For 3 years now I've been thinking that I'm the only one obsessed with driving efficiently, then you made this video. I'm so excited to find out that there's a whole community of efficient drivers out there!🙆♂️🙆♂️🔥
Interesting video, many people will say "you're in the wrong car if you're worried about MPG" I think it's important to remember just because you have a quick car, it doesn't automatically mean you need to waste fuel when you don't need it! I managed 43mpg on a 40 or so mile run once in my N54 335i
Very cool that you’ve put a spotlight on fuel economy Joe. People often say ‘you don’t buy a performance car for economy’ but most of us don’t have limitless money and even if we did there are better uses for it than wasting it with inefficient driving. As someone that moved from a 230i (perfect blend of economy and performance) to an M240i (worth the knock to economy for the sound alone, but still massively efficient) I do geek out on this stuff. Managed to average 46mpg in my manual car on a trip to wales so I’m good at not using fuel but it’s always good to spread the knowledge around!
The comments here complaining how a sports car owner shouldn’t have to care about mpg do my head in. People really find any possible excuse to justify why they can’t reach their goals
Unless I missed it was this video sponsored by Halfords by any chance? Just looked at the Fuel Pack and it’s only available as a service add on. Cheapest oil service is £130 + the £30 fuel pack 😮. You’ve got to be very fuel efficient to get that money back in savings.
Already knew a lot of what ya man said Joe about efficiency which is why I regularly see 30 to 40 mpg in comfort mode and even more in Eco mode on my daily trip to work and back in my M140i with mixed driving 😁😉👍
Yes it all makes a lot it of sense and all things I do in my diesel Astra. I suspect that good driving behaviour has a bigger impact on fuel economy than a Halfords economy pack and it would have been interesting to see a proper comparison. But of most interest, I want to see you do a proper economy run in the M2 now you've learnt how to drive more efficiently and show us the result
Joe I average over 80mpg on a run and nearly 65-70mpg in built up areas, I drive a Skoda estate 1.4 diesel auto gear box. Have I beaten Kevin’s record?
I drive a 218i coupe automatic with an fuel consumption average of 34 MPG / 8.3L 100km on 19 inch P-zero's. This guy has a fair point when it comes to tyres. During winter I drive 17 inch Eco all-season tyres. I easily get 44 MPG.
Interesting video @joeachilles . Reality is even if you drive a performance car you will have regular drives to do. I have an M340i, it averages around 40 to a gallon and on a motorway trip it's mid 40s. It makes it a superb all rounder. If I want fun I can but combined with adaptive suspension it is just about the best daily you could imagine.
I find this topic extremely fascinating. I have a hot hatch and I'm always looking to beat my previous MPG PB and as a consequence driving like a grandma most of the time. Would have been nice to speak about the vehicle eco mode and whether it improves efficiency in a noticeable way. Possibly even different octane fuel.

@@AdamRosenberg90 Absolutely! I'd have thought 95% of the viewers would already know that being slow and steady on the throttle will save fuel and that using Halfords for a service would also reduce the future value of the vehicle vs a proper dealer service.
fuel efficiency should not be a priority over your engine's health in the long run. Imho being in a lower gear in the city will result in a bit more consumption but it will save the headache of a knocking engine and carbon buildup, when the rich mixture the ecu is putting in the cylinders in a higher gear. As a safety instructor said it on a debrief, 20 is 2nd, 30 is 3rd. If you are on a motorway without much traffic or nothing to do, go ahead and try hypermiling, but in the city, traffic, just try to use less brakes (so lower gear and engine brake is also a better choice)
Their ‘Fuel efficiency pack’ is just an oil flush before an oil change and a fuel treatment added, the rest is just common sense surely ?! In Joe’s defence the channel is his livelihood but I’m not entirely sure given the choice Halfords would of been his 1st option for anything car maintenance related ! Not sure this is right the channel Joe 🤔
I suspect that those who are berating you for a) going to Halfords or b) wanting to save petrol in a sports car are driving fiat puntos and angry they have to live vicariously through you. How is saving fuel a bad thing in any circumstance? Use your heads
Have you thought about doing the IAM Roadsmart course and test. In my experience you will save at least 10% on your fuel costs just by driving to the System, and you will still make good progress
In my stock OG M2, the best balance of fuel consumption is achieved at 70 MPH. At 75, I lose 2 miles per gallon. At that speed, the aerodynamics become unfavorable rather quickly.
@@JoeAchilles1 Is it wrong to show concern for you and your channel? I know you have to make a living but this video came across as really forced - you certainly didn't look comfortable and it was like watching an infomercial. You're better than this and you know you are!
The efficient driving tips are fine, and yes I also drive in an efficient manner (my average MPG with my M4 over 5k is around 34mpg including a couple of track days and a ring trip). Replace any necessary filters in line with manufacturers guidelines. No additive based product will give any benefit other than to drain your wallet.
I used to commute late at night with over 20 islands on my route. In that car i could let off the throttle 0.3 miles to each one, naturally slowing down in gear before driving straight over if traffic allowed. If I got each one that's over 6 miles of free motoring. Adds up when you do a journey like that regularly.
Bmw’s are pretty efficient. My 2.0 petrol G20 fuel consumption has been about 6.5 L/100km which is 45 mpg (UK) if i’m not mistaken. That’s about the same I had on a ’16 Fiesta with the 1 litre 3-pot ecoboost with 6sp auto…Bmw is clearly doing something right, the engine/transmission combo seems to work very efficiently. 👍
The fiestas with the auto transmissions are a lot less efficient than the manuals for some reason. I can easily get under 6L/100km combined in my 2017 1.0 ecoboost fiesta with the 5sp manual. If i drive just 60-80kmh roads i'll get 4.5-5.5l/100km.
@@AmadeusBrown that’s interesting. I thought the double clutch auto is more efficient but that sounds like the manual is way better. I remember the current fiesta 2017-? auto box being a torque converter box again which must be even worse on fuel. Then switched to the G20 and was surprised how economical a traditional torque converter auto can still be.
