strange thing to do. I honestly don’t know. Some mods are so comprehensive, that they become their own games. Calling Roblox an engine doesn’t really work for me based on the amount of reused assets. There is a lot of low level engine things are are not able to be modified in Roblox. To me, that makes user content closer to mods. They are a self described “gaming platform” so I guess they are somewhere in between. I’m super down to discuss. Let me know what you think.

I think it can't be understated how influential the Half Life modding scene has been, for both the first and second game. Not only has the modding community remained strong for the past 25 years, but some of these mods have become so popular as to eventually become fully fledged titles. Counter Strike, which currently is the most played Steam game by a mile, was once just a half life mod. Same goes for titles like Cry of Fear, Stanley's Parable and Day of Defeat were all once Half Life Mod. This modding scene was so popular that Valve ended up releasing Gmod, which was a whole sandbox game that allowed player to mess around freely with the Source Engine and Half Life 2's assets. Besides Doom, Half Life might have the most influential modding scene in history

indeed, data packs are a form of mod, but they are more limited in what they can alter, similar to how doom's wads were not enough to do everything people wanted them to without extra assistance. There is also a comparison to be made between data packs and server plugins, both are more limited in scope compared to what is achievable with forge or fabric mods, but are far more accessible as a result of that, particularly, in regards to the fact that with servers, you only need to install them on the server end, rather than on the client end, meaning that only 1 person needs to understand how it works, and you can join it without doing anything extra, just with the vanilla launcher

In the case of Creation Club, I think there is the issue of the METHOD of compensation as opposed to the fact that modders are necessarily compensated at all. Seeing a store open up filled with microtransactions imitating well-known mods gave many players the impression that Bethesda hasn't learned anything since the horse armor fiasco. If they were initially bundled together in a package like they did with Anniversary Edition, I think people would have less of a visceral reaction. In addition, there were issues with how Bethesda ran it (people disagreed about what Bethesda was paying modders, heavy restrictions on things like voice acting leading to poor quest quality, etc.) And my personal gripe with the system is that I was promised all future DLC in exchange for buying a season pass, but now apparently THIS officially licensed and released downloadable content doesn't count and you have to purchase the anniversary edition separately. Bethesda shouldn't get away with breaking their promises simply because they're being sort of nice by contracting modders for their DLC.

    • @Verchiel_
      @Verchiel_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I personally think at it's core the main issue people had was just how expensive it was an to an extent still is if you ignore AE dlc.
Even saints and seducers which adds four whole new armor and weapon sets, along with a whole dungeon with new assets along side some new unique artifacts
it's 15 bucks, 5 less than the dragonborn dlc which way outshines it in a value perspective.
While i entirely agree the way modders were compensated for it, being a lump sum instead of a percentagy of monthly sales and such.
I do think in the end it is a pretty nice thing to do as a whole. A company endorsing modders so much so they commission them to make addons for the game.
Nor would i consider the creation club content to be explicitly "dlc", more so addons as they're much smaller bits of content that usually don't quite integrate into the game like the major dlcs do. In a sense making them entirely optional and not "i need this to get the skyrim experience"
though i acknowledge that's entirely up to interpretation.

Fallout is getting conversion mods to make essentially sequel games within the game. You can play fallout 3 in new Vegas, they are porting 3 and new Vegas to 4, and making expansions like fallout Miami and fallout London. Morrowind some fans I guess remade the game in Unity to push mod support. Also not talking about skywind and skyblivion is pretty nuts(Skyrim mods being made to replay morrowind and oblivion in Skyrim engine). Also Skyrim together, a mod to play Skyrim with friends! Starfield even without access to the creation kit already has a crazy amount of mod support you can at this point turn it into a Star Wars rpg. Star Wars battlefront 2 has essentially a fan made mod that turned it into battlefront 3. Lastly elden ring, the amount of content people have added to the games, seamless coop which allows you to play the entire game seamlessly with a friend is insane. Put together with the combat overhauls and magic spells and weapons addons and it’s also in modded heaven. Not by meeting the standards but by the same reasoning as terarria

It takes on average 8,000-10,000 hours to complete, and not many people have done it. It turns Minecraft into an automation and logistics game like Factorio or Satisfactory. For example, creating a vanilla piston requires nine different steps, excluding ore processing, which is a whole different beast.

I think what really helps in a game's modability is it's art style. If you want to add a new weapon to a game like Fallout 4 you need to know about modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, and if it's animated also rigging, animation, and possibly VFX. Most programmers do not have the skills of a game artist, making it much harder to make their vision come to life cohesively with the rest of the game. However, pixel art makes this really easy, even a programmer without any prior art experience can put together something not half bad, and it instantly fits within the game thanks to the art style. This is why games with simple pixel art styles like Doom, Minecraft, and Terraria thrive when it comes to modding

There are tons of incredible mods that’ve been made from them, especially total conversion mods that either make the games much harder or turn them into brand new games. The Convergence mods are some of the best examples for this series since they add tons of new weapons, magic spells, Change up level/location layouts, and either add new mechanics to boss fights that are in the vanilla games or just add brand new fights that are sometimes so good it feels like FromSoft themselves could’ve designed them. Archthrones is another great example recently with DS3 that adds brand new levels and game mechanics to DS3 that almost make it feel like Dark Souls 4

You should try Better Than Wolves, a REALLY old, near-complete rework of minecraft made in response to wolves being added. It makes dark kill you, hunger is scary, death is debilitating but potentially rewarding, getting close to death makes you MORE likely to die, and (in the newest version of it) creepers actually explode from their center so you can't block them easily anymore. It also completely changes spawning requirements, dirt falls, dirt sand and gravel are now slabbable, and you don't even get dirt as a full block, you get pieces of dirt. You want A LOT of dirt, by the way. Nether Portals are also REALLY dangerous, not because of what is in the nether, but because of what happens to mobs around them. Chickens explode, sheep float, wolves get really mad, and squids? Squids begin crying. And Squids/Wolves have new behavior now too! Squids are neutral in the way spiders are, and they attempt to drag you into the water, which is really hard to get out of! And if they get close to you, you'll wear them and be unable to see while they eat you. They can also hop onto zombies, but zombies won't die from them. Wolves are now a huge issue, but also potentially good. Wolves drop wolfchops, which can be cooked and eaten, but doing so near a wolf will aggro them which is very dangerous. If a wolf eats rotten flesh it will undergo a transformation after ~5 minutes into The Beast with more health higher attack and all around meanness. It also adds a lot of machinery for the mid to late game, as it's actually a TECH mod first and foremost! It adds 2 forms of "power" gen, wind and waterwheels, which power axles like create does, but better. No worries about limits, as long as you can get an axle to it it's powered. The dragon fight isn't the end either, oh no, it's just the only way home with the goodies in the end! Endstone is used to make the new most powerful things after all, Soulforged tools and armor! Made in a 4*4 crafting grid, no less. But that's not all, remember how I said death was potentially a boon? BTW has a progression system, where every tier makes the radius you can spawn in larger every time! It starts off small, but eventually you can spawn thousands of blocks away! In fact, you may want to! Structures are now very good, but only as you get farther from spawn! within 2000 blocks, structures are 'abandoned', meaning villages will be empty, have no crops, and zero loot. Not even furnaces or chests! Within 3000 blocks, villages become deserted, leaving behind SOME crops and potentially, one VERY hungry villager who may leave you stranded far from home once again if it sees you. After 3000 blocks villages are full and have more hungry villagers and crops, temples have their full loot instead of the 'junk' items, and the elusive Jungle Temple houses a very useful automation tool, if you dare to brave the dangers of the jungle... The jungle now houses a very dangerous enemy: Jungle Spiders. These nasty little critters will poison you AND give you hunger! Walking on leaves also makes you VERY slow, leaving you open to their attacks. Ah, I suppose I should talk about spawn requirements and WALKING SPEED shouldn't I? Yes, that's right, walking speed. For you see, different materials now make you walk slower, like grass/dirt and gravel making you walk slightly slower, sand making you quite slow, and leaves making you walk at a snails pace. Now about spawn requirements! 1.13 lighting rules are in affect here, but blocks also change what can spawn! Nothing bad can spawn on wood, and nothing good can spawn. No, that isn't a typo. Nothing good can spawn. No passive mob spawns except upon loading a new chunk! Same goes for villagers and their hungry counterparts. Now for the special things! Jungle Spiders ONLY spawn on jungle leaves. That is their only requirement. If there are jungle leaves, they can spawn on them. Mobs spawned from spawners don't give drops unless they have lived for at least one day. Ah, a little fun fact that doesn't fit anywhere else: Endermen are chickens and will run if you hit them. Now for the nether and its FUN little quirks... Zombie pigmen WILL swarm you. If one kills you, consider you items forfeit unless you have either a bow or soulforged steel at home. The one who killed you will wear your armor and weapon, and if it notices you, it WILL aggro ALL pigmen nearby. Be prepared to die multiple times. Also, they don't care WHO or WHAT hit them, pigmen will always aggro on the player, and will remember that for a while. The nether hosts the best source of automated wood: Bloodwood trees. These funky little things will continuously regrow, providing automatic wood for you! You will need it. Soulsand provides access to soul urns, a very useful item used in many recipes, and used to cure hungry villagers. Speaking of villagers, lets talk about their trades. Their trades are painful and required. You cannot make eyes of ender. You have to trade for them from a Librarian. Librarians, are rare. Librarians only appear in villages beyond the 3000 limit. Same story with the OTHER pain in my ---, Priests. Priests are needed for the final level up trade before eyes of ender are unlocked for trade by the Librarian, an block which places blocks. Do you know what priests need? That very useful automation tool in the jungle temple. And that's just the level up requirements. Villagers tend to love selling you things for insane amounts of emeralds and giving you 1 or 2 emeralds for bucketloads of difficult to obtain items, including crops. Yes, crops. Carrots and Potatoes take 5 days to grow and only give you 2 back RARELY. This is IF they survive that long, as unless they are planted in a planter they will grow weeds that need to be cleared or they die. Wheat is worse, taking 7 days and maybe giving you a single wheat, but gives you ample seeds in return. That's all I'm going to list however, as I believe TH-cam will cut me off if I go any longer. This is your local adhd transfem signing off.

For Minecraft Bedrock, there are a few DLL mods for the server software. Most notable are BDSX (allows extending with scripts) and Levi Lamina (is similar, but has more language support. Formerly known as Liteloader BDS)
There are some instances of deeply modifying the game's code like Trapdoor mod (Allows speeding up the game. This feature might come to vanilla) and BetterRenderDragon (changes some rendering and can allow RTX. It's one of very few client mods)
Client mods are really hard to achieve and only work on Windows. Bedrock hasn't achieved modding heaven and the mods are not popular, but they are a great tool for server admins. I enjoyed making minigames using BDSX and wanted to mention it, but cannot consider it an actual mod loader, because it's kinda limited.
Modding for Java has become much easier with the rise of the Forge mod loader and everything you mentioned wouldn't be possible without it. You should've mentioned Forge, because most mods run on it.

Speaking of game overhauling mods for Minecraft that weren't mentioned, I really encourage you to check out TerraFirmaCraft, aka TFC. It basically changes the entire game to be _much_ more challenging to survive, but doing that by making the world and the game mechanics much more closely resemble the real world stone age. And, of course, many modpacks have built on top of TFC to allow progression past the stone age and even lead into other mods like the one that lets you get to other planets! Flippin' love TFC and the development team behind it
Edit: Ironically, the TFC mod _itself_ has its own mod ecosystem around it. Eg I've been helping with Blaze Map, a mapping mod that serves as the basis to Cartography, a mapping mod that specifically enables TFC functionality like ore tracking. And then you have mods that expand TFC like Firmalife which adds a lot more depth to the food growing/making/preserving aspect of the game, or something as simple as the TFC Flasks mod which just provides more ways to carry around water, or Firmalife which adds sailing ships. And these are all TFC-specific mods! I just love the whole mod-within-a-mod ecosystem that's sprung up around TFC

I really have to mention Space Engineers here because it's on the level of minecraft. You can mod the game into different genres and you have access to nearly all the dev tools.
Forge mode from Halo also needs a mention as, I will be honest, Forge is better than the actual game at this point.

Tnodloader was the first modding key, but there also were older before 1.3 update, and Thorium is based on another mod from pre 1.3 era

Half life should have been on here. I'd say nearly all Valve games (team fortress 2 / day of defeat / counter strike / left 4 dead / etc.) (and titanfall / apex legends / stanley parable / and gmod for christ's sake) started as either Half life mods, or mods of those mods. Plus the mods that are still mods, which I can't even name all of.
In fact, Valve has always been like that, and has a trend of hiring the best developers to actually work at the company.

Shocked you didn’t bring up Kerbal Space Program. In my 9 years of playing i’ve genuinely never met someone play the vanilla (or as we call it, stock) game. Additionally it has some absolutely insane mods, for example RSS/RO which replaces the games solar system and tech tree with real life planets and tech respectively, or principa which literally rewrites the entire physics engine for one that calculates real time multi-body orbital physics. There are far more of these incredibly impressive mods many of which are based in deep knowledge of real science, math, engineering and physics. The KSP community is insane, im convinced they could actually build a real spaceship if they wanted.

The TerRogueLike mod for Terraria officially qualifies the game for mod heaven, as it successfully converts the game in to a roguelike, its a fun roguelike too!

Some games are like a canvas. Empty canvas with holes and a broken frame. But people manage to work with it anyway.

I was literally thinking about this while in the shower yesterday. Like if I could make a game that allows players to make their own content to the game forever and making a vote on what mods to make into the actual game for everyone to play for free.
I mean the game would ofc cost money to play but dlcs would be free

I think assetto corsa has got to be a game that has acchived "modding heaven". The devs actively encourage modding, as a racing game its very open ended so almost anything to be done with cars feels at home in AC, and the community is massive and passionate.

I think Geometry dash should have gotten at least an honorable mention with its editor. Sure it’s editor is built into the game, but the community has been able to turn it into something it 100% should NOT have been able to do.
Back in 2.1, Serponge released “Mastergame”, a fully fledged Top down Zelda-esque RPG with its own mechanics, map, and somehow, a password save system. Later down the line, Yoreid released Floating Maze and Floating Outskirts, which were platformer levels before they were supported natively. Then Dienid’s released Abel, which simulated camera effects before that was supported, and then there was “What” by Spu7nix which is just a pure anomaly that I can’t even begin to comprehend.
Once 2.2 came out the floodgates completely opened with Platformer mode adding enough controls to make some legitimate gaming experiences. After seeing multiple metroidvanias pop up and Fnaf fully recreated in the game within a month of the update, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got GTA 5 in Geometry dash before we see GTA 6.

Kerbal Space Program deserves coverage, the mods in that game range from whole interstellar exploration / colonization experiences to extreme realism and difficulty in the real-life solar system. Noting the relative failure of the sequel to capture a large modding scene due to its lack of support and community passion would also be an interesting point of the video.

I believe another up and coming sizable modding community is the Barotrauma community, you should see into it, its slowly and steadily growing to make amazing and absurd mods for the game alike.

great video! i think warcraft 3 deserves to be mentioned in discussions like this. the game released with a really powerful official map editor and quickly developed a really passionate modding community. i don't know if it's reached the same level of "modding heaven" that games mentioned here have, but there's still been some really impressive things made in it, such as the original Defence of the Ancients map, which was eventually made into a fully independent game and literally helped to invent an entire new genre of video games.

I think for Skyrim you should've included a special factor that drives it's modding scene. That being "Horniness"

1:30 Heh, that line makes me think about the fact that Minecraft doesn't _really_ have official mod support from a technical standpoint (although recent years that's improved a lot!) but yet there's so many community-built modloaders out there that's it's actually kind of a problem because most aren't intercompatible 😅

I wonder if Vintage Story could get to modding heaven point. The scene isn't that big yet, but per their own words, it was built from the ground up for modding and the devs use their own mod API to add content, with open source modding tools and half the game under a readable source license. I'd love to see VS get the same kind of fanbase as minecraft just to see what kinds of things people could come up with.

There is another game that I think may also be Modding Heaven, Kenshi. It has mods that completely change the game from Post-Post Apocalypses to Star Wars.
