I believe that the true animal lovers and environmentalists are ranchers, farmers, hunters.. they respect the animal.

I feel in a lot of way we became soft in the way of living. Supermarkets were more convenient and you didn't have to deal with the dirt and grim of raising and processing you food. But as time are getting tougher we are finding we need to venture back to our ancestors and learn all over again how to provide for our selves.

We just harvested our CC this past weekend. i thanked each one for their sacrifice to feed my family. My heart hurt on harvest day after caring for them for 8 weeks. But it makes you respect and feel a sense of responsibility for where our food comes from.

I have helped process chickens when my grandparents gave up their farm several years ago, not my favorite thing to do. I also think the chickens are more tender and even taste better. I currently live in the city limits so I am getting the allowed 6 layers this spring and hope to have 6 meat birds at my son's across town.

30% of the beef we consume in the US comes from other countries and 25% of the chicken. People don't know that, and they also don't realize you can grow your own on a small patch of land, if you keep them moving.

  • @judithtucker6928
    @judithtucker6928 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Starting small in the spring with a few chickens for eggs. My son has already built a small chicken tractor to keep them in and we’re possibly leaning for some meat birds a little later on. It is comforting to know that your food is coming from humane conditions and also that they have been processed with mercy. Thank you for this video and you don’t know what kind of information you might need in the future for survival but even if you don’t need this then it’s still very valuable to know how to do it.
Just the connection with nature is invaluable in so many ways

I got my 1st bunch of Quail a year ago and learned how to raise and process them. This past summer with everything going on I raised 25 Cornish Cross and processed them by myself. Having processed quail previously and watching youtube I had enough knowledge to do it and didn't have a plucker or all the gadgets. I knew I had to process them because after so many weeks old the CornishX would die from their own weight/health. I definitely love the knowledge I gained, connected with my grandparents that are no longer here, and respect food so much more! Merry Christmas everyone!

Hahaha!!! Good for you for leading with mercy. The phrase I've learned is "assume good intentions". Sadly, with the advent of HOAs, it is really difficult for people to keep chickens, which is ridiculous. The fertilizer gained by chicken poo is beneficial for all if they are fed correctly.

I had a lot of doubt starting out. It's hard to take a life & not feel bad about it but at the same time, we're glad we can provide our family with food. If (when) the food system gets shut down or has shortages, we feel sure we can provide almost all of what we need to survive.
    Thank you for sharing.

i grew up seeing the food we hunted/caught get harvest. It was a experience that i never thought about when it came to eating food till i got older. i lived a village life in the loving city of PORTLAND OR. seeing a garden as i walked down the area i lived in growing up was nothing new. most of my family and friends either had some sort of food bird or a garden. I DEEP down always wanted to FRAM my own food/medicine.

Just knowing where your food came from and what it was fed and how it was treated is the most important reason to raise chickens. This was a great video and covered the basics. Thank you for that. I also wanted to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and many blessings to you and your family in 2021.

I know I should be willing to consider meat birds but I don't have the heart. I get way too attached to mine, the only way I'd eat them is if there was nothing else. I applaud anyone who is able to do it the humane way and help feed their families from God's bounty.

It is hard for everyone who does it. Myself and my husband hate kill day but I will not eat an animal that has suffered a caged unhappy life so we do it. And yes we do get attached to our meat animals, they all have names and individual personalities.

I get you. I don't know if this is possible but I grew meat birds with girlfriends and I did the first 4 weeks and they had the birds at their property after that for the next 4 weeks. That gave me the chance to distance myself. I still got to see the chicks twice a day when I went to go help move them, feed them, check waterers, etc... For me that was different enough from my spending so much time with them here in my broader. Seylah sitting in the chicken tractor reminds me very much of me and my granddaughter with our meat birds and layers hopping on our laps. My granddaughter was 3 and already a chicken wrangler!!! She just turned 9 and when she goes into our chicken yard the layers run up to her and she is so darling telling the chickens"yes ma'am it your mama"!

Mike, You look great following surgery. You made a remarkable recovery. I processed my own chickens when I homesteaded in The Philippine Islands. I ate far less meat, and far less chickens. The birds were great and laid great eggs. We also had quail, turkeys and ducks. We enjoyed the ducks and chickens the best. We hatches our own birds, (turkeys, chickens, ducks and quail). I just ate less chickens as I knew the birds sacrificed to feed my family and I. I also ate less beef and pork. We ate far more eggs. Chickens are easy, and ducks are even easier. I like the connection with my food.. God bless America.

This is a great video, Mike. Thanks for taking the time to share about this. I realized the fragility of our food system this year (I think it was in the spring) when suddenly the meat coolers in the grocery stores were bare! My local grocery store filled the space up with gallon jugs of water. You can't really live on just water! I'm not sure I could butcher my own chickens, but I like your suggestion of observing and helping someone who is processing their birds. Thanks!

I'm so glad you made this video. My 1st thought in response to that question was something along the line of "duh....". Then I remembered a video my daughter showed me of a group of kids interviewed on where their food came from. They literally thought food just magically appeared at the grocery store. So, that question has to be taken seriously, cause some people really don't get it. Sadly.

They also help fertilize your garden if you use them on your garden spot during the winter. And free range eggs and free range meat has a lot better taste because they get the minerals that cagecd chickens don't.

The prayer of a good man or farm woman for the gift of life that THEY tended for the good of earth and family but ultimately to praise the Creator for his provisions, rights and laws on humane care of our environment, yes the prayer over a store bought chicken is just not the same... Though I am grateful that someone other than myself did the harvesting (for now) I still wish we could raise our own! And helping to spread the community of "CAN DO" is good on ya' Mike and Lacie!

very true most people have no clue what it takes to raise their own food. Much less know how to process it or ways to store it. We need to encourage more people to at least learn how it done. And if possible keep a small fock of revolving birds just in case we have nothing at the supermarket to buy. And more & more it looks like this is the smartest thing people can do. You may not have the space/land/time to raise a cow. But it doesn't take long to raise a chicken to eat. Yes it might get boring to only have chicken to eat, but at least you can eat. Others without these skills will go hungry.

We just did 41 birds and there is no greater feeling then being able to provide your own food for your family

I want to have chickens and a garden. I love animals, but know I can give them a great life, and they only have one bad day❤️

You're so right Mike. I don't blame you for knowing where your meat comes from and how they are raised even though I am vegan. All processed foods are very unhealthy
