Pretty much all store mushrooms are farmed, not collected from the wild. Speaking of which, you can grow certain gourmet mushrooms at home without excessive difficulty.
When I read the title, I thought it meant it kills you in a way where you touch it or breathe in particles and slowly die. I feel safer knowing that this only occurs when you eat them!
@@balancemyself yes, unlike plants there are no mushrooms that are dangerous to touch, smell, or even taste if you don't swallow (probably don't go out tasting random mushrooms though). The only way a mushroom can harm you is if you eat it
I suspect it was referring to the fact that you feel fine for the first 12 hours or so. There are mushrooms that will make you ill, you then recover but, it then proceeds to take you out.
Death Caps grew in my backyard in Australia. I wasn't sure what they were either. I didn't eat it, obviously. Then, when it was time to mow my lawn, I accidentally ran over the mushroom. They never grew again, which is surprising.
There's a rule of thumb I've heard that mushrooms that grow on lawns are usually safe but ,usually, isn't certain enough. I guess you look for oak trees in vicinity but they can attach to other tree roots. Example the Saffron milkcaps are supposedly around pine trees but I've seen them growing around tea trees ,, not the camillia tea species but the Australian tea tree . Seen the fairytale mushroom too around tea trees but often without the red and white dots but some still with dots .
This is why you never eat wild mushrooms unless you know exactly what every mushroom species is, how they look, and if they're edible. If you can, get a guidebook on them.
That’s what I thought! Lol, I was like “why tf are you eating random plants in the forest, lady? Didn’t you learn anything from cartoons when the character eats deadly shrooms/berries.” Even if it looks safe, you don’t know where it’s been.
I found what were later identified as 'Destroying Angel' mushrooms on a local hiking trail. They are almost as toxic as Death Caps. Kind of unsettling when you find such toxic plants in your familiar stomping grounds.
Fungi are in an entirely separate category from plants, being taxonomically slightly closer to animals. It’s easy to assume that they’re plants, though - ferns also reproduce through spores instead of seeds.
You'd be very surprised at what's around you that's toxic or poisonous. They've been there forever. It's really no big deal unless you forage or have a kid that puts whatever's growing in their mouths or animal without the self preservation instinct. The first thing you should do when foraging is find all the poisonous look alikes, and put some time into it. I don't know how many times I've read something had no toxic look alikes or is easy to distinguish just to find out later that it wasn't the case. Most plants have some kind of a forgiveness period, but not mushrooms. Apparently almost all mushrooms are not severely toxic but the ones that are make up for all the rest. Whereas plants have many toxic members but not many as sneaky and deadly as the few deadly mushrooms.
as was already pointed out, mushrooms are no plants. funnily enough, plants can be even more dangerous as mushrooms. every mushroom, even death caps, can be touched and licked without harm. but there are some poisonous plants that cannot be touched. the toxicity of wild plants often gets underestimated, while the dangers of mushrooms are painted in the scariest shades... it's like everything else: you have to know what you're doing. if you don't, you should not do it.
Telling from the title, I thought that it was going to be a mushroom that you couldn't stand within a certain range of because it had toxic spores that would kill you
Pff, you obviously don't know of Terrance McKenna haha ;). Man was bold, wise and most certainly familiar with the specific magic of mushrooms. I have a little theory about them, I don't believe it, but I believe it possible if you know what I mean (I'm nowhere near certain of this, but consider it a viable explanation, if you do not know what I mean), and this isn't entirely my thing, but based on personal experience (I have not learned all I can from these strange creatures) and others interpretation, I think so called Magic Mushrooms might somehow temporarily plugs you into some fungal intelligence, perhaps extra galactic. Sounds pretty out there, but consider we split from fungi quite some time ago (they digest internally, we externally, that is the big difference, plus the 'farm' other organisms over their cell thick structures to give them food, shelter, and even medicines), but they were among the first things on land, and their processes, largely the release of things like oxilac acid (I might have spelt that weird, too lazy to check), into the ground broke down rocks into the first stage of what would become soil, readying the planet for plant life. So, perhaps this was some odd and ultimately random and beneficial (at least from humanities vantage point) mutation, or, perhaps there was some rough plan in place before, as I am convinced life did not start spontaneously, but was rather constructed and perhaps assumed control of (at least partially) from some force exterior, basically life pushes from the outside in, where the Will and Intelligence to manipulate the physical world come from, that I have little explanation for, its much like you must understand many scientific and mathematical concepts to properly wrap your head around physics, we don't know if life DOES push from the outside inward, and if it does, much must be uncovered before we could understand the forces shaping these things, but I do believe they exist, perhaps it is like the Russian matryoshka dolls, a never ending quest to uncover smaller and ever more complex designs, but I think there is likely 'bedrock' somewhere, some set of ultimate, incorruptible laws that govern at least this universe.
Death caps know that you just watched a video about them, and they’ve already started the process of finding and affecting your central nervous system.

Well technically the latter two are perfectly edible. One just shouldn't, as cannibalism is frowned upon in most cultures, the second example might hurt, and your friend probably wouldn't appreciate the third.
Two stories about mushrooms. Around 1964, my family lived out in the country with trees and grassy fields. An old bohemian man around 78, yes that was old back then, was sneaking around the yard, hiding behind trees, and glancing nervously towards the house. He finally noticed my mother viewing him back through a window, then quickly left the property. A couple of days later he came back and apologized for stealing mushrooms. We made it clear he could come back anytime and harvest all the mushrooms he wanted. Years later I developed and interest in foraging for mushrooms. Knowing many mushrooms are poisonous, I purchased an identification book. I looked at the pictures that showed various examples of one being a delicasy and another, looking similar, deadly! I considered this as a risky proposition, BUT never the less, being brave, I ventured out to forage mushrooms,,,,,,,,,, in the grocery store.
Some cynics say. Life is a sexually transmitted disease that is always 100% fatal. I choose to see the funny side of that and also think some of the best adventures are all about the journey.. Not the destination ;-)
I assumed the title meant the mushroom would kill you if you were in the vicinity, perhaps by releasing spores. Obviously poisonous mushrooms are bad for you.
That may be true but I trust my friends that actually go into the forest and have picked and eaten them for many years. If they've had no problem then I am assuming it's okay to eat. They know where the safe mushrooms grow.
The trips I've been having have really helped me a lot, I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future and things that used to be mundane to me now seem incredible and full of nuance on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have a lot more empathy as well
@Barbara krimbel What country are you in? Here in the U.S., it’s illegal to buy Psychedelic mushrooms, but the spores can be legally purchased online. You can then buy a sterilized grain bag for growing the spores and make your own glovebox to grow the mushrooms. Just have to do thorough research on how not to contaminate anything with bacteria and other spores in your house. No grow lights are required just dim light from the sun so a table by a window is perfect. And after your first batch of spores, you can make your own spore samples from your harvest for the next grow.
We have had of those in northern Spain for as long as I can remember. They are dangerous for people who don't know a lot of the forest because they can often be confused with the Macrolepiota procera in its first steges of growth; which is an edible mushroom with a great taste.

I doubt we will ever "master" space travel. The astronomical scales we are talking about are basically impossible to travel by means of modern technology and human biology. It would take hundreds of generations to get to a certain point if not thousands. Creating self sufficient space vessels that would last hundreds of generations is an incredible challenge in itself, not to mention the fact that humans are not built to survive in zero gravity. We lose eyesight after prolonged times in such an environment. Not only that but babies would be born with irreversible deformities that would probably significantly shorten their lifespan. Assuming the challenge of zero gravity is overcome, even the speed of light wouldn't be nearly enough to allow us to travel at a reasonable rate. So yeah, we are basically stuck here. That's also why we will never meet aliens.

yes, which is why picking mushrooms to eat is not a good idea. if you really want to learn, it takes some effort but you can meet up with a local mycological society and people there will help you. But nothing is going to replace researching the subject yourself first. As far as california goes, you avoid any normal looking mushroom or anything that is small and orange/brown. That weeds out the three deadly mushrooms. There are still plenty others that will cause you to become violently sick, but most of those taste horrible anyway. Mushrooms like Chanterelles and boletes are easy to identify and there isn't too much of a danger from mistaking those for something toxic.

The deathcap is absolutely harmless to many animals. It is deadly only to Primates and some other species, at whose the liver is connected with the guts in the "wrong" order (exhaust before intake)
In Czechoslovakia in the year 1950 there was a tragic case of a family which ate a meal made from "green champignons" (believing that they were green because they grew under trees). Who doesn't know the death cap amanita, shouldn't go mushroom hunting.
Or it's a shame when somebody mixes up Kuehneromyces mutabilis (what a crazy spelling!) or Marasmius oreades with deadly Galerina marginata... But it's quite not easy to distinguish them, they look very similar....
"Why is it so poisonous? What is it protecting itself from?" Wild guess: Maybe it's protecting itself from people who want to turn it into soup. Like, the fungus that was delicious and harmless disappeared and the fungus that was lethal thrived once people learned to stop harvesting them as food.
Could be, but there are animals that can eat them with impunity, such as squirrels and (I believe) rabbits, because their digestive juices can break down the poison whereas ours can't.
It s protecting itself from wild pigs , badgers , snails , deer ,....do you get it ? It works on all mammals the same ,they eat and then they die . All the other mammals got it ,just humans ...
it was literally one of the first things I learned about mushrooms here in germany: If it has that white ball on the stem, don't eat it. These types of mushrooms are called "Knollenblätterpilze" in german. If the green cap wasn't indicator enough we also got white ones that somehow look like big champignons except for the ball.
It is not the lookalike, color or anything by the look. It is the ground they grow, same mushroom at other place is not toxic. Same mushroom I can re-grow it in sacks, after 3-4 generations is not toxic and to not be poisonous any more, but once placed on wrong lands, it takes ground toxins again. Actually any mushroom on toxic land will be poisonous. Most poisons are from meteors or asteroids, and all plants there contain the toxins in, including any water near. Most toxins are removed with long cooking with many hours the soil, but expert should do that as breathing the air can cause same damage if not worse. Sometimes toxins are small nano-micro crystals that do not vanish even after heat, and spores of shrooms take characteristics of it without even consuming-taking it. But generally pure-clean soil is the thing.
I re-grow shrooms in underground, in small quantity for my needs only, in similar as small paper racks over each other, over simple cooked clean grass and cooked tree shavings, shred pieces of any shroom and place them over it, then cut with scissors only the largest and let other to grow. With the extra not needed at the moment, simply shred dry then shred again until completely dry, for storage powder for soups or any, for taking in bag at other place or trip. It is very good in mix with other shred vegetables, and cooking in 5 minutes is ready soup meal.
@Nikola Maric It is not rule only toxic ground (my error), poisonous fungi develop also in group with other small micro spores, case mixing more sources for different fungi development, they those toxic separate from other with defense built in against others and grow more as strongest than others with the defense toxin. Actually, any foods in past after meteor or volcano been toxic, only cultivated purified became edible. Land itself from south-pole source (continents going to end inside north-pole vortex) is already purified water (initial h2o condensed) and almost everything else toxic. With time from acids separate salt (later other heavier), also as basic element source for amplifying radiation and toxins, and oceans change pollute the environment. I.e. more precise salt kills all life except the strongest-mutations, ... that is same happens with toxic fungi. Without competence from other spores and without acid sources it-(self) reverts into 'domestic' 'cultivated', of course very long period if naturally vanished all other moss mixed with other spores. There are different substances that can disable/turn off the toxic defense creation/activation in different mutations, but is time consuming, and sources lab to have someone at hand. Of course is difficult globally on mass grounds/continents, but if someone dedicates and have free time and sources, it is achievable in separated environment. We shouldn't give/send Nikola Tesla in Wild environment to create dangerous/hidden things (that is our mistake), also shouldn't be brought long hidden radioactive bacteria from Africa to Marie (Marya) Salomea Skłodowska Curie to tell/create things that spread on wild continents into absurd bombs. The rest all we know that sun creates isotopes by transforming one to another element with distorted temperature constants, and we didn't need Nikola Tesla to tell us we have electricity channels in us for energy created from sugars, we knew before building the pyramids the concrete with glue from fungi that connects with natural calcium in cement and makes it stronger with every year passed. It is long, ... but girls are without compass, I had to write,... nadam se da se ne ljutish? @@snicker576 When foraging for mushrooms, it's important not only to be able identify edible ones, but to be keenly aware of hazardous lookalikes. Some mushrooms are much more beginner friendly than others, having either very distinctive identifiable features, or no toxic lookalikes. Oyster mushrooms, for instance, are incredibly easy to identify and so can be safely harvested by novice foragers with little cause for concern. On the other hand, anything even remotely resembling something like a death cap should be left well alone, even for experienced mushroom pickers. While there are some edible, tasty mushrooms that can look similar death caps, destroying angels, etc., even the most experienced and educated mushroom pickers will usually leave them be because they simply aren't worth the risk, no matter how confident they are with their ID. Even puffball mushrooms - a delicious species widley considered to be one of the easiest to identify - can sometimes be confused with young destroying angels (a similarly toxic relative to the death cap), and should always be cut open to confirm their ID before consumption. I'm curious as to how experienced the lady featured in this video actually is, because identifying - and knowing not to pick anything that resembles - amanitas (the family to which death caps belong) is very much required knowledge to anyone even thinking about foraging for edible mushrooms.

When I was a kid, I learned about mushrooms from a mushroom book that everyone had. The goal of that book was to clearly separate the edible from the toxic mushrooms, and provide examples of confusions that might happen, with a mantra that goes on like this: If you aren't sure, don't pick it. I'm a city dweller for my entire life, but for me the death caps are a no-brainer. When I'd be looking for mushrooms, I'd look for very very specific ones, and ignore all others. I used to do that as a kid, but also got clear advice that even if you have a death cap somewhere among the mushrooms you picked, you can still get poisoned, so the lesson was clear: do not even touch mushrooms that you don't know.
This is not true. If you eat a death cap you can get poisoned. You can't get poisoned by touching a death cap or eating a mushroom that just touched a death cap. It's a very good practice to store mushrooms that you cannot identify as edible but want to study or identify later away from those you intend to eat.

When I read the title, I thought it meant it kills you in a way where you touch it or breathe in particles and slowly die. I feel safer knowing that this only occurs when you eat them!
Are you sure there is not a way that we can breath a poisonous mushroom and we will not die or even sick

Best to get rid of them.
So that way animals and children don't eat them.
good riddance
There's a rule of thumb I've heard that mushrooms that grow on lawns are usually safe but ,usually, isn't certain enough. I guess you look for oak trees in vicinity but they can attach to other tree roots. Example the Saffron milkcaps are supposedly around pine trees but I've seen them growing around tea trees ,, not the camillia tea species but the Australian tea tree . Seen the fairytale mushroom too around tea trees but often without the red and white dots but some still with dots .

The last thing I would eat is a mushroom I found in the woods.
Why? Oleander is grown absolutely everywhere in CA. One leaf is enough to kill an adult

Ana from overwatch really?

I don't know why people are still surprised why nature is so brutal , this planet is huge graveyard .
Some cynics say. Life is a sexually transmitted disease that is always 100% fatal. I choose to see the funny side of that and also think some of the best adventures are all about the journey.. Not the destination ;-)

"Why is it so poisonous? What is it protecting itself from?"
Wild guess: Maybe it's protecting itself from people who want to turn it into soup. Like, the fungus that was delicious and harmless disappeared and the fungus that was lethal thrived once people learned to stop harvesting them as food.
Could be, but there are animals that can eat them with impunity, such as squirrels and (I believe) rabbits, because their digestive juices can break down the poison whereas ours can't.

it was literally one of the first things I learned about mushrooms here in germany: If it has that white ball on the stem, don't eat it.
Mixed dna lives forever, but also creates (defenses) things against the others, ... some humans are not different, after all we are from nature-elements planet.

Humans lookalike too. It’s like you seeing someone you love on the street, but not sure if it is the right person. But you don’t confuse your wife with someone else. You just know it.

Yeah, I mean, there are a lot of plants that can kill you easily, and no one go around talking about how bad plants are.
This is why nobody ought to eat wild mushrooms, period.
My wife and her friend collected shaggy parasols and cooked them. They were seriously delicious.
3 hours later I was as sick as I've ever been, and for 4 hours after that, from both ends. They were both fine though.
The shaggy parasol is notionally edible but, turns out, a highish percent of people have a reaction. I've never had an allergic reaction to anything before or after this.
I suggest anyone who wants to pick wild mushrooms goes on a foraging course first and has justifiable confidence in anything they put in their, or anyone else's mouth.
So sorry! Shaggy parasols can also be easily confused with green spored parasols (Chlorophyllum molybdites) which are indeed toxic.
Deep Look
We ate the same dish of diced and stir-fried mushrooms. I was the only one who had a reaction so I don't think I ate anything that they didn't. My wife's friend is experienced in foraging for them in fact, but didn't know that they can cause a reaction in a minority of people.
This sounds like a good idea for a CSI-like episode: a guy is critically sickened after his wife and her best friend all eat the same meal. Little do folks know that his plate had the dried residue of a poison from another mushroom, the Death Cap. The investigators find the women are more than just friends, and the wife had taken out a large insurance policy, unbeknownst to him. After his liver fails and a transplant can't be arranged in time, the man dies ...

My mother was emphatic that we never eat mushrooms we find. Which. Turns out I hate mushrooms anyway, but she impressed it on us from the time we were old enough to play outside.
The amanita mycelium can actually invade and grow inside other mushrooms.
@@runed0s86no. it can not. all Amanita mushrooms (some, like A. rubescens, the blusher, are edible) are mycorrhizal in nature. none of them is parasitic or able to feed on other fruiting bodies. there are seriously poisonous molds and you def should be aware of them and check if the mushrooms are not infected with molds, but "the Amanita mycelium" is nothing to worry about. nothing at all!
>do not even touch
Dude. No mushroom will kill you by touch. You have to digest the equivalent of a sugarcube in size for it to kill.
It's a symbiotic relationship, not mycorrhizal. Mycorrhizal is how mycelium grows. Relationships can be symbiotic or saprotrophic.

Actually, the Death Cap, and it's fraternal twin brother the Destroying Angel look pretty plain as far as mushrooms go.
No red with spots, or other odd colors or markings, no curly frilly edges, no odd looking mass coming out of a tree, no bad smell, stickiness, or bad taste. Death Caps- yellowish-brown with a stem and umbrella cap, Destroying Angels- white with stem and umbrella cap. Both are small and grow on the ground.
When young and their caps haven't full expanded they can kind of resemble certain edible types.
