    Thanks Noel, I just rode my Modern 2 for the first time. I’m running the Merrick twin plus 1 setup. I held them up to the MR twin fins and they are very similar but the slimmer tip on the Merrick’s really lets you load up more quickly when you’re pumping for speed in sub par conditions. The V in wider boards is key which I why I went with this over the Merrick Twin but I got it two inches longer for float - this is the magic board at 6’2- I’m 200 lbs in a wetsuit. You are hands down the best board reviewer, THANK YOU!

    Hey Noel. Just wondering if you'll ever do a review on the Modern 2.5? Would love to hear the comparisons between the Modern 2 and the 2.5 and how different they surf.
    Love your reviews!
    Cheers

    Hey Noel, I was stoked to revisit this review and much appreciate the detail. I ended up snatching one of these up this afternoon via Craigslist at a great price - 5'6" size (I'm 5'9" 155lbs) and I'm gonna run either the MR Twin plus trailer or my much loved Tyler Warren twin plus trailer. I know it's meant to be a small wave board and I intend for it to be mostly for that around SD and OC but I'm also looking forward to seeing how it goes in the overhead range, too. Sometimes during a session the average waves can be chest/shoulder high but those standout sets come around every so often and can push a foot or two overhead so I'm hoping this can handle that. Obviously Filipe rides it overhead in the videos but I'm hoping a layman can too. Thanks for the great detail in your reviews, really helped me make a decision on this as well as the 5'9" Holy Grail I picked up earlier this year (again via Craigslist) that's been my daily driver and favorite board I've ever owned - been running it with Twin plus trailer in all types of waves from reefs to beach breaks 3-9 foot faces and felt like there was still more headroom on the board though at the higher end I'd go thruster or quad. I'm hoping this Modern 2 will be that 2-7 foot faces daily driver and still be doable up to 9 foot faces.

    Quick question. How is the board in regards to durability. I find that I pressure dent my PU boards quite easily comparing that to my Firewires, they are rock solid. Is the Fusion e2 closer to PU or Firewire.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thom Ye The FireWire LFT and HE constructions are pretty durable. The Fusion E2 is in between the PU and the FireWire LFT. PU’s are pressure dent pretty easy and I think a regular EPS foam blank is roughly 20-30% stronger when it comes to pressure dents. The HE by FireWire is the most durable and has the best flex compared to anything else I have tested.

  • @UniqueStranger

    Have you tried reversing the fins by using a larger fin in back and smaller fins on the side? The large back fin tends to give more drive.

      I have, your pivot is farther back than pivoting off the front fins. But, it has tremendous amount of hold for really big hard driving bottom turns.

    Awesome review. If I have a 6'1" Rocket Wide PU at 38 liters and I want a Modern 2, would you recomm2nd the 6'0" at 36.4 or the 6'2" at 38.5 liters? Both options would be in E2 construction.

    hey noel, quick question- I find twin + trailer is great for smaller mushier surf. With this type of shape, when the surf picks up, and when I want more control does a set of thruster fins help give me a little more control and slow it down a little? I know the fin placement is slightly different for these two and if there are any drawbacks to having this type of shape be an all around board just by switching out fins. thanks

    Hi, what's the main feeling difference in between this board and the Haydenshapes Untitled one?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This Modern 2 feels like a true groveler and the Untitled has hidden foam and feels like a small wave performance board. The Untitled is way more progressive in the pocket. The Modern 2 has a performance feel for a Twin Fin and goes good in 1-3' surf. I would not choose to ride this Modern 2 in surf over 4' but I would have no problem surfing the Untitled in waves up to 6'. I hope this helps.

    Hey Noel, Im wondering what the difference is between a rounder template compared to a board with more parallel rails. Perhaps you could start a video series about some of the different board characteristics i.e. tail shape, rockers, fin configurations, and so on. I think they would get a ton of views. What Channel Islands board would you recommend for the following conditions? An outside peak with 4-5 ft. faces that are slopey to medium steep that breaks into a flat spot, then reforms into 1-2 ft. face that is slopey to medium steep. I have a 5'2"x18 3/4"x2 1/4" squash tail, high-performance, small-wave board and my weight varies between 150-160 lbs. I may be too heavy for this board. It works best for me on reef breaks and it paddles into waves best for me under the lip. I have to pump hard and plenty to get through flat spots and this board pivots in a very short space. When I frontside cutback to rebound, it happens very fast as though it happens in the same space. I like to feel the rail engage a bit more. I also have to back off a bit when doing backside snaps because it feels like it's going to fly out if I go vertical.

    Hey Noel, in a comment on the BSR results video I compared this to the Astropop since they seemed so similar to me in outline and foam distribution and their intended surf conditions. You mentioned they're quite different so I'd love to hear a bit more about your thoughts on that and maybe it'd help those watching this video possibly comparing boards. If not Astropop what other board would you compare modern 2 to? I rode it today in really bumpy overhead crossed up SD reefs with MR twin plus trailer and it was insane at making sections, so fast. I would have ridden my holy Grail normally but I wanted to test this board in it's upper range of wave size and bumpy to see if it works at all and I was really pleasantly surprised. My main quiver now is 5'6" Modern 2 for 2-7 foot faces, 5'9" Holy Grail for 4-9' faces, and 6'1" Pyzalien as my step up for 6-10' faces. (I'm 5'9" 150lbs). Thanks for all your help to the community!

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Perlaky That Modern 2 has a ton of Vee from what I remember.. and that convex bottom really separates it from a lot of other Groveler type boards in comparison. It does hold well in a little bigger surf but the ride is unlike the Astro Pop due to it having a single to double concave on the bottom with a little Vee out the tail. The concave is faster causing the board to have lift and skip across the water. The Modern 2 with a convex bottom will do the opposite... as it picks up speed it will sit down a bit in the water and help the board roll over on rail and give it good hold.

    • @SecretReefs
      @SecretReefs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@surfnshowreviews7777 awesome that's super helpful distinction. Compared to the Holy Grail (in one session so far but same find) the Modern 2 has a lot more speed, but then the Astropop would have even more and world shine in the lower gutless range. The Modern 2 has the versatility then that I needed cause it's got plenty of ability to clear weak sections while turns and hold at speed were there too and for me a single session could have the need to make both weak and stronger waves. Thanks.

It works great in little waves but is a little slow when it gets into bigger surf. By the way I am 5 foot 11 and 145 pounds at 13 yrs of age (still growing). I am looking for a board that I can take out in bigger surf more towards the 5-8 foot range. Do you think the channel islands fever would be a good board for that? If so what dimensions would you reccomend. If not do you know of any other boards that would be good for me? (I like Channel islands because I get a 40% discount on boards because my cousins are team riders).

      Earthling of the Sea So stoked you like our show. The Pod Mod is so good and yes I think the Fever would be great for you.
      One thing concerns me is the volume at 38 Liters on your PM is a lot. When you get on a Fever your gonna have to work hard paddling and the Fever is going to be very loose and responsive compared to your PM. I suggest the 6’1” if this will be your first HP board or a little bigger. Maybe you should consult with your cousins who are team riders to help you too.

    Hii, how is this board to compare with lost rnf96?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      96 offers more performance and it can shred bigger waves too. I like the 96 better and it’s super fun as a pure twin fin

    I dont think ive ever seen a convex bottom on a performance shortboard before. Im shaping (or trying to shape) a performance twin fin like this board but i was just gonna do a single to double to v out the tail but maybe i'll give the convex a try. Most of the twin fins ive ridden felt a little sticky going rail to rail so i could see why he did that.

      ryan rowe So Sick.... I would love to hear how that goes for you. Maybe you could shape one and tell me how it goes after you shred it a bit? If you shape it with a convex bottom please snap a shot of the board and email it to me. Noel@surfnshow.com. Cheers

      The Modern 2.5 is epic in 1to 3+ft waves! Lot of speed and drive and very easy rail to rail transitions. Good on the pocket also. I can tell you is my best groveler board ever!!! (I have a 5´4" in Dual Core and I use AM 2+1 twin fins setup). Cheers.

    Noel. I'm on the fence between the 5'8 (31.6L) and the 5'10 (34.2) modern 2. I usually ride around 33L. Do you recommend I go with more or less volume?

    How u compare the modern2 and the rocket9?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      djpipe1 The Modern 2 is more of a Groveler and super fun in 1-3+. The Rocket 9 feels more like a short board and goes good in 2-6’+ surf. When you see both of these two boards in person side by side they look and feel completely different. The volume in the nose and chest area on the Modern 2 makes it a legitimate small wave board.
