To the Peruvian lady: You can find Japanese-tutor online-video, who will speak with you or possibly a cafe-tutor who meets in person with you to speak which is worth the cost if you find high quality and good price. With grammar, verbs and sentences you have basics for speaking. Oh also do LOTS and LOTS of vocabulary that will help your speaking a lot along with pronunciation (phonemes practice). Good luck and that "Gambate!" attitude will take you all the way.

The Peruvian lady looks like she could even be half-Japanese
For me personally it was a bit lonely. I kinda wanted to get to know people in Japan. But it was hard. Everybody seemed so reserved towards each other. Every country basically had their own group. The French, the Americans and the Japanese. Then we had the Europeans (who for some reason only had little contact with the French). Seemed like there was more contact between Europeans in general. Europeans also mingled with the Americans every now and then. For some events everybody got together, but that was it.
Mostly the international students tried to get along with the Japanese to try the language, while the Japanese seemed to be mostly interested in having some fun with the exchange students, but were very distant. So after the honeymoon phase of getting to know each other, the contact seemingly ended abruptly.
This was my experience in Sweden. It was hard to form close relationships with locals. Although I eventually had a lot of luck dating mostly because Swedish women were tired of Swedish men being so reserved.
French often have worse English than other Europeans, at least that's why they're more likely to stick together when I've been backpacking.

@@crimson4066 probably because there's a way more massive difference between a German and a Brit who grew up at their home countries than a German and a Brit who grew up in the same country, like US. They're American before they're German or Brit.

The girl from Turkey brought up a good point. It may be too overwhelming to practice Japanese with any Japanese stranger. The various dialects will bring confusion instead of understanding. Perhaps it is better to pick a certain Japanese group like Osakans. After learning their Japanese, then go out & explore Japan.

When you interview foreigners can you please ask "what did you leave behind when you moved to Japan?". Like financially, or family wise. Also can you please ask "What made Japan worth it for you to leave behind that stuff"

Full social immersion is the key to learn a language. I know it may sound easy, but I would definitely do my best to talk people and practice my Japanese.

From my own perspective, the key to acing a particular language is keep practicing and use it as your first language. You know, when I came to Australia 6 years ago, I spoke poor English during my first year of my college degree because I didn't put as many efforts as I could to talk to any domestic students and professors... So at that moment I was incredibly reluctant to speak English during my first year study. And now, I am about to move to Sydney and pave the way for my permanent residence, I am currently able to speak fluent and perfect Australian English as I have been working for various renowned business corporations in this culturally diverse nation. Even though I make some mistakes during any daily or professional conversations, it is still okay to clarify what you are trying to say... As one of the international students living in Greater Sydney for almost 5 years, there is a considerable number of students coming from different countries who either look for any ideal jobs or pursue their dream courses, which makes this wonderful place more inclusive of those who are currently pushing themselves towards their goals... So I think your interview video has just hit the nail on the head... Thanks for sharing this video with all of us.
This is SO true. Spanish is my native language, however, when I speak english I do not think in Spanish. I don't translate what I want to say but THINK in the 'foreign' language instead.
@@nothatgxrl Yeah adjusting the way you speak is the most fundamental way to smoothly express your feelings and thoughts in a language you might not be proficient in or familiar with. Instead of translating every single word into your mother tongue, try training yourself to convey what you think and feel without any additional translation.

I was an international student before. Most of my classmates were Chinese (they were good in Kanji😂) … half of our class was kaiwa(conversation) i think it helped us a lot to speak more in Japanese.
oh well, since the characters are pretty much the same and all we need to know is how to pronounce it in Japanese
the hardest part of learning Japanese is the easiest part for Chinese speaking people
@@missplainjane3905 it's not hard to go from simplified to traditional characters. Almost all mainland Chinese can read traditional, maybe not write. meanings for kanji/hanzi are usually the same or similar. If it's different, well u just need to remember and it's not too hard.
@@missplainjane3905 of course it can depend, as they are not exactly the same language. However, i can tell you are probably not personally familiar with Chinese and Japanese. I'm from China, currently living and working in Japan. I speak japanese. That is why I am confident in what I'm saying.

I've been an international student in Japan for over 2 years now, and covid unfortunately took the fun of being in Japan away from me. I've been in Zoom classes almost the entire time. I work from home too, so I don't need to leave where I live if I don't want to. It was great at first, but now it's just a sad lonely existence. I'll be graduating in August though, so I'm looking for a job so I can move elsewhere in Japan and hopefully get a new chance at making new friends. Sorry for being such a Debbie Downer, but it's the reality sometimes of living here in Japan.

i'm sad that my love for japan has developed late, more precisely, i'm already 23, but i still have a burning desire to live here, but i'm from russia, with the current situation in the world, and the whole education system in russia it's almost impossible to save money, so I'll try to make myself a sufficient portfolio, as well as surpass N2 so that I can move to live in that amazing country.

Dont give up mentally.. i know it's been hard times during the last 2 years, having all this COVID nonsense going on, wars, economic problems, etc., But try to find a way for you to have the experiences in life you want to have. I'm 31 years old, from Argentina. In a few months i'm moving to Italy, i plan to live in europe for some time, save money, travel around, and then i want to go to Japan also. I'm pretty much all days watching TH-cam videos about life in Japan, living there as a foreigner and all that. So, yeah, stay present and keep going with whatever comes the best you can. Take care! Hope you have a nice and peaceful life :)

I just discovered this channel and it’s rejogging my interest in Japanese culture that I had while studying the language in college. One thing I’ve always been interested to learn about Japan is whether or not there is any craft beer culture. In America and in particular New England the craft beer culture has been rapidly expanding. Is craft beer a thing in Japan at all? Can you visit breweries and have these specially crafted brews? And if so how popular is it in Japan? Lastly if I wanted to visit Japan and try some craft beers where should I visit? I think that would be a cool topic. Thanks for the content!

I was an international student in Fukuoka in 2016. I loved it so much. I also went to a language school for 5 month and I would also say that it is quite necessary to go to a language school to learn the language. They just talk in japanese, but it really helps to learn the language faster. Unfortunately I forgot a lot of japanese already and I am also now quite shy to even try, but back then in 2016, I was able to talk with people, have a normal conversation and talked with strangers. All of them were so nice :)
Takashii, I have a pronunciation tip for you: When you want to say an English 'oo' sound - like in the word 'to', do this: Keep your mouth & lips _exactly the same_ as your current pronunciation of 'to'; but relax your tongue, and let the middle of it drop downward and back - leaving more of an open space inside your mouth. (The lips stay rounded, still with a narrow opening.) This vowel sound works for words like tooth, boot, moon, etc.

I can relate to the guy from Ukraine. As an east european myself, we don't really vibe well with people from west, now with the whole conflict thing and listening people's opinions, even less so I can totally understand him. Thank you for this video, it was very interesting. I think I'm stuck with my japanese now, I guess there is really only so much I can do by myself. I will think about people's advices here.
That first guy is wrong, you can learn alone a good amount, you only need other people when you speak the language.

You can dream that in the same amount of time you’ll do better at learning at home but it’s not for everybody, not everyone has a lot of dedication to spend 4 hours every day and don’t react to things around while at school you have a higher chance to learn faster even if you are a bit distracted person
That’s why not everyone works at home
Working in the office in the proper atmosphere and people around is very important also

I would be interested to see you interview older people, maybe not randomly in the street as it might be more comfortable for them in a prepared context for some perhaps but, yeah older Japanese people's opinions.

I really enjoy your videos and interviews, Takashii! You ask great questions and take the time to get to know the people a bit. I appreciate that you always ask the foreigners if they speak Japanese and give them the opportunity to speak what they can. Since many of the people you speak with also speak excellent English but are often not from English-speaking countries, I would also like to know how they learned English as well. Listening to the first guy was very interesting because I'm interested in studying animation at Kyoto Seika University which is also fully Japanese classes and you need JLPT N2+ to enter anyway. Right now I have about 4-5 years to become fluent in Japanese without language school so I hope that'll be enough time!

From my point of view as someone who learns Japanese at University learning at a school is very important. Sometimes you just don’t have the motivation to set your own goals. Also there are many Japanese exchange students that go to my University as well so I’ve been lucky enough to practice speaking, before I go to Japan as an exchange student in September.

It’s very telling how educated u are by saying, from my point of view? My son is a Professor here in the States & everything u just said sounds so much like him. I think your very bright & as a mother I think u will go far.

Interesting pov from the fashion student about learning Japanese from language school in Japan. I personally studied Japanese for 7 years of 2h per week at a language centre in Singapore. After that I worked on two Japanese companies in Singapore using my limited Japa ese everyday for 10 years. But I somehow felt that I could not follow the conversations in Japanese at work. I often wondered if I studied for 1 year in language school in Japan would that really make a difference for me.

@@brilakkuma64 You have to be enrolled as a student, Japan will currently open their borders for business or international students.

@@brilakkuma64 You can't, most language schools are 3-6 months so you have to look for one to be enrolled to get into Japan. There is also a US university called Temple University that you can enroll on for Fall, Spring, Summer.
@@brilakkuma64 U need to apply through a Japanese language course, and the minimum for a visa entry is 6 months. Tourist visas are not accepted at the moment.

I would really love to go to japan for my studies. But since I will become a teacher for deaf children, its gonna be very hard to adapt this for japan xD I would have to learn japanese, the japanese school system (especially for deaf and hard hearing) AND japanese sign language. I should have studied engineering lmao
