Probably one of the characters which the novel (and by extension the games) take the most liberties with. This is another of the few characters whose look I think has improved with each game (except 6 ofc). With the right items he was pretty OP on horseback in 3-5. Very useful for large maps. Unfortunately his moveset has lost a lot of it’s uniqueness especially because now he shares his weapon with the generic npcs. I still feel like I wanna play him tho. My biggest problem with Ma Chao is his story. Admitedly I think this is just a wider issue that has been ongoing since DW6 but I think Ma Chao has suffered a lot of this. Though never a super complex character Ma Chao has always been about Justice. Now before to him it was Justice=Revenge and I really liked that. Ma Chao wanted Cao Cao's head on a pike (or I guess spear lol) and that was why he rebelled at Tong Gate it also explanined why he joined Liu Bei (Cao Cao's sworn enemy) and it was a specific clear motivation that was really different from the rest of his Shu team mates. Nowadays for Ma Chao Justice=???. He's become really weak as a character. Does justice mean he wants Cao Cao dead? only at Tong gate it seems. Is it protecting people, loyalty, the Han or something else? It's very unclear and makes Ma Chao seem really weak or generic. I feel like Koei is somewhat aware of it and maybe they just hate Ma Chao because after they added Ma Dai he brings it up he says something like "OK you got revenge where do we go now". IDK Ma Chao is very popular even now so maybe I'm just being dumb or something but it bothers because... Real Ma Chao was a pretty interesting figure. Pretty brutal and vicious Ma Chao was the only one of Liu Bei's generals to have been a warlord himself. The general assessment I make him was that he was a good warrior as demonstrated in his campaigns against Yuan Shao and by Cao Cao's own admission, he was also charismatic able to convince a former enemy of his father like Han Sui to join him but he was also impulsive and without a good grasp of strategy and planning. Very similar to Lu Bu imo. Though I do think the crtiticism of him are valid I feel like those same crtitiques apply to Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan but I guess because Ma Chao failed a lot more than them then they stand out more. I feel game Ma Chao would be greatly benefited from incorporating more of his dark history into his character as well as his strong personality from the books he could be a very compelling character its sad how they change him he was one of my favorites. Sorry for the Essay lol.
Nah the essays are always great, I enjoy reading them. And for me, they just need to do something with it. Whether that be his dark history or giving a new purpose that extends past vengeance. I was shocked to see so little content for him when I was doing his video. But with him being so popular you would think they would invest more into him. I've always liked ma chao and the presence he has, hopefully they give him more going forward
One thing I remember from DW4 regarding Ma Chao was his charge attack while on a mount. He'd spin his spear above his head and create a shockwave. It was really cool
Agreed, he’s older moveset was the best if not one of the best in the entire game. Also fun fact he got punked out by Guan Yu during ceremony lol. Had to come back and edit my message because I didn’t think you were going to bring the story up but, yes that’s what I’m talking about. He did find out that they wanted to kill him and he corrected the way he spoke to him from that point on lol.

@@TheNightowlGaming the Five Tiger Generals of Shu Han Guan Yu- The Glorious Bearded Tiger Zhang Fei- The Drunk Tiger Zhao Yun- The Noble Tiger Huang Zhong- The Old Tiger Ma Chao- The Tiger of Justice
Ma Chao defeated Xiahou Yuan, was the leader of a rebellion of foreign tribes and Han people that numbered over 100 000 which put up a good fight against Cao Cao and almost killed him, by his sheer presence Liu Zhang surrounded. He was also known as an exceptional warrior and was deeply trusted by the nomadic tribes. He did a lot historically.
Eh I think it’s a matter of perspective. Consider also that most of his battles were against Cao Cao and you can practically count ppl who defeated him with your fingers.
Bruv Ma Chao is truly unable not he didn't or missed anything, he just can't take Wang Yi seriously, from his standpoint he just has too many things going on to care about a widow
Just some clarification/trivia: The incident with Zhang Fei and Guan Yu is most likely fictional. First of all Guan Yu never went to Yi province as he was so busy in Jing Province. Also Zhang Fei was not noted to have disliked Ma Chao and they were actually paired together in the Hanzhong campaign. This seems to originate from a much more believable record of Guan Yu sending a letter to Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang questioning them for accepting Ma Chao and promoting him. Zhuge Liang wrote back to him to get him to drop it tho. Also interesting: at Liu Bei’s acension to King( or Prince) of Hanzhong he was the highest ranking Han official in Liu Bei’s faction. This due to receiving titles from the Han court under Cao Cao since Ma Chao had actually fought for Him in his northern campaigns against The Yuans. I believe he was General who conquers the west or something and a Marquis I think this was like one step below or above Liu Bei’s title of General of the left.
Keep in mind these conflicts take years. It's a simple enough matter to travel. Ma Chao was chasing Cao Cao for about three years. It's not just one quick battle like in the games.
Love the dude sucks what he did too wang yi but playing him gotta agree his moveset is just o p his 2nd ex was the best dw5 was his best look awesome vid as always got my like 👍🏾
From what I understand about Ma Chao he killed some people. Wang Yi's son included. After agreeing to peace. Ma Chao betrayed the negotiations he agreed too. I know people with an inflated sense of justice are deluded hypocrites. This only proves it. More interesting yet, Ma Chao's wife and Wang Yi actually got on before Wang Yi's son was killed by Ma Chao. I think Ma Chao over inflates his ego because he's desperate to make it mean something. After Tong Gate he doesn't amount to much though. Wang Yi doesn't seem to go after him either. Maybe she came to terms with the fact it was two warriors fighting on a battlefield. It's also worth noting that Ma Chao died in his early 40s yet it's not explained why that is. Wang Yi did try to poison herself once. It's possible she may have poisoned Ma Chao and got her revenge then. Or maybe Ma Chao broke his word one too many times and paid the price for it. Ma Chao is actually a bit more complex out of the games. The games don't do too well showing his background enough (like with most DW characters). He's playing the hero. He's living a lie. It's not explained clearly why he does what he does (in or out of the games). I do however know the personality type and seen the patterns enough times to have an idea. Ma Chao is conflicted with himself. His sense of "justice" being a mask for his hate.
I can definitely see that, a conflicting character trying to overcompensate for the person he is whether he's self aware of it or not. Regardless, the game does a great job displaying this character and hopefully they build more upon him in future games
