Purple Monkey Dishwasher - LOL! Ted reminds me of the 70’s cartoon character, Hillbilly Bear, who used to shuffle, mumble, and grumble his way through every episode.
I was working for a refrigeration company in1986. The oldest compressors I ever saw were in an old ice cream factory in Galveston, TX. The date on the ammonia compressors were early 1900’s (1905?), pre-WWI.
I love your honesty and compassion Ted! So many people try to take advantage of the elderly! It's hard to find technicians like you anymore! Thanks for a wonderful video TED!
I've worked on some of those old Coleman units; were very tough and lasted a long time! Had 1750 rpm recip. compressors built to last. Then I remember old Friedrich, Janitrol and most other brands that lasted...for ever! American quality; no Chinese junk. No EPA baloney and electric rates were low so no worries about efficiency either. Sometimes the progress sold to us by corrupt politicians really hurt us all.
@@klay590 really? i thought under certain circumstances any capacitor would be able to store a charge. i like the finger test though, its either discharged or you die, either way you dont need to worry about it.

You can’t make a living being a charity but being compassionate and fair will alway pay someone back many times over, not to mention it’s the foundation of a civil society. Word of mouth goes a long way in the service industry and when people know they are being treated fairly with quality service from a compassionate person, word travels. Well done.
Cool to see old pumps still running. 👍🏼. As I told my brother wet your fingers first. Shocked the crap out of him and I can still feel the bruises 60 yrs later. Was laughing so hard I couldn’t do anything as he hit me. I enjoy your vids and learn a thing or two all the time.
Nice to see an old beast still going! Thanks. I have a York Furnace from 1986 and a Luxaire condensor from 2001 still going. Worried the time is coming to replace.
I absolutely LOVE old air conditioners and appliances. They work so much better than the new ones. Sure wish I had a fellow like you up in Canada. You know your business well, Sir! You are a gentleman and a great person. God Bless You for what you are doing. XOXO
my dads 1978 mobile home has the original coleman ac compressor and electric heater and i works perfect and looks like new still, always covered for winter an rain . and aways serviced and cleaned .
My father had a small hvac company years ago until my mother got sick. Afew of the bigger companies hated him because they did not get to go out and charge the unit with freon every year when he was done. He took there costumers for being honest like you just did sir. Most would try and sell them a new unit. On a leak my pops would repair he would pump the unit down i i think 3 psi i cant remember i was a kid. He would come back and check the unit the next day and see if it pulled in any air in to indicate any other leaks. A elderly lady called him 3 years later for a checkup and cleaning of the unit. The other company charge her unit every year for a long time.
Ty, really wish I could find an HVAC technician with your integrity down here on the sun coast When you tell a guy your mother is suffering from the heat and is in poor health don't try to sell me a hard start gismo for five hundred. not the only example but it seems I need to learn the trade myself. A word to all u hvac guys, build a customer base. Don't look for the next payday....
I hope you leave him a note to call you when the Airtemp dies. Those units are really rare and they are very dependable. I'd gladly remove this Goodman garbage from my house and put an Airtemp in.
As a kid, my parents had a 1976 Coleman LP furnace in the mobile home we used to live in. Worked really well. Also had a 1993 Coleman-Evcon packaged unit also for that house, which also never gave us any issues.
Ted... you’re a wonderful honest man. But for heaven sakes... it’s time... convert them to a 14 seer. Their power bill over 3 months can probably pay for a new one my dude🤦🏼♂️
When I moved in a few years ago, my house had a unit from 1989. The coil, I'm sure, was darn near as old. Replaced them both a year later. Due to a leak, and the fact it used R22.
Have a 1976 comfort aire Ucool unit . It has a micro channel condenser coil like a car radiator. Pre charged quick connect tubing. Has not lost a bit of factory charged r22. U Cool units from heat controller in Jackson Michigan. Made to last!!!
My neighbors was from 1987, never missed a beat. Caps and a fan motor were replaced. He got a new 410a and in one year had to have the condenser replaced. I suspect he’ll need a compressor soon enough as the guy installing cut every corner.
Great video and as always, I learn something from everyone you make. I’ve got a Janitrol from the 80’s that is still running. It’s not efficient and has a are time cooling but it still runs.
I think some folks like the bragging rights of an old system while it sucks 26amps 24hrs a day. We all have customers that we milk along for various reasons. I like that you keep it honest!!!
I just put an 06E compressor in a 40 ton unit built in 84. Old BDP unit. Coils in good shape. Had a bad power cap which burned up the other compressor. Good job. Every other company would sell them a new system
I recently worked on a Rheem from 1978. It had a fan motor that was jammed up. Looked like it wasn't original. It looked to have the original cap. Had a resistor between one terminal to another. I replaced the contactor too. Looked to be original. It ran great with the sweating beer can look on the low pressure side.
An unscrupulous technician (you know-the ones that give the trade a bad name...) would have condemned the unit and charged them thousands of dollars. Thanks for your homesty! And, you're right, they don't make them like this anymore. I know of a York Champion series vintage 1982 - at an industrial site that's still going strong!
How is someone going to condemn an AC unit??? There are fixit options and replacement options.... i understand an old furnace with a bad heat exchanger that you can condemn because its a safety issue... but who condemns an AC unit???
It makes me feel good when I or you can help somebody out with a repair or whatever needs attention. Good job.. Having the problem of not having enough time during the Monday through Friday deal and working weekends it's not a really bad problem more of a problem some people wished they had!! Monday-Friday is 7:00 till 3ish and weekends I go in around 9:00 till I get tired or a good stopping point like today I met my coworker @9:30 until 5:30 I can get so much more done on Sat-Sun since the office is closed which means my phone doesn't ring..
In 1986 I was installing General Electric central air units. Which turned out to be our new trains today or American standard the best unit on the market in my opinion. I’ve been to Tyler Texas and took the manufacturing plant tour was in the autopsy room and got a picture of my hand on the famous
You know it old when you see a Sprague capacitor. Surprise it lasted that many hours before bulging/venting? The ESR had to be high on that one, likely original as well?
My grandmother had a 2.5ton rheem from 78 that still worked great and got suckered in to a junk carrier infinity that was always broke 3 control boards in 4years and a blower motor
You might be interested in the Supco Coolpressor. Hooks to a water hose and has a very strong magnet that holds the nozzle to a compressor or a recovery tank. I just got one.
Had a Coleman from I believe 1983 that was chugging along. Pressures were right on. I think even the run caps and contactor were original too. Unfortunately the drain pan on the indoor coil was leaking bad and already took out a control board on a 2 year old furnace. Will be replacing the system next week. Can’t justify replacing a coil on a 35 yo system.
Good stuff* Walk in coolers- w/i freezers...That water hose running has been my emergency condenser fan many times at wee hours of the night when on-call with no correct replacement until supply house opened....no need for after hours opening & their fees in most cases. >Kept the "boxes" at temp nicely. ;-) Lol! I'm sure the customer appreciated you giving them some "room" off the invoice. Good to have a soft spot sometimes. (IMO)
Mine is from the early 80s it's in an apartment building inside model it's inside of a door inside my apartment. It's atleast 30 years old..atleast. wall mounted.
Most of the Lennox condensing units in my neighborhood that were installed 25-26 years ago when the homes were built are still running. My condensing unit developed a leak on the suction line next to the compressor but I fixed it with my torch. I suggest that you install a hard start kit on your condensing unit especially if you have a TXV valve. It really prevents stress on the electrical components in the condensing unit during startup. I also recommend a whole house surge protector. My furnace motor was destroyed by a power surge a couple years ago. The power surge also destroyed the compressor in my neighbor's brand new Carrier condensing unit.
Once again, we are watching an old man mumble and grunt at an AC Unit.
Life is good.

My in-laws have a 2019 Trane, still running
It's 2020 now. It better still be running after 1 year! LOL
A 1 year old train is still running. Thats not much of a feat
😂👍🏼
How’s it doing after 2 years? That would be crazy if it’s still going!!! Haha
Its 3 years old now. Is it still going? I'm very curious how well a brand new unit compares to this 84' unit.
Helping people out when you can, God love ya.
I have a 1987 Carrier, still running.
My 87 Carrier compressor just went this year. Sad day :(
Can I say I just plain like you! You are a honest good man.
I'd probably make a capacitor discharger instead of using my fingers. To each his own though.
Run capacitors don't hold a charge like start capacitors do and don't require discharging.
@@klay590 really? i thought under certain circumstances any capacitor would be able to store a charge. i like the finger test though, its either discharged or you die, either way you dont need to worry about it.

Glad you work on something that old. Too many people refuse to even look at it without replacing it.

Nice of you to cut them a break. Love all your videos. Learned quite a bit watching them.

Good job. You're a good honest man.
As AvE would say: Focus you @#%$
Who?
that unit is skocum as frig
I had one of those old beasts and it served it's purpose well. I replaced it in 2011 and it cools much better at half the cost.
wysetech2000 when you replaced your unit with the new one....what brand do you have now ?
Love your videos and your calm, easing voice. Oh yes, your HONESTY!
I still have a 1970's Whirlpool wedge running. Some of the old ones were tough for sure. The two tone RUUDs were pretty good too
God Bless you and all you do. You will surely receive many blessings in return.
I love the way you discharged the capacitor :)))

I charge $75 to replace a cap. Most places charger $100 to $125 more if the top off refrigerant.
Worked on the same year unit yesterday. Bad cfm, measured a 22° temp drop when I fired it back up. They Don’t make em like they used too

Why do people call at 4 on Sunday when the unit hasnt been cooling for 2 or 3 weeks then dont expect a service charge or overtime fee?
Mine is from 1986 and also still works!
People will complain at work how busy it is and I tell them imagine if it was the opposite
