Snowblowing our 800' Driveway with a Kubota BX Tractor

- We picked up another 6 inches of snow overnight, and it was just enough to break out the tractor and clear the driveway. The Kubota BX2822 snowblower did extremely well and the BX2380 had no trouble powering it. It wasn't that much snow, but it was still a good time to get out and put the tractor through it's paces. This little sub compact continues to make life here on the homestead so much easier!

Nice video! BTW - you have a lot invested in your tractor and set up - might be a good idea to buy a $50 cover to place over the machine when sitting outdoors...keep the weather off of it and helps to preserve it. When you want to use it - there is not snow all over it either ( added bonus). Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jackie nice vid. Tell your husband to carry extra sheer bolts and the correct size
ratchet/wrench with him so when he breaks a bolt down by the dumpster he doesn't have to drive all the way back to the garage to fix it. You tell him your the boss!
Hello from the great state of NJ! Had breakfast with Mom and dad Sunday while you guys were clearing up the snow. Totally understand not dropping that blower all the way down. That thing will throw rocks into the next county, chip all of the paint off the inside of the chute and break shear pins like nobodies business. Really enjoy the channel. The dog likes that snow. @@TheMindfulHomestead Hi there, sounds good and like the homestead life. Check out a youtuber named " Doberfag" they moved out west and are doing a similar thing. Some adult language and their son is having a health issue so they stopped making videos but they have a very cool out in the woods place.
I'm on my 3rd winter with the same model blower on a BX2680. I have about double the area as you and I can't heap enough praise on this set up. Knock on wood, it has been absolutely trouble free and I've been lucky to only replace 1 shear bolt. Enjoyed your video.
rottiman100 Thanks for the comment! We’d certainly go through fewer shear bolts if the driveway was in better shape. We’ll be taking care of that this summer!
How do you like your BX2680? I am currently doing research on getting one, and was thinking the BX2680 for the extra PTO horsepower...for the little extra overall cost I'd rather have the larger engine. I understand these tractors do not have any of the emissions stuff on them either, until you get to the B-Series models. I don't need a huge tractor and space is limited plus I only have an acre so the BX2680 would handle everything I need to do just fine with a loader, roto-tiller, and box scraper...and who knows what else, I keep finding more and more videos of good attachments to possibly purchase as well.
Have you had any issues with your tractor, that a new/first time tractor buyer should be aware of? Don't care for John Deere's proprietary attachment options they seem to keep carrying on year after year, and my old neighbor had a Kubota BX and upgraded to a B later on. He loved his and never had any problems.
That was a nice little storm, and it was so sunny and beautiful the day after. Glad to hear the Kubota is living up to your expectations. I'm really considering getting a tractor, and they're certainly on the short list.
And my walk-behind snowblower does the same with picking up rocks, especially if the ground isn't frozen and you get we snow. Snapping pins constantly if the shoes are too high. That's why I bought the plow before our second winter!
If you can swing a tractor, it makes life so much easier. A plow is definitely faster, but being able to put snow exactly where you want it is clutch!

It made me chuckle you guys said snow blowing the driveway and then I saw the shovel... LOL .. anyway we do the same thing you have to do both.
The shovel and the snowblower go hand in hand! Well, the shovel goes in the hand and the blower on the tractor. But I guess the steering wheel goes in the hand? It’s complicated. 😂

Oh man I couldn’t handle having fix pins all the time
SunnySlope Homestead haha. You end up getting pretty quick. They become more of a nuisance than a problem.
I'm not trying to criticize anybody with this statement. This is purely to get opinions from others that do this
Your shear pin and gravel driveway lead me to a question. It's not something specific to your situation, but a lot in general when it comes to subcompact and compact tractor vidoes on snow removal? Why not use a front mount plow? Don't get me wrong, if it's a budget thing I completely understand. But it seems like 95% of videos are guys blowing a couple inches of snow. A plow increases your fuel economy almost to the point of paying for itself. Factor in the wear and tear on the tractor as well is another cost savings.
I do a lot of plowing as well. 98% easily is gravel/dirt. For a BX2230 anything under 14" is an automatic plow. With my B7800 I plow everything up to 2'. I do a lot of allies, driveways, as well as some smaller (biggest holding 30 cars smallest holding 6 cars) parking lots.
I do have the front mount snow blowers for both. A bucket for the B7800. And I added box blades to the back of both for clearing out between cars and such in parking lots. The shear pins, blowing snow, and fuel consumption kill me with the snow blowers. Fluid filled yard turf tires with no chains. Central Pennsylvania.
What are your, and others, thought?
Nice job man! Beautiful home stead too BTW.. if I broke sheer pins that often I would be going this a stronger pin/bolt even tho it would void warentee I’m sure it would be fine 😂
Thanks for the compliment. We've been busting our butts to work it into a great place to live. The thought of picking up a tougher bolt or piece of allthread to run has certainly crossed my mind. Luckily, I've honed my technique and gotten pretty quick at swapping them out, so it's not the end of the world!
The shear pins are meant to break before you bend or break components on the blower, so putting a stronger bolt in there completely defeats the purpose of the pins. Sounds great while you are replacing pins to want to upgrade to a grade 5 bolt, but don't, you'll cause a lot of damage to the blower as a result. The impellers will hit obstacles and just get bent up and broken rather than stopping and breaking the shear pin instead.
Look at your owners manual for the blower. You got the auger set wrong when you replaced the shear bolt. Easy mistake to do but your blower will handle more snow faster when augers are set right.
If you’re referring to the orientation on the shaft, they are supposed to be 180° out from one another.

Yea. Admittedly I’m super bad about it. A lifetime of rock concerts and shooting have kind of numbed me to how loud the tractor actually is. Thanks for the reminder.
We lived in the Lake Erie snow belt, and hosted exchange students from Europe. I am well versed in Metric, so gave them the snow statistics in centimeters. When I told our French exchange student to expect light snow, only 15 - 18 cm overnight, she thought I was exaggerating. We actually got a first snowfall of 27 cm, and dug out the 35 meter drive by hand...
Her comment, while helping dig out was, "Why do you live here! Aren't there places with less snow?"
So we took a ride to the ridge overlooking the lake. They got 110 cm of snow the same night, and everyone was already dug out by noon. I said, "Move? Why?? This is just a dusting! You should see the bad storms..."
She did not complain about our drive again, heh...
Try outing a piece of PVC on the cutting edge of the blower
We’re actually going with 2 inch gas pipe. I’ve got it laying around and PVC would break on our drive in a hot minute.
You did spray your discharge chute as well as your impeller with cooking spray or WD40 before you began right? Makes a world of difference when it come to throwing sticky snow.....Try it
We use an industrial nonstick Teflon spray, but yea.

We have just over ten acres. It’s pretty flat, with a very slight grade from the rear 5 acres, which is mostly pine and hemlock, to the front 5 which is a lot of maple, oak, and beech.
You’re right about the rear blower. With as long as the driveway was, I didn’t want to be turned around in the seat. The front mount cost more, but it was worth it.
I have a 2380 and use the back blower. No problem turning around just put one knee on the seat while standing and facing back plus I made some mirrors and use those to keep me in line when I sit down to go backwards. My drive is 600 feet long but still no problem. All works great.
I think i would some how find a shelter for the kubota instead of living it out in elements, u guys have lots of lumber around, cut some 12 feet logs and split them in the middle and some how get the kubota sheltered, for the amount of work that thing is capeable of doing it just needs to be sheltered well, otherwise thank u for sharing guys.

Farmish Kind of Life Assuming I’m not swapping shear pins every 5 minutes, I can do it end to end in about a half hour. Not as fast as plowing, but not having to worry about moving piles of snow halfway through the season makes it worth it.
Why don`t you have the driveway black topped and then you can snowblow right to the asphalt?
If we make enough money on YT, maybe one day that’s a possibility. 😉
As of right now, the quotes we got last year put that at a $20-35k job.
Just curious if you find the chute rotation fast and hard to control? On our BX2380 with the 2822 commercial blower I have a hard time getting the chute to stop where I want it to. Wonder if find that as well. Ours has the Tektite heated cab and it doesn’t matter what the wind conditions are! I guess the only issue is that it’s extremely difficult to remove the cab. Luckily I’ve only had to replace two shear bolts on the blower since I’ve had the tractor . You are very fortunate to be living where you are. I have more hours on the BX2380 so far this winter than all of last winter. Merry Christmas
Not really. I honestly just tap the stick quickly if I need it in a certain spot. The can sounds nice. I think my next tractor will have a cab, maybe, I don’t know. I keep going back and forth on it.
The one good feature of the Tektite Cab is that it qualifies for Roll Over protection so I could remove the ROPS on the BX. I can honestly say that I love the cab. I see even GP Outdoor has finally broke down and bought a cab. I often don’t even turn the heat off and I love the fact that I can see out of my glasses!

I grew up on a farm and farmed for many years. Our John Deere tractors all had an adjustment to reduce the volume of hydraulic oil flow near the hose connectors. If yours is not adjustable you can purchase a valve that will do the same thing. These can be placed anywhere in the hydraulic circuit such as near the cylinder. Oil may flow a bit faster when the oil is warm.
Perhaps at least put a tarp over your tractor when not in use. Rust is so damaging and many levers can freeze up.
Would a plow be a better tool for clearing the driveway of snow?
You mention no try able to climb hill to shed. Is the tractor unable to climb a snow covered hill?
If so, what makes this particular hill difficult.
I would have to slide slope it, not go up or down or. In slippery conditions, it’s too risky a move for almost any tractor.
How steep is that hill? I have an asphalt driveway with a 30 degree slope and wondering if the tractor would make it snow and ice.
I have another question for ya... I used my 2816 blower for the first time Saturday and I sucked up a stone and broke my fan bolt.. it looked like a little Allen bolt maybe a 6mm one from the factory.... I got extra shear bolts with the blower and fan bolts are much bigger and are a 7/16 bolt heads. Definitely fit the hole better.. What's your take on this? The factory threw whatever they had in the fan for a bolt or what?
bombidude There is a different shear on the impeller if it’s the one I’m thinking you broke.
Different shear pins in the augers than the impeller. Typically you are going to hit something with the auger first which breaks a shear pin before the object enters the impeller, but occasionally something will get through both. So yes they have different pins, and some are hex head bolts, and some are allen head.
Is your whole driveway gravel, or is it sealed with just loose bit here and there? Wondering because I have a 1/4 mile drive and I've been looking into compact tractor and it looks like the blower is so easy!
It's alllll gravel. Well, dirt and gravel and boulders. But yea. No sealer or asphalt here.
What do you have a bulk diesel tank? I noticed the fuel is died.. You must get delivered?
We have a local station that sells untaxed diesel for off road use only. Saves us a little bit of cash.

That’s Finn. He’s definitely at least part Swissy, but he was rescued from out for state and neutered at a week old, so he never quite filled out like they normally do.
My tractor stays in the garage, even if the wife's car has to sit outside.
Jdubski NC I could swap the tractor and the boat, but then the boat ends up ratty as all get out in the spring right when the best salmon fishing is happening.
