Margery Hill & High Stones from Flouch. Is Howden Edge always windy/what's your experience up there?

  • Today, Anita and I ventured up to Howden Edge to tag Margery Hill and High Stones. (High Stones is the highest Peak in South Yorkshire). We parked at Flouch Waterboard free car park near Langsett Reservoir. The hike was 11.41 miles in total. We started off in T-shirts and then I ended up in a down coat with my hood up and thermal gloves on. Not the attire I was expecting to wear in early July. It was windy, to say the least, but we got lucky with the rain. It was spitting for about 1/2hr but nothing more. We took a lunch break for a sarnie and to camel up at Margery Stones which appeared to be the only shelter from the wind in the area. This is also a favourite spot for wildcamping. I didn't record a lot of footage on this hike due to the excessive wind noise. I have hiked up Howden Edge twice now, and both times, it was very windy. It makes me wonder if Howden Edge is one of those exposed ridges in the Peak District on which it is always windy. Along the route there were also views over Howden Dam. One other way to reach High Stones is to park at Fairholmes and hike up over Derwent and Howden Dams. All in all this was a geat little hike and a thoroughly enjoyable too.

Hi Alan, we started off in T-shirts but were in full winter clothing and thermal gloves at the top. That wind was whipping about us. It definitely blew the cobwebs away. I know, our wind was legendary. 75mph. It was definitely windy this time but not the hold on for your life windy. Plus, I did it in a much faster time, too. Whether that was not having Gales or just improving slowly in my stamina. But I still chuckle when I think of that walk. I said to Anita, 'This is where Steven asked me how I was, and I just said spent' 😂 I was still walking fine with Anita, and at 2mph logged speed, I was pretty pleased. Thank you, as always, for your support, Steven.

I had looked at the mountain weather forecast before we set out, and it said 5c in 20mph wind, so I warned Anita. I was planning to go up there in shorts, but I put my thermals on at the last minute, thankfully. I always take a jacket up there as the weather is so changeable, but I didn't expect to be in full winter gear. She is still on her Ethel Challenge, and I'm on the 88 Trig Point Challenge. So, I'm trying to plot out routes that help us both. Margery Hill was the only one I needed, but I couldn't let her hike all the way to High Stones on her own. She has a packed schedule, so once a week suits us both. Amanda hiked Higher Shelf Stones and also Crook Hill with me. Her first hike was Back Tor and Lost Lad. I would like Amanda to come out more often, but she isn't over keen. It is a long slog up from Flouch Car Park to Howden Edge Lez. Then you have what seems like an eternity to hike to High Stones. We left Margery Hill Trig for last to give us a thing rather than a pile of stones if that makes sense. Plus, you need to be refuelled by then. I've really felt this one, still hobbling today, but it was enjoyable at the time. No Deer, not even on the horizon. It's the second time I've been up there, and both times, it's been windy, very windy. Who would have thought that in July, I'd be hiking in Autumn clothing. Shanita, this was a long, long stoney path to get to Howden Edge. It is just one of those places with no shortcuts. If you come up from Fairholmes, it is more spectacular, but the hike is steeper, longer, and I have to think about that with my arthritis. It was certainly strange starting off in T-shirts and ending in full winter gear in July, that's for certain. But all in all, it is a very enjoyable hike. The Dam was quite a bit away, sadly. 11.41 miles is the shortest route to here. If we had come up via the Dam, it would have been prettier but also a 14 mile hike. This was two days ago, and I'm still aching 😂. I think new hiking shoes with padded insoles are needed. I really like hiking with Anita. We've known each other for about 10 years now, and seeing her once a week or so (depending on her schedule) makes for a really enjoyable hike. We have the same sense of humour, too, so get on well. After she completes her 95 Ethels, I hope to continue hiking with her. I wish Amanda would come, but hiking doesn't get her fired up like me. I know Dan Cunningham has wild camped at Margery Stones near the Trig before. I don't know if you follow him. But yes, it is a very enjoyable but exhausting hike. It certainly was a great place to get away. We only saw two other people on this hike. Thank you for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.

Blimey Chris, surprised you didn't get blown off the hill 😂 when did you do this walk? Surely a while ago if you were wearing gloves!

It was yesterday, Matt 5th July. T-shirt at the car park then full winter gear by the time we were on Howden Edge. I'm just glad I didn't go up in my shorts. To be honest, the mountain weather forecast said 5c in wind. It seemed colder than that. But yes, winter clothes on a summer hike, strange. Thank you as always for your continued support, Matt.
