An extra juicy reaction 😎! I Call Your Name was the second single released from Switch's 1979 album: Switch II. It was written by Bobby DeBarge and Gregory Williams. It was produced by Bobby DeBarge. The song reached #8 on the R&B chart and #83 on the Hot 100. Bobby DeBarge, who is the lead singer on this song, is the second eldest member of the DeBarge family. El and Bunny DeBarge provided background vocals. Tommy DeBarge plays bass guitar in the group as well. El DeBarge performs "I Call Your Name" and "There'll Never Be" during his live on stage performances as a tribute to Bobby DeBarge. See below to find out who this song was written about.
I Call Your Name has been sampled by many artists including by Rich Boy- Throw Some D's (2006).
    Switch Info 📰:
Switch was formed in Mansfield, Ohio, in December 1976 by Gregory Williams. They recorded a demo tape in Columbus, Ohio with the financial assistance of Bernd Lichters. Switch included Gregory Williams, brothers Tommy DeBarge and Bobby DeBarge, all from Grand Rapids, Michigan, along with Akron, Ohio natives Phillip Ingram (brother of singer James Ingram), Eddie Fluellen, and Jody Sims (originally from Steubenville, Ohio). Gregory Williams, Bobby DeBarge and Jody Sims had been members of White Heat, which released a self-titled album on RCA in 1975, but the band's producer, Barry White, soon shuttered his Soul Unlimited production company and dropped all the acts on the roster. Gregory Williams, then living in Akron, decided to form his own band.
The new group would become Switch due to their ability to switch to different lead vocalists and instruments during a song. After a demo was recorded by the newly formed, unnamed band, Gregory Williams and Jody Sims flew to LA and by sheer coincidence got the attention of Jermaine Jackson, former member of the Jackson 5, and Hazel Gordy Jackson (Jermaine's then-wife and daughter of Motown chief Berry Gordy Jr.), who heard the group's demo tape. Within weeks, the group was signed to Motown Records subsidiary record label Gordy Records. They recorded and released their self titled debut album some 18 months later in 1978, which featured their first Top 10 R&B hit single, entitled "There'll Never Be". The song also proved to be their biggest success on the Billboard Hot 100, where it was a Top 40 hit (their only one), peaking at #36.
Their songs were written by Gregory Williams, Bobby DeBarge and Jody Sims, sometimes in collaboration with Jermaine Jackson. Though they never managed to achieve significant crossover success into the pop singles chart, they were a consistent presence on the R&B charts through the late 1970s with albums such as: Switch II from 1979, This Is My Dream and Reaching For Tomorrow in 1980. Their final release on Gordy was Switch V, released in 1981. Songs such as "I Wanna Be Closer", "We Like To Party", "I Call Your Name", "Best Beat In Town", and "Love Over and Over Again" also became hits for the group.
Bobby DeBarge left the group in 1981 when Motown Records offered him a solo deal which was finalized in 1983. Tommy DeBarge also left the group in 1981 as both brothers began to mentor their younger siblings in the group DeBarge who had been signed to Motown Records. But because of their contractual obligations with Gordy Records, they weren’t able to join DeBarge as group members. Switch's lead singer Phillip Ingram also left the group to pursue a solo career.
Switch then took on new vocalists and musicians: singer Renard Gallo, Gonzales Ozen, and bassist Phil Upchurch Jr. This configuration of Switch signed with Total Experience Records (home of their contemporaries the Gap Band) and recorded a final album: Am I Still Your Boyfriend, in 1984 before breaking up later that year.
In 1985, Switch reformed with Gregory Williams and all new members, getting little traction in the music industry. Gregory Williams would go on to produced music for groups like TLC and Groove Theory. Phillip Ingram who was a part of the short lived group: Deco, got into songwriting, writing for the Temptations, Patti LaBelle and Janet Jackson, as well as for movies and commercials. Eddie Fluellen continued playing on sessions and performing at shows in Las Vegas.
In 1991, Motown Records released a greatest hits compilation album by Switch.
Former lead singer Bobby DeBarge died of AIDS-related complications in Grand Rapids, Michigan on August 16, 1995 at age 39.
Former bass guitar player and backup singer Tommy DeBarge died on October 21, 2021 at age 64.
In 2008, TV One produced an Unsung episode on the DeBarge family.
In 2017, TV One produced an Unsung episode on the band Switch.
In 2019, TV One produced "The Bobby DeBarge Story" for television.
Switch has since reunited, featuring original members including: Gregory Williams, Eddie Fluellen, Phillip Ingram, Michael McGloiry and new co-lead vocalist Akili Nickson. They perform their songs live on stage in 2023.

Watching you enjoying this song makes me happy. I was 18 when this came out. It reminds me of the girl I was with at that time. Lost her when I went in the service. I saw her once when I got out the service and we were both different people. So it goes. But it makes smile when youngsters enjoy the music I grew up with.

Really sad because he had a voice even better than his brother El DeBarge , but they both had voices that sent chills down your spine.

Yes Bobby DeBarge is the eldest brother and also the second eldest I forgot the other DeBarge brother who was also in the group. The other guys in the group was also complimentary to them. DeBarge came out after switch without their older brother. Bobby and El have the same flow. Bobby was more powerful with it but El was a better producer. Yet also just as good as his brother with his high notes. EL just use it more when he needed it. Bobby DeBarge would let it loose. This young lady is very receptive to the music to the point where she recognized that they sound the same. Also acknowledging they are brothers and they didn't even show the video where you can see the resemblance. Great work young lady

“Eldra's first professional recording was as background vocalist to Switch's 1979 hit "I Call Your Name". He later helped to arrange music for several Switch songs including "Love Over and Over Again" and "My Friend in the Sky", which he, Bunny, and Bobby wrote”
