I'm 73 years old and a Dorset girl. I remember making these with brass rings in the school playground. I'm not sure that we actually finished them but they were fun to do!

You put out another wonderful episode! Now I’m going to have to make buttons (so fun!) and Carol’s top is so stunning I don’t think I can *not* get the pattern. Andrew’s sweater is perfection. Wow. Beautiful work Andrea. Peruvian knitting is fascinating! I’m happy to be a patron. Everyone, and I mean everyone, should be one. Your show is the most valuable one on the internet. Thanks once again!

The Dorset buttons are absolutely gorgeous. The colours are so vibrant. Such a fascinating history. The button brooches on those beautiful shawls are just exquisite.

I meant to comment on this one earlier. I have been to Peru, and it was interesting to learn about these techniques. I saw the hats there, but I didn't learn anything about the special knitting techniques. One thing that was amazing was to see the mountain women spinning yarn on drop spindles while just walking along. We also got to meet llamas and alpacas, even in the city streets of Cuzco. They also roam loose at Macchu Pichu. Also everywhere you go they do play that type of local music with the pipes.

Wow!! Handsome Andrew!! Andrea-you are amazing!! I need to step up my game!! You are a master of the "Fitting a Garment " to the wearer and design adjustment!! Truly skilled!! BRAVO!! Thanks for another great episode. Almost 30 years ago I saw these buttons on a hand-knit garment made by one of my colleagues and they really added that final icing to her garment!!

The pullover/jumper is quite lovely. I really appreciate your dedication to getting it right for his torso/body type. Can’t tell you how many times I gave up making something for my husband because of it not looking or fitting him, (in my eyes) just right. While he’s a real sport and wanting to wear the sweaters I’ve attempted, Im just not happy with the items. Thanks for sharing your expertise and drawings. When I finish my current wips, I will make an attempt to try this with your modifications.

I visited Skye way back in the 80s, but I was not able to discover all the beautiful island. So sad. One day, I hope to come back again. The beautiful autumnal colours of Scotland will stay in my mind forever and I hope to recreate the colours in the buttons that I want to make.

I love the optical illusion on Andrew's new jumper. At first glance it looks like he is wearing a short sleeve T over a striped shirt. Then you think, " Hey wait a minute. That's a lot of shirt showing below a cut off T." That's when the perspective part of my brain corrects itself and I see the jumper as a whole garment. It's a reaction that only lasts a second, but really cool. The way the pattern matches exactly between the sleeves and body is really cool, too. Bravo, Andrea! It's gorgeous!

I love this series and especially the information about Dorset buttons. I have been collecting images of them for a long while. I want to add, too, that I was in Australia last month on a knitting cruise. I was delighted to discover that I was on a farm you had featured about Polwarth sheep...it was purely by coincidence. Tarndie Thank for all your fabulous information on the many facets of knitting.

Dorset buttons have inspired me! I am going to put buttons on all of my shawls. I had no idea about the history of Dorset buttons. I learned to make crocheted buttons from my mother, but just thought everybody made them, at least everybody who sewed, knitted, embroidered, and crocheted. Hmm? When you are a child, you think crafting is just normal. It's true, a lot more people did make clothes back in the 1950s, but not everybody. There were lots of people that didn't make things. Afterall, it was the beginning of our consumer culture and many people thought store bought was something special.

Loved the Dorset buttons! Going to have to make me some of these!!!
I also knit Peruvian or Portuguese style. I have just started to learn to knit and was shocked at how hard it is for me when all the other needlework styles are not! Tried continental style because I crochet and thought it would be easier. It wasnt because of my tensioning muscle memory from crochet. Worked at it 3 days and my hands hurt so much and I was ready to give up until I took Andrea Wong's craftsy classes on Portuguese style knitting and found it is definitely the knitting style for me!!! I have a long way to go but just couldn't let knitting beat me!!! LOL

What a beautiful double feature! I have always wondered about those little buttons I've seen on old clothing. I've only seen the built-up white ones with the horn base, and they are so fine and shiny like little pearls. I never would have guessed that they were made by hand.

I can't believe it, I was actually at the Dorset Buttons stand on Saturday at Yarnporium. Lovely people. I used to make Dorset buttons when I was a child - even though I come from the Midlands. When I moved to Dorset for college I couldn't believe that the skill had almost disappeared in Dorset itself.

I get my bi-monthly giggle with you guys 😁 Checking him out indeed. Good work “Dolls” 🤗 You and Andrew never disappoint. I know he feels exposed sometimes but truly, that’s the kind of marriage your daughter will want for herself and therefore you are her best role models in what to look for and expect in her life.
It’s “knitting deconstructed” for the “fitted” garment. Perhaps that’s why I knit for myself alone most of the time because I tailor the knitted piece to my fit. And now I think I will finally adopt a Colourwork method, Peruvian, Wow! I love that over the neck, thumbs, method. I can’t imagine why the style diminished in Europe. The method is a no-brainer really because it allows for a greater control of the yarn and is less of a strain on your forearms. I can’t wait to make Dorset buttons because I have wanted to make them for a long time now. I knew of their existence for years as I saw museum photos somewhere that I can’t remember. That’s one of the parts where getting older is no fun. The memory thing. Thanks again for a lovely informative podcast Andrea and Andrew. And yes, I’m up at two in the morning watching it. I woke up and could not sleep and thought “Why don’t I watch the new podcast with Andrew and Andrea?” Good show guys 👍😀

Another fabulous episode. I now have a strange question in my mind. My mother z"l made Dorset buttons. I can't imagine how she came on the technique. She was born in Danzig (Gdansk) before WWI, and lived in Poland. We came to the USA in the early 50s. Where could she have picked up the craft? Seeing Tanya work on her buttons brought back the memory of my mother making all size buttons, only in white thread.

It would have been nice if she had shown us how to lay the spokes, to do the center knot...She was quite a lovely person, however I really couldn’t see enough to be able to do it on my own.
