An absolutely brilliant production- pity some can't appreciate it! Fo is one of the most inventive and creative directors ever- not a pretentious bone in his body.

I agree with Pamela Gilmore. A comedy like this screams out for over the top staging. I think the opera was wonderful.

While first listening to this beautiful music I thought it was Mozart who composed it. Luckily, there are a lot of wonderful music pieces written by other composers. I adore Amadeus, but this is gorgeous.

What a beauty! Great singing and acting. i also loved the production. I understand Italian, though in opera it is not so easy. It's a pity this is not available on DVD. Unfortunately Dutch is not so close to English, so I hardly understood a few words in the translation. It was easier to pay attention to the singing and recitatives.

I enjoyed the singing of William Matteuzzi in this piece, especially his strong, clear high notes. Unfortunately, he can't match Juan-Diego Florez on some of the runs. Compare this performance at 23:20 ff with the incredible triumph of JDF at 28:30 ff in th-cam.com/video/VCeLF3wSyMo/w-d-xo.html. Of course in Matteuzzi's defense I concede that JDF was not being mauled by fake chimps, camel and lions when he set a new standard for the bel canto tenor aria in this performance, very soon after his debut on the world opera scene (age 27).
What's wrong with the sound..?
Algiers was the most beautiful city in the Mediterranean more beautiful than Paris and Venice. The city was built by pure marble before France come and destroy all the old city in 1830..now only the old casbah stay ...thats so sad but algiers stay forever the best and magic city in the méditerranan sea
It's an old VHS recording. The tape was probably not that good anymore. But after the first minute it get's (a bit) better.
Sí, y Enzo Dara como Taddeo y Agnes Baltsa como Isabella, pero Kasarova es estupenda. Lo peor es el dispositivo escénico tan absurdo y recargado, como si el director hubiese desconfiado de la gracia de Rossini y las virtudes cómicas de la obra.
Pero no olvides que esto es Holanda. Esta es una gente discreta, aparentemente el director y se tiene en cuenta, por lo que la declaración se parece a eso.

La verdad es que los intérpretes dejan mucho que desear. De esta versión a la dirigida por Abbado y cantada por RR, Loppardo, etc. va un abismo, casi no parece ni la misma ópera.

Superb singing and music. Utterly, utterly hideous production. I feel sorry for the artists.How embarrassing for them to be put in such ridiculous stagings at the behest of some horribly pretentious director.
What a ridiculous production. Some of these Regie stage designers should be exiled to Antarctica.
