    The bade gasket issue can be fixed easily for good. I can't remember the company name but.....on the market is what is essentially tubes that either thread or are press fit way uo into the holes in the cylinder where the oil drains back to the case from the heads. After they are installed they protrude past the base of the cylinder. When the cylinder is set on the case they sticks down in to the case, half inch I think. What this creates is the oil runs down inside the tube past the area of the base gaskets. This makes it virtually impossible for oil leaks to happen at the base gaskets.

    As long as you fail to warm it up befor runing it hard it will blow gaskets.

    On my 98' evo I have 3 13/16ths sputhe cylinders. I'm not sure what the pistons are. 4 5/8 stroker. Harley screaming eagle heads. The cylinders don't use gaskets. Just a small copper ring that sits around the top of the sleeve. I beat that crap out of the motor, no issues. I've seen alot of the drag racing guys with drag cylinders not even use head gaskets at all. Crazy. And they run 13,24,15-1 compression. Pretty wild

    So sorry you have to go back in there. When I was looking for my 2 old Evo's I noticed that all of the EFI bikes had leaks at the base gaskets. I came to the conclusion that most people run them like Twinkies. They just hop on start it and go. Thus, the jugs and heads are not expanded to full size and the gaskets are not under right pressures to seal properly. If the valve covers are not good and warm don't run them hard.
    Just my 2cents. Good luck.

    Idk if you're going to see this but just wondering what your compression test results were and round about what they're supposed to be?
    Just started wrenching on Harley's i kind of inherited one and also I'm fixing a friend's. Im also wondering if they're unreliable in general? Personally i always have stuck to Japanese cars and bikes so I don't have drama.🤷‍♂️

    Which way did you put the head gaskets on. Fat side on rivet up or down.?

    I'm not sure how a compression release would make things different, it only works until the engine fires...

    20:35- what torque wrench are you using to get 7 (and later) 14 foot lbs?

    Is't the breather system suppose to keep this from happening? I don't know, I'm guessing. Is there an upgrade for it when you start making big compression?

      Nope, the breather is just for the oil system. When you run higher compression pistons you can have your heads drilled and machined To run compression releases to make start up easier on the engine

    I see u used cometic head gasket they have there own torque specs 42ft lbs final torque same as james i believe

    So..
    If i want to do some preventive maintainance on my Evo..was an 883..someone put on a 1200 kit..im thinking about checking the torque on the head bolts..would I take off one bolt at a time..lube up that bolt..reinstall it to book specs..or just torque to spec..minus the 90* turn..??

      If nothing is leaking or wrong absolutely do not start loosening bolts. If you crack one of the head bolts loose you have to remove all of them in sequence. Do not loosen any of those bolts unless you are going to remove the head.
      Best case scenario is you will blow the head gasket by removing one bolt and then putting it back while the rest are torqued.
      Don’t do any of this unless you have a good understanding of what you are doing and why things need to be done in a certain sequence.
      Buy a service manual. Watch videos and read forums.
      One more thing. If you pull the heads you you will need a top end gasket kit. Once you pull the cylinder heads you will have to pull the cylinders because you will now have to replace the base gaskets.
      If you go through all of this you should pull the pistons from the jugs and replace the piston rings. See how removing random bolts for no reason turns into a major job?

    You know if you take the rocker covers off and remove the head bolts out you can lift the whole top end off all at one time carb and all 😎

    Just use mls comtic metal gaskets never had a problem lost count of how many evos i have done ,now i do machine the base 0.003 ,& if running 14.1cr 120cubic evo i use copper with head & base with hylmar blue gasket sealer no leaks never

      Compression release has nothing to do with the head gasket, but it does save the starter and battery + wiring.

    Dude your problem isn’t 10.5:1 pistons.. your problem is your studs and head bolts are stretched. Get new studs and new head bolts, you’ll have no issues.

      That's been proven to be false a long time ago. Stock studs are good for alot and for a Kong long time

      This will be done on my 96 evo @ 20.5 miles ,guess original owner never warmed her to proper temp? Or is this just a stock gasket thing ? And gaskets just preference or what ,looking at James kit ,new to harley? Thanks for video,

      Sometime you have to lead the customer away from harmful modifications, I bet this is the last high compression evo he does. I have seen the studs pull right out of the case from too much compression...
      I would have redone this job for nothing myself.

      I typically don’t list too many torque specs. I always prefer people go to their owners manual. But thanks for the input

    If you have a scored bores, time for new jugs and new pistons. Period... no fixing that. I've seen so many HD owners hop things up on these motors, and they end up with nothing but reliability problems.

      Strongly disagree with that. I’ve had many cylinders bored within allowable tolerances and have never had reliability issues
