Wow Tim, this video is on of my favorites you've covered. So simple but important. Coming from a design background, clean code isn't something I understand enough. Would love more videos like this or a mega video breaking down all you do to clean up your code and speed up performance. Do you have a list of steps documented in Notion or anything?
Thanks so much, Austin! I’m really glad this helps, and thank you for the suggestions! Setting defaults and using utility classes are probably the biggest tips for reducing css bloat. I’ve packed all of my recommended defaults and utilities into the Lumos V2 cloneable. webflow.grsm.io/tricks?path=lumos-v2-beta
As a new web flow developer I notice frameworks seem to be the way to go. And all the agencies I see hiring use client first. Why does that one seem most popular and more importantly as a noob should I learn that first then move into lumps? Lumps seems a bit more complicated than client first. And I don’t really know the difference.
Thanks so much for the idea! I’m experimenting with maybe including a few common components in the Lumos cloneable to use as a starter. Currently, I believe Webflow duplicates the variables when copying a section between projects so that would likely have to be solved first before creating an external library
Hey @timothy great video and thumbnail. I've learnt a lot from your videos so many times. There are some specific features that dont work well accross browsers like 3d transforms, sticky property etc. I wish if you can make a video about this topic it would help a lot of people
@timothyricks why do you use the custom element for sections ( 0:43 ) as opposed to Webflow’s default section element? Would you recommend folks do the same for the likes of main, article, header, footer etc?
Hi Harry, the custom element allows us to set inline styles and link class names to component fields if needed. This is usually more needed for sections than main or articles, but on the published site, there’s no difference between using webflow’s default elements or a custom one with the same tag. The custom ones just give us more features
Can you do an updated tutorial on setting up cms filtering. Let’s say for a real estate website where they need to be filtered by number of beds baths etc.
I thought the same thing until doing more research recently! If html ever adds a "container" attribute one day, it could interfere with our custom attribute. So custom attributes are supposed to start with data- to avoid conflicts
@@timothyricks Is the only concern here that html might add an official attribute with the same name or are there other reasons to use data- in attribute names. I'm creating an internal gsap library using attributes and adding data to each attribute name would slow down applying them to elements but I also want to avoid future issues. I'm guessing if an attribute name is specific enough eg: gsap-load the likelihood of it conflicting with future html is little to none. Whereas using container definitely has a lot higher likelihood...
@@calebraney Good question! I think that was the main issue. They mentioned html validators won't know if the attribute was an error or intentional without the data- and also without the data- it has a higher likelihood of competing with other people's code. But I'm not sure if either are big issues for Webflow builds. stackoverflow.com/questions/24932391/are-custom-html-attributes-without-data-prefix-a-valid-attribute
Hey Timothy Ricks, I'm keen on exploring Webflow for a complex e-commerce platform instead of the widely discussed Shopify. As a no-code designer, do you think it's a viable option? Your insights would be appreciated! Thanks,
Hey guys, could anyone help me please? I'm using the wizardry technique for the responsiveness of the website and it's working great! But i came across something i've been trying to workaround for 2 days and can't figure out: Since i set the container max width to 1440px, whenever i need a section color or image, for example, to go all the way to the borders of the display it wont work. Any way i can solve this? Thank you!
Hi, good question! Usually, we'd want background colors or images to be applied to our sections, not to the containers, so that it can span the full width of the screen.
This is a little more remedial, but could you please do a video on overarching class organization? I just finished my first site and the back end is a bit of a mess with disorganized duplicated classes-I'd love to know some tips on how to keep things organized and nomenclaturally correct
Thanks so much for the idea! I cover this in my full build tutorial but definitely should make a shorter video on it. th-cam.com/users/livenj-1qB47aKo?si=-VH6hSay44_8UvOz
@@timothyricks I'll take a look at this video, but if you did make a little digestible naming and organization video for beginners, I would 100% be your target market
The fact that you're able to cover basic to complex things in such a concise, understandable manner makes you the GOAT for teaching Webflow Dev. 🔥🙏🏻
Thank you so much! I'm really glad this helps
The containter advice is GOLD
I'm a bit late to the webflow game but you are officially my guru. Keep up the good work!
Timothy is the main reason I check TH-cam every day. Thanks you!
Haha, thank you!!
Dude, every time I watch one of your videos I come out with at least one great new grain of knowledge to help me build faster and cleaner! Thanks.
You really are a Webflow wizard. I'm learning so much from you all the time :)
Thanks so much for watching!
@@timothyricks Any way you can give your community members a cloneable with all the mentioned with all the default styles

Ever thought about building a component library for Lumos? I currently pay relume, but would prefer to use components that aren't CF.

Amazing video Tim! I didn't know attributes have to have the word "data" appended to them to be valid. I thought it's up to the developer to decide.
