13:46 actually childish is EXACTLY the word! The main character is a "child" and a evil one at that. Aoi Yuuki is the singer of the ED and the protagonist's VA, so she basically sings in character.

The lyrics of the NHK song are about wanting to be a baby because babies are loved unconditionally.
It fits the theme of the show which is about a depressed and delusional shut-in.
The song sounds humorous and mischievous because the speaker is tricking the adults into loving him and he's really into it.

The Ouran ED has an infamous guitar riff that plays right during the ending scenes of each episode before the actual song kicks in. It’s never part of the official song and listening to the song without that riff always felt incomplete for me. Hope you’ll get the chance to hear that part one of these days.

The story of Welcome to the NHK is mainly about a shut-in NEET main character and his potential and gradual recovery journey with the help of other people. The first song was sang by the voice actress of the little girl in the picture..
Yuki Aoi had a few very manic / crazy songs under her belt. (not sure if they were all anime)
And Yuki herself is pretty tiny in real life, the actress, like 4'10" or something - but her voice carries and she is one of the biggest name in voice acting right now.

43:33 "NHK" is a reference to the Japanese public broadcaster "NHK" (Nippon Hoso Kyokai). In _Welcome to the NHK_ the protagonist believes it's actually a secret conspiracy to turn people into shut-ins called "hikikomori", with the secret meaning being "Nihon Hikikomori Kyokai". As anyone who lives in Japan will tell you though, the only conspiracy the NHK is involved with, is trying to ambush you and make you pay television licence fees, *even though you don't watch the NHK, goddammit!*

The thing about Ouran's OP (which is one of my favourite of all time, btw), is that the series came out in 2006.If you think about other popular series coming out at the time, like Naruto or FMA, this slightly post-punk "grungy" feeling in the guitar + drum + voice mixing is present there as well. I think it was the influence of how popular nu-metal was within the animé space, and the japanese 'kei' thing that was very popular at the time.

In short, the context of Welcome to the NHK is how many episodes you can watch without depression making you want to jump off a bridge. It has its positive and overcoming message at the end, but seriously, that series is like a knife cutting veins. All the social anxiety, paranoia, social criticism and existential anguish that is shoved down your throat is not easy to digest.

  • @antonsidorov7531
    @antonsidorov7531 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The NHK Ending is actually ingenius (besides just the fact it's a cool song). It fits into the context of the story on multiple levels.
The protagonist of the story is an infantilie shut-in, and his main love interest is equally infantile girl with a savior-complex who both, due to their unique circumstances, have been isolated from society and couldn't exactly grow up into normal responsible adults. And the story of the anime basically describes a book-case co-dependent relationship between them.
The song is prety much their hymn (more so of the protagonist than the love interest, admittedly). It's so EDGY exactly because that's how the characters see the world. It's lyrics are about how the world is cruel to grown-ups and it's better to stay a baby forever to be loved, as all the babies are loved regardless of their "worth". While also going into the territory of delusions of grandeur (as in "We babies will conquer the world!"), which represents a very common feeling of underserved entitlement baby-adults have in real life.
I watched the anime in my early 20s (and read the original novel around the same time too) and it was one of my favorite anime for a long time. Back then all I could think about it was "wow, this is literally me!". All the context described above was completely lost on me. Now, in my 30s, it's very apparent.
The finale of the anime feels completely different now. Back then I used to think of it as a "happy ending". But no... it's more like the ending of The Graduate.
I still love the anime and the novel to this day, but for very different reasons.
Apparently, the author of the original novel wrote it based on his own experinces. And as far as I know, he never published anything else ever since.

Never left a comment on any of your videos before but I just got done watching your Bocchi the Rock and Sound Euphonium reactions over on patreon and I cannot recommend enough an anime called Kids on the Slope. It's a short 12 episode drama about an introverted classical pianist in 1960's Japan learning to break out of his shell after discovering a new found love for western jazz. This show is criminally underrated and is genuinely one of my favorite shows of all time. I don't really know shit about playing music but I think it has some of the most realistic and well animated music playing I've ever seen, it's animated by the same studio that did Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Hell's Paradise. Anyways, awesome video as always and would love to see you react to Kids on the Slope sometime in the future.

To add some additional context to Welcome to the NHK, "NHK" stands for Nippon Housou Kyoukai which means Japan Broadcasting Corporation.
It exclusively owns rights to all forms of broadcasting in Japan, making it effectively a state-approved private monopoly.
The main character believes that the NHK is responsible for a conspiracy to monitor and control his life, hence the title of the show.

I highly suggest giving welcome to the nhk a try one of these days. I've been watching anime for 5 years and it remains to be one of my favorite animes. One of its strengths in my opinion in particular is their soundtrack. Everything about the soundtrack was tailor-made to fit with the themes present and enhance the viewing experience and I think in general the show simply does what it needs to do at a very high level and it's quite underappreciated for how good it is.

After listening to the 1st ending and jumping to the host club one I was so disoriented. I honestly couldn't wait for the powerchords to finish and then the bridge hit and I could hear the vocals. That's when I started liking the song till the end. I feel if I listen to it repeatedly I'll start liking it more and more lol. Wow then we get hit with Lolite, that was so nice to listen to! I agree with the fact that I would love to listen to more of the instrumental licks but the fact it was just sprinkled here and there also makes me like it. My request is to please check out the Megalobox OST! I'm sure you'll enjoy it and it's so amazing. Perfect for a Boxing anime. I have no words for the NHK ending lol that was an experience.
Finally Aina the end loved it, the atmosphere they create gives me chills, but yea overall very relaxing and nice to listen.

Like said in other comments, NHK ni youkosou is about a depressif neet and his hourney to a healthier lifestyle, but also about other mental conditions like schizophrenia, imposter syndrom, saviour/ god syndrome and others.. All these are pottayer throughout the show through the characters and we witness how they interact et evolve together.
This anime is also a journey to a simpler mindset, where the characters look back to their roots and what caused them to become like this, to return to more 'innocent' simple state. Thats why the ending is about babies, and weird af with how it sounds

And I'd also recommend all of Overlord endings

Bro, it's very childish, you said it right, the singing is done from the point of view of the main character, a child, that's why the voice is like that, but in her body is a 30-year-old man, that's why the music is so aggressive 😂

49:20 I'd love to explain the conttext, but it is a hard, and it's also kind of useless
The main character is a shut in. But a true, 100% shut in. He watches TV, drinks and smokes, and wastes away all day in his tiny apartment.
His parents are paying for this (until the beginning of the show), so he doesn't work, either. He just sneaks out at night (to not have to meet people) to the convenience store for supplies.
And this causes some unhealthy thoughts. One part of that is him making up a conspiracy theory about the NHK-a Japanese public broadcast channel. In his mind, the channel's secret goal is to turn people into the kind of man-child that he is, incapable of doing anything by themselves. It's obviously just him passing the blame unto the thing he interacts with the most.
So, the theme of the song is basically: crazy person blames the TV for turning him mentally unstable

Btw, it's an incredible show, too. Certainly a typical anime, but definitely nothing high-brow either.
Just a mix of absurd comedy with some of the realest portrayals of broken humans

Love The Apothecary Diaries, one of those ones that might be an interesting watch for you despite not being music themed. Since you liked the ED, I also recommend Aina The End's ED for The Witch from Mercury season 2, "Red:birthmark". Not as pleasing on the ears, much more electronic and dramatic, but has a lot of cool stuff going on.

The "Welcome To The NHK" ending is context appropriate.
    No spoilers here but
It is a quite dark comedy. But also Slice of Life, it is about pretty normal stuff, but the fucked up kind of normal. Like smoking 2 packs a day, getting hooked on halucanagenics or porn or living in a place that looks like it's condemned and doing shit that will probably get you arrested kinda normal.
One of my favorite shows, with a very (in my opinion) beautiful soundtrack, but it doesn't appeal to everyone for obvious reasons.

It would be amazing if you could do a reaction to the Japanese band RADWIMPS! They are most famous for their musical work in anime films such as Your Name and Weathering With You, but they also have an extensive discography outside of that which is a lot of various types of rock. I would HIGHLY recommend listening to Hyperventilation, Tayuta, and Dada. The guitarist and bassist are insanely talented, I think you'll love it!
