Hey I got a good idea for the head canon for James Before James the red engine arrived on the island of Sodor he was a 0-6-0. But after some weight issues cause James to derail in a field he was given a front Pony truck and extended running board to help remedy these issues.
In regards to the whole debate regarding James' basis in relation to the illustrations, my head cannon explanation is that James could've arrived on the railway as a standard 0-6-0 goods engine (Whichever 0-6-0 though is up to your own interpretation). However, after his big crash The Fat Director took the opportunity to have James rebuilt with a new pony truck thus making him the signature 2-6-0 that we all know him as. The reason being that the lack of a pony axle at high speeds could cause him to oscillate violently and as proven could lead to disaster when navigating corners at such speeds. The rebuild would also reclassify him as a mixed traffic locomotive thus broadening his job skillset and allowing him to substitute for other engines on passenger trains. Perhaps this 0-6-0 James could be representative of his pre-crash condition.
Fat Controller: James, until I can trust you again, I will be taking away your pony truck and put you on goods. James: Bother! All jokes aside, this is a great alternate version of James. Your brother is in my prayers.
Never thought I'd see the day James becomes a Dean Goods. But I guess it only makes sense, as it looks quite similar to the Class 28, only it stands out a good deal more. I think your brother is proud of the way you've detailed this model, he looks fantastic.

To be honest I really like this idea. If it had an extended front running board with the two small wheels and a more accurate tender it would actually work quite well. Also I love how massive the dome is. XD
After looking at this james awhile I'd say the funniest thing about him isn't his big ol' face, but instead the magnum dome he's sporting. Especially on his red livery. I must say though, james being a dean goods is for sure a hot take that interests me...

After the war it was sold to them and Sir toppam ran him in the black paint until a brake failure led to a major derailment, and to make james feel better toppam allowed him to choose a new paint color and thus was painted red. Shortly after returning to service some mild running issues developed on Jame and after another stay at the works a pony truck was added to improve stability finally giving us the james we know today
That's a lovely model. I always liked the Dean Goods (the Great Western in general really), and as much as I hate to admit it - the red looks great! I have a 2301 model myself (No.2405) but mine is in lined green with a round-top firebox, so she's safe from being converted into a James by me. One little thing - the original molded numberplates on your model can still be seen - perhaps a little 'NWR' transfer to make the moulded plate look intentional?
What if James was Blue and not Red? That would be kinda cool and maybe for the back story it can be when the Sir Topham Hat III toke his Red paint away then paint him blue This is just a idea you dont have to do it
Are you planning to remake the story with the 2308’s new face? Because it’s just big step you took to replace his face it’s also making wonder about your filming technique! I’d like to learn how you film your models someday! But other than that, your model making or model designing is just astounding and never stop to amaze me keep up the good work! I genuinely really really like the new James model that you made. I especially love the face but it looks so weird without the front ponie truck. I'm going to probably do something similar but I'm going to add a front ponie truck to it. Just want to be clear I don't know if I spelled the name for the little wheels that are in the front of a train. I know the back part of an engine that has wheels there is called trailing trucks but I have no clue what the front ones are called. 😅
3:00 Black wartime livery is pretty accurate for James because James did arrive black, now he is repainted red so. This is pretty accurate canon wise to me if u catch my drift. 😉
I'd like to think that this alternate universe James is an incredibly hard worker. He loves pulling trucks and goods trains, but absolutely despises coaches and passenger trains. However, he does sometimes think a bit too highly of himself. He'll often think that the other engines are lazy and not working as hard as him. He'll often say "the reason I'm dirty is that I actually work hard, unlike the others who throw a fit about needing to shunt or complain about their precious paint getting wet in the rain”.
That actually looks pretty cool Do you think you might do a green version? Hornby does have a Great Western Dean Goods locomotive. It looks beautiful to me

Initially I found the large face a bit jarring, but with the proportions of the Dean goods it looks fabulous!
I'd love to see the pony truck version. As beautiful as this is, seeing James without the extended running plate is very uncanny valley.

The dean goods in black looked spectacular. Maybe buy the 3rd and make it into “rws” /the adventure begins James and have a trio
