I would like to add Saroo's birth mother to the list of those to admire in this story. After being abandoned by her husband, she did all she could to care for her four children. After the tragedy of losing two sons on the same night, she prevailed and somehow provided schooling for her remaining two children. Her daughter grew up to become a teacher and her other son is a successful business man. She also searched assiduously for Saroo in nearby towns and insisted on staying in Ganesh Talai in the event that Saroo would come back to her some day. When he did return, she was there for him. Therefore I celebrate her goodness.
NOT REALLY REALITY OF HER BIOLOGICAL MOTHER th-cam.com/video/pDJNxtFeMSU/w-d-xo.html Many people have summarized what was said in the interview. Here is a word-by-word (or as close as possible) translation- Interviewer- Today we are here with Sheru's mother, with Fatima Bi. Today Fatima Bi will tell us how much Sheru helps her and how she gets by (in terms of her income). Yes, ma'am. Fatima Bi- Ah, that... Trouble... But as of now, I am working. I work as a labourer and earn my daily bread, and then, about the future- Interviewer- How do you run your household? What work do you do? Fatima Bi- Hard work, labour, washing utensils and sweeping floors- with all this, I manage. Interviewer- How many homes do you wash utensils in? Fatima Bi- Three homes. Two or three homes. Interviewer- And how much do you earn in a month? Fatima Bi- I get about Rs. 1500-1600. Interviewer- So how has Sheru helped you so far? Fatima Bi- He did help me, for about a year he helped me quite a bit, and then after that, I don't know what troubles came upon him, but he stopped helping. Interviewer- As in, after that year, he hasn't given any aid until now? Fatima Bi- No help, no. Interviewer- What do you want from your son? Fatima Bi- I want him to be well, to eat and drink well (to be healthy), and be well/happy. Interviewer- What do you want him to do for you? Fatima Bi- For me, let him do what he desires in his heart, or if not, I don't need any help anyway. Interviewer- You don't need any help from your son..? Fatima Bi- I don't need any help. Interviewer- When you get older and won't be able to work, then-? Fatima Bi- No, I have help. I have a son, a daughter, they will help me. Interviewer- So you don't have any expectations from Sheru? Fatima Bi- No, I don't have any request for help from Sheru. I have a son, I have a daughter. They will do a lot for me. Interviewer- You also go to wash utensils at weddings- Fatima Bi- Yes, I used to go for any sweeping or washing, but they have now removed me. Because, they say, 'your son has now become famous and you're washing and sweeping. We don't like it. What will people say? That Sheru has reached such heights and his mother still washes utensils.' So the organisers for the weddings stopped me from working there. Now I work at two or three homes, and live on what I earn from that. Interviewer- Your son has earned so much fame, he is known across the country, even then you like sweeping and washing? Fatima Bi- Yes, I like it, I like it very much. I like this kind of work, because if I stay at home, my arms and legs hurt, I fall sick. So I go to work myself. And until my hands and legs work, I will continue. And when my limbs stop working, I have sons. A daughter. A son and a daughter, they will help me. Interviewer- Have you ever asked Sheru for anything? Fatima Bi- No, I don't want to ask for anything from Sheru, and nor will I. Interviewer- Why? Fatima Bi- I won't ask. I have children. Interviewer- Why isn't he helping you? Do you know the reason why? Fatima Bi- He isn't helping, and I don't need help. If I demand that he help me- and if he hadn't been found? Interviewer- So you'd feel bad? Fatima Bi- Yes, I would. If he hadn't been found, what help could he have given me? Even then, I did earn and feed myself, didn't I? That is why I can't say anything to him. Such a great treasure Allah has given me, that in itself is a huge favour. Nobody asks about money in this world, but they do ask about children, about how many children one has. He has brought fame/pride/glory, that is enough. Interviewer- He has made you famous across the country, that this is Fatima Bi's son, in Khandwa- Fatima Bi- Yes, that will suffice. The dreams I used to have- every dream I saw was that my son- like, when I watched TV and saw the heroes and heroines, their dances on the stage, I always watched them and wondered if my son could have become like them. He might have become a hero, might have joined a dance group. Interviewer- So your dream has been fulfilled? Fatima Bi- Yes, it has. All the dreams I had seen have been fulfilled. My house- I used to live on rent in this house and the owners would ask me to leave- 'don't let her live here, don't give her the house'... When this would happen, I would keep thinking as I sat and cried, that if this were my own house then nobody could threaten me and ask me to leave, no one would bother me. This dream of mine has also been fulfilled. My yearning for my son has also been fulfilled, and he has achieved all this status and has made me famous throughout Madhya Pradesh. And the greatest of all, I feel very happy in my heart that my son has achieved all this and made me proud. I don't need any money. Interviewer- You now have a house and your son has been found- Fatima Bi- That's all, I have a house, a roof over my head, I don't have any worries. Interviewer- So with your domestic labour, you'll care for yourself. ******* Interviewer- Today we have with us Saroo's mother, whose real life story is the basis for the film 'Lion' which will release in theatres in India tomorrow. While, with this film, Saroo is bringing worldwide fame for Khandwa, here is Saroo's mother who is sweeping floors to earn money. Saroo's mother says that she wants nothing from him. He has bought her a home and it now provides her shelter. Now, Saroo and Saroo's well-wishers in Khandwa- their wish is that he do something for his mother such that he makes the people of Khandwa proud, and Saroo's mother is happy that he is making an impact in the world and has also helped me a lot. I, Jaten Tiwari, with cameraman Mahesh Patel, Patrika News, Khandwa.

His memory power is excellent at age 6 . Perhaps its the routine life style in India that went without man made intrusion in the name of development that brought him back to his mother's instinct who also did not give up on her lost son
What an amazing story! I think as a boy, Saroo (like most boys) has a mind that is geared more to spatial relations (where one thing is in relation to other things). Compound that with the fact that he was illiterate, and visual memory and capacity would have played an even stronger role in his finding his home. Having grown up in the West, as a girl, most of my memories are encoded in language and that creates a "fog" where the visual memories I have are not as strong.
Your thesis is fascinating. I think the same as you, not knowing the language must have keep his memories more vivid, especially for a kid, as you said. This story really is amazing and emotional!
Yup. As an Indian gal, can confirm my spatial memory sucks, but I'm cool with words. If I were saroo, the only thing I'd have gotten right would've been my name. Edit: Saroo got it wrong yknow. His name is actually Sheru but he mispronounced it as a kid

In India, when you mispronounce/misspell the name of a place like Burhanpur, chances are you'd get hundreds of different other places - behrampur, berampur etc. Google search would've been of no help there.

When the two mothers met it must have been so unreal. You look at this person and go that's my mother but this person is also my mother. Hmm anomaly of an anomaly moment.
This is what I don't like..little bit of lies here and there just to impress the people. He messaged his australian parents the night he found out the town. How do I know this? His Australian mother said in one of the interviews.
When he went back to india and found his birth mother he sent a text. Here he is talking about when he wanted to tell them he found his home town on google earth and need to take their permission to go to India.
in one interview his mother claims that he texted us the same night, in another one she says we were at his father office and he told us there. dont know which one to believe 😕
Amar Ryan He told his parents in person after he found his hometown in Google Earth. He then texted his parents when he found his family after going to India.

When he went back to india and found his birth mother he sent a text. Here he is talking about when he wanted to tell them he found his home town on google earth and need to take their permission to go to India.
