    On the FCA build quality: 1) I have a 2016 challenger hellcat also and just had my supercharger swapped out last week after the whine was starting to sound a bit suspect. As soon as I pulled out of the dealership with the new one it felt like a completely different car, even from when I first bought it. The performance with the new sc is absolutely insane. But what gets me is, when I bought the car there was no indication the supercharger was fucked. It was a tensioner issue, but still. 2) Everything with this car shakes and rattles especially if you use track mode. I hand washed the car a few months ago and noticed how loose everything was. And the water on the trunk? oh my god. 3) I had the same exact squeak/squeal at 4:15 driving me nuts for months and was finally informed it was wheel rub because I was using track mode at high speeds on the highway instead of even track like surfaces and to use sport or street instead. Haven't heard it since. 4) The vibrations have loosened the radio wiring to the point that uconnect actually changes input sources and opens the menu and other random stuff all by itself if I hit a bump. 5) Maybe it's just where I live, but the Dodge dealerships can be a bit of a hassle to deal with. I've never experienced pushback at a dealership about repairs and servicing until I bought this car. Its actually left a bad taste in my mouth and will be a major consideration when purchasing a new vehicle. It definitely is still one hell of a car, but man...

      I appreciate you taking the time to comment man. It sucks to hear you have some of the same things bothering you but I’m glad to hear I’m not alone. I had no idea about the track mode and wheel rub but damn if I didn’t just see where it was rubbing today when swapping the brakes. I’m glad you mentioned something because I still hadn’t figured it out. I’ll do some testing 😈.
      RE: your supercharger - it sure makes me curious if my car is as powerful as it should be. How many miles are on your cat (first got it and now)?

    • @maurice3016
      @maurice3016 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gas Smileage 26,000 when I bought it last april or may. And I noticed a louder and more pronounced whine around 40K in January. Took it in last week at 42,100. I'm looking at the service invoice right now and the dealership wrote: "Tested to find noise coming from super charger. Replaced super charger. Upon disassembly, found tensioner locking up when attempting to release. Also replaced tensioner for supercharger belt. Reassembled." It was covered by the powertrain warranty which is still active to 2022 with 2016 models.

    • @GasSmileage
      @GasSmileage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you ever looked at the engine power in performance pages while driving and if so, did you notice a difference before and after SC replacement?
      I’ve been paranoid about supercharger issues so I extended the warranty through Mopar for another 3 years and 36k.

    • @maurice3016

      @GasSmileage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel you and totally agree. I don’t know how they came to their decision but we’re likely talking such a minimal change in build cost on their part that even one lost sale because of a missing feature just sucks from a business standpoint. Keep in mind, I’m in a 2016 model, I’d be interested to see how the more current years differ.
      You can’t go wrong either way, a z06 will likely be a better driving machine but the hellcat is such a visceral experience even at light throttle that I have to lean hellcat for every day driving. Although I have not daily driven a z06 yet so take that with a grain of salt

It’s a bittersweet feeling to daily drive one though because I know I’m driving the value away but to me it’s priceless to wake up and experience this everyday. I just got a 2019 hellcat charger with 1222 miles on it and I love it! But I noticed the break dust is insane and also the muffler tips turned black after 2 weeks.. and I did no touch car wash almost everyday.. now a few people that drive behind me say it reeks like gas and smells horrible.. but I just thought it’s bc it’s a hellcat.. but it might be running to lean...now I have 2400 miles on it, in a month I put a little over 1000k miles on it. I have a few problems with it so far dodge is taking care of.. but I wish they were built a little bit better

    • @GasSmileage
      @GasSmileage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I feel your pain John, the brake dust is out of control and if your wheels are in good enough shape, I’d recommend having them taken off and ceramic coated. It will make cleaning them much easier and eventually you can swap to ceramic brake pads to help with that too.
      My muffler tips are completely black too at this point. I didn’t realize they were a different color until my friend said something during a wash.
      A thread on the Hellcat forums seems to suggest that 1 in 20 hellcats will be problem free. The other 19 will make good use of their warranty. Sucks that the quality isn’t there in all regards but it’s still beyond impressive in many ways. Drive safe and thanks for watching/commenting!

    I heard that using the Hellcat in a daily basis is kind of annoying in terms of maneuvering due to:
    1. The weight
    2. It is hard control when maneuvering
    So my question is. Can you drive it like you drive Mustang Shelby for example or it needs super extra focus to control?

    • @GasSmileage
      @GasSmileage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I’ve never driven a Shelby but the hellcat will surprise you in a good way when you drive it. Definitely don’t need extra focus unless you’re pushing hard. The weight is handled extremely well and the only time you’ll notice it is in corners. The varying suspension modes give you the ability to modify how stiff you like your ride which helps a lot but I don’t think it would drive like a Shelby in terms of maneuvering.

    Oil consumption is because it uses 0w40 weight oil. That cold start takes in a bit of oil for sure. If anything I'd run 5w40 or something close. 0w40 is too think when cold.

    Agreed especially the window roll up. I have only had mine for a month and went from my corvette C7 Z06 to my Redeye both daily drivers, year round with snow tires in Winter.
    Even after a few weeks I miss my heads up display, tight handling and cool looks but the Dodge does not bottom out or wallow in dips in the road and handles pretty well.

    Cant stand ceramic brake pads,they just don't stop that good. Use HAWK race pads or high performance Street pads, Low dusting. I also use the HAWK pads for towing on pickup trucks. I've never found a pad better then HAWK. Semi Slick tires work great in the corners, with at least 47 psi with a tire rating at 51 PSI. The NASCAR boys are using 50 psi on their outside tires for many years and they would like to use more if only they were allowed to. 36 PSI in the corners is just not going to work.

    Honestly the blind spots never bothered me at all. Get the driver convenience package for extra assurance, and adjust your mirrors properly. If you can see the side of your car in the mirror without leaning, your mirrors are not adjusted correctly. The one majoy issue is y-shaped intersections, where you're coming down the small arm of the y, have to stop, and merge onto the long arm of the y. (the intersection has a sharp angle and you're turning across two lanes following the obtuse angle) The solution is simple though. Turn against the turn; turn as though you're making a right instead of a left so your car is more perpendicular to the road you are merging onto, and you'll be able to see just fine. Do not take those turns without angling your car though, or you'll be pulling out with a prayer lol. Apart from those intersections explicitly I've daily driven my SXT for over a year and a half and never run into issues with blind spots.
    Course my previous car was a 2011 malibu and they had some pretty big rear pillars too, so maybe I am just used to using my mirrors.

    • @GasSmileage
      @GasSmileage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Imagine having a supercharged 700hp car with a factory power train warranty lasting 60,000 miles that you paid no where close to $70,000 for.
      I changed the oil just before 6k and if following the owners manual results in a catastrophic failure of their engine, they replace it under warranty. I’m not saying that waiting that long is a good idea and that I’ll be doing that again but I wouldn’t expect following the operating manual would cause any issues or have a TH-cam hellcat expert pop up.
      Manual doesn’t say 8000, it says don’t exceed 6000 or 6 months, which ever comes first. Neither of which was exceeded. The problem is hundreds of miles before 6k and four months after last change, the engine threw a code for low oil pressure. Stop commenting like you have any idea what you’re saying. Great job at offering zero value 👌🏽

      I figured maintenance costs whether it’s for brakes, insurance, gas, tires, etc would be a turn off no matter what vehicle you’re driving. Of course some of these costs are amplified with the hellcat but I tried to come up with a more unique list of annoyances based on my experiences.
      The saying ignorance is bliss holds very true when driving a hellcat as a daily. To think of the individual costs constantly while driving around would take away from the enjoyment.
      I hope I’m wrong about electric vehicles but I’m investing in the experience of what could be a dying breed of vehicles. Gas guzzling V8s with a supercharger on top from the factory, I’m willing to work a bit harder in the now to enjoy that.
